Modi heads to China — a delicate step in the dragon-elephant tango

Synopsis
Amidst fragile relations and border tensions, Prime Minister Modi's upcoming visit to China signals a calculated step in geopolitics. Facilitated by a pact at the BRICS summit, the visit, tied to the SCO summit, aims to foster regional stability and address trade imbalances. India navigates complex relationships, balancing engagement with China and continued collaboration with the US.
Just a year ago, the idea of Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting China would have seemed far-fetched. Relations between the two nations were fragile. The border in eastern Ladakh was quiet but tense, with troop disengagement at key friction points still incomplete. Fast forward to 2025, and Modi's upcoming trip to Tianjin feels less like a gamble and more like a calculated step in a complex geopolitical dance.
The foundation for this cautious reset was laid last October, when Modi and President Xi Jinping agreed at the BRICS summit that 'disputes and differences would not be allowed to disturb border peace.' That pact has held firm, setting the stage for Modi's visit, official confirmation aside. Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to visit India next week to meet NSA Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.Modi's visit is officially tied to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, a 10-member Eurasian security grouping led by China and Russia, often seen as a counterweight to NATO. Modi's last trip to China, in 2018, was also SCO-related. India's position in the SCO is unique, it refrains from endorsing projects like the Belt and Road Initiative and keeps its distance from China-centric economic roadmaps. Yet the SCO serves India's interests, from counterterrorism in Afghanistan to promoting connectivity that respects sovereignty and strengthening ties with Central Asia. Modi has used the SCO Heads of State Council meetings to spotlight cross-border terrorism, without directly naming Pakistan.
The forum has also become a neutral space for India and China to engage after tensions spiked in 2020's Galwan clash. The so-called 'Moscow Consensus,' reached months after Galwan during an SCO foreign ministers' meeting, is a clear example. President Xi's participation in the 2023 SCO summit Modi hosted virtually further cemented the platform's role.Modi hasn't attended every SCO summit. He skipped the Kazakhstan meeting last year. This trip signals recognition of the Tianjin summit's importance to China and the global stage. It's not just about bilateral ties, it's about maintaining a steady hand in regional geopolitics and securing support for India's upcoming BRICS presidency.US policy has occasionally complicated India's external engagements, but the India-China thaw started long before trade tensions hit. Agreements to end the military standoff in eastern Ladakh were reached before the US elections. Modi's China visit conveys a clear message: India is ready for a functional relationship with Beijing, as long as border stability is preserved.'When NSA Doval visited China last December, both sides agreed to maintain peace on the ground so that 'issues on the border do not hold back the normal development of bilateral relations,'' the reports note. India has maintained this balance despite China's military ties with Pakistan or tensions in the South China Sea.The Modi-Xi meeting could include announcements like resuming direct flights and rebuilding trust in trade, investment, and technology. India hopes China will ease trade restrictions and increase imports to reduce the $100 billion trade deficit. China, for its part, seeks a transparent, non-discriminatory environment for its companies.'The dragon-elephant tango may have just started, but in these circumstances, it will remain accident-prone,' analysts say, recalling highs and lows, from the early Modi years to Doklam, informal summits, and Galwan. Modi's recent remark, endorsed by Beijing, that 'competition should not be allowed to turn into conflict,' signals the cautious approach both sides are aiming for. This visit doesn't mean India is abandoning the US. Modi has met Xi at previous SCO summits without affecting India's strategic autonomy. Today, attention is heightened because of US-India trade tensions, including tariffs on Indian oil imports from Russia. Yet India continues to pursue defence, technology, and energy collaboration with the US.The China visit asserts India's position against unilateralism while keeping the door open with America. A potential resolution in Ukraine could also ease some tariff pressures.India will closely monitor three issues: The US's continued commitment to the Indo-Pacific amid potential trade concessions with China, particularly as India hosts the upcoming Quad summit in November. Counterterrorism cooperation, which may be affected by the US recalibrating its Pakistan policy. The proposed H-1B visa overhaul, which could impact Indian professionals in IT and healthcare, potentially straining people-to-people and economic ties. These challenges will test India's diplomatic finesse and its ability to balance competing global priorities.

PM Modi talks about Mission Sudarshan Chakra from Red Fort, is this ballistic missile defence system of India like Israel's Iron Dome?

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on Friday, 15 August 2025, unveiled 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra'. It is aimed at protecting India's critical establishments over the next decade through indigenous technological development within the coming 10 years. Under Project Kusha, Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is advancing efforts to develop a S400-type indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. India aims to complete the prototype in 12 to 18 months, followed by user trials that could last 12 to 36 months. What did PM Modi say on the Sudarshan Chakra Mission? He said, 'In the next ten years, by 2035, I want to expand, strengthen, and modernise this national security shield. Drawing inspiration from Lord Shri Krishna, we have chosen the path of the Sudarshan Chakra. The nation will be launching the Sudarshan Chakra Mission.' The comprehensive security initiative is set to implement multiple layers of protection, combining modern surveillance, cybersecurity measures and physical safeguards, specifically designed for India's current security challenges. 'Every citizen must feel protected,' PM Modi said, adding, 'This mission will be research-based and developed entirely with indigenous technology.' What is the purpose of the Sudarshan Chakra Mission? The initiative is expected to encompass a multi-layered security framework, integrating advanced surveillance, cyber protection, and physical infrastructure safeguards tailored to India's evolving threat landscape. Drawing inspiration from the Mahabharata, PM Modi invoked the moment when Lord Krishna shielded the sun to enable Arjun to defeat Jayadrath. 'We are taking inspiration from Lord Krishna, who once barred sunlight from reaching Earth. That divine intervention changed the course of battle. Today, we must similarly shield our vital institutions from emerging threats,' he said, blending mythology with modern strategic vision. Features of the Sudarshan Chakra Mission Though specific details of Mission Sudarshan Chakra remain under wraps, sources suggest it will involve collaboration between India's premier research agencies, defence establishments, and private innovators. The mission aligns with the government's broader push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), especially in defence and critical infrastructure. The announcement comes amid heightened global concerns over cyber warfare, hybrid threats, and sabotage of strategic assets. (With agency inputs)

‘Roadmap for prosperous India': HM Amit Shah hails PM Modi's I-Day address

New Delhi: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Friday termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address to the nation on the 79th Independence Day as a roadmap showcasing the progress of the past 11 years, the strength of the present, and the strategy for a prosperous India. Home Minister Shah, in a series of posts on X, said that whether it's the elimination of terrorists through 'Operation Sindoor,' the plan to secure the country's infrastructure through 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra,' or the resolve to create an infiltrator-free India through the 'High-Powered Demography Mission,' the PM Modi-led government is committed to making the nation strong and secure. HM Shah highlighted the government's unwavering commitment to the interests of farmers and hailed PM Modi's call for self-reliance in nuclear energy, critical minerals, energy, the space sector, and jet engines. He said the announcement of the 'Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana' and significant GST relief measures during the upcoming Diwali will make the lives of citizens easier and boost small enterprises. HM Shah said that on Independence Day, PM Modi gifted the youth of the nation by announcing the implementation of the 'Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana' with a fund of Rs 1 lakh crore. Under this scheme, first-time employees in the private sector will receive Rs 15,000, and companies generating more jobs will also receive incentives. This initiative will benefit approximately 3.5 crore youth, providing a golden opportunity for Indian youth and strengthening the journey toward a self-reliant India. The Home Minister stated that the Modi government is taking robust steps toward a self-reliant India by empowering small businesses. From the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Modi announced Next Gen GST Reforms as a Diwali gift to the nation. These reforms will not only greatly benefit small industries but also make everyday essentials more affordable, giving a new impetus to the Indian economy. This effort will further strengthen India's economic prowess and significantly contribute to making it the world's third-largest economy, he said. He added that that PM Modi made a historic announcement on Independence Day by launching 'Mission Sudarshan Chakra.' Under this mission, by 2035, critical national sites will be equipped with cutting-edge technology and powerful weapon systems. The mission aims not only to neutralise enemy attacks but also to deliver counter-strikes, much like the Sudarshan Chakra. This step will prove to be a milestone in making national security impregnable and enabling targeted strikes against adversaries. The Union Minister said that in his historic Independence Day address, PM Modi acknowledged the 100-year rich history and contributions of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to nation-building, paying tribute to all the volunteers who have made unparalleled contributions to the country's 100-year journey of progress. For the past century, the RSS has fulfilled its resolve of nation-building through individual development with service, dedication, organisation, and discipline, he said.

Chinese LNG Buyers Snap Up Imports as Prices Fall to Refill Storage

(Bloomberg) -- China's liquefied natural gas buyers are boosting imports as falling prices and the need to replenish inventories end months of sluggish deliveries. The 30-day moving average for LNG imports to China have been above the five-year average so far for August, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg. Earlier this month, Beijing Gas Group Co. purchased at least two shipments for September, while Zhejiang Energy bought a cargo, according to traders with knowledge of the matter. This marks a reversal for China, which had cut imports for months after a mild winter left storage facilities full. At the same time, elevated international spot prices prompted importers to scale back overseas purchases and even resell cargoes into more lucrative markets abroad. Instead, gas firms relied more on cheaper domestic supply and pipeline imports. However, Asian LNG prices have been on the decline and are trading in the low-to-mid $11 per million British thermal units range, roughly the lowest since April. That is a level which makes imports profitable for sales into some of China's domestic markets, traders said. Chinese firms have also become more active in optimizing supply. Several cargoes for September delivery were bought and sold by Chinese firms in the low-$11 per million Btu range on Friday, according to traders. Still, the buying may taper off as Chinese firms refill inventories drained over the last few months. Demand for gas hasn't significantly picked up, and the recent purchases are more to take advantage of better prices and refill stockpiles, traders said. Industrial users of the fuel in northern China may have to halt or reduce operations in late August to cut pollution during a military parade in Beijing, ENN said on its data platform earlier this month.
