BJP releases chargesheet on failures of Cong govt

Time of India22-05-2025

Mangaluru: The BJP on Wednesday released a chargesheet highlighting what it called the failures of the Congress-led Karnataka govt.
Addressing reporters after its release,
Udupi-Chikmagaluru MP Kota Shrinivasa Poojary
alleged that the state govt failed on all fronts and was running purely on propaganda and false promises.
He accused the administration of being entangled in multiple scams, including the Muda scam, Valmiki Corporation scam, and alleged misuse of funds meant for Dalit welfare.
Poojary also cited issues such as injustice to farmers, rising milk prices, and the deaths of lactating women. He alleged that land belonging to farmers was being encroached upon in the name of waqf properties.
Slamming the Congress for making baseless allegations against the Centre, Poojary lashed out at labour minister Santhosh Lad, stating that the minister is more focused on Prime Minister Modi's attire than labour welfare.
He further claimed that rural infrastructure was neglected, with PWD, fisheries, and panchayat roads not receiving maintenance funds for the past two years. Pothole-ridden roads are now a common sight across the state.
He also criticised the poor implementation of the Centre's Jal Jeevan Mission in Karnataka.
Poojary alleged that key farmer welfare schemes, such as the additional Rs 4,000 under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, were discontinued after the Congress came to power.

He also accused the govt of diverting SC/ST welfare funds to finance its guarantee schemes. The Congress govt is directly responsible for the injustice to the SC/ST communities, he said.
Poojary lashes out at Kharge
The MP took objection to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge's reference to the "Chut-Put War" remark and "Namma Pakistan" during the Sadhana Samavesha. He questioned the chief minister's silence on controversial remarks made by MLA Kothur Manjunath about military actions.
"Congress is quick to allege security lapses in the Pahalgam incident. Will they make the same claims about the assassinations of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, or the Mumbai terror attacks?" he asked.
Poojary alleged that the govt was trying to silence the opposition by filing FIRs against those who question the govt, with reference to the cases filed against Dr Arun Ullal, Puneet Kerehalli, Chakravarthi Sulibele, MLA Harish Poonja and others. When asked about the rowdy-sheet case booked against Suhas Shetty during Kota's tenure as Dakshina Kannada district minister, he clarified that such files never reach the minister's desk.
To a query on Madhya Pradesh minister's comments against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, he said, "The BJP has always stood by the armed forces and nationalism. We will not speak against the military. The party will take appropriate action."

Middle class in focus, says govt; highlights gains from pensions, tax relief, smart city push

New Delhi: The Centre's policies aim to better equip middle-income families to face the future with confidence, an official statement said, highlighting the policy attention this segment will receive over the next four years. The statement, marking the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government's completion of the first year of its third term in office, also noted that 2.3 million central government employees will benefit from the new unified pension scheme (UPS) launched in April this year, which is a hybrid of contributory and assured models. The statement titled, 'the middle class story', discussed various measures implemented so far by the NDA government in taxation, pension, inflation reduction and connectivity. It said this segment of the population plays a vital role in India's growth story. UPS, which assures an employee a pension of 50% of the average basic pay drawn in the last one year before retirement, is open to those with at least 25 years of experience. For those with shorter service tenure, pension will be computed proportionately, with a minimum qualifying period of 10 years. They will get a minimum assured pension of ₹ 10,000 a month on retirement. If an employee passes away, then his family will receive 60% of the assured pension, the statement clarified. It is expected to benefit around 2.3 million central government employees, the statement said, adding that several state governments have also adopted this model, extending its coverage to over nine million individuals currently under the National Pension System. The statement also said the income tax relief announced in the Union budget for FY26 will benefit crores of salaried citizens. The budget had announced that individuals earning up to ₹ 12 lakh annually will now pay no income tax, except on special incomes like capital gains. With the standard deduction of ₹ 75,000, even those earning ₹ 12.75 lakh will pay no tax, the statement said. 'It shows a deep understanding of middle-class needs and comes despite the government giving up nearly ₹ 1 lakh crore in revenue,' the statement said. On the smart cities mission, the government said the plan, rolled out in 2015, saw 93% of the 7,545 approved projects completed by 2025, with a total investment of over ₹ 1.51 trillion.

Hours after fiery exchange with Elon Musk, Donald Trump softens tone: 'Oh, it's okay'

Hours after a fiery public exchange between US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, signs of a truce between the two of the world's most powerful men are emerging. According to POLITICO, White House aides have scheduled a call on Friday with the billionaire Tesla CEO to broker a peace. They are also attempting to convince the president to soften his public criticism of Musk to prevent any further escalation. When asked about the public exchange with one of his strongest backers, Trump told POLITICO, "Oh, it's okay.' The exchange between Trump and Musk began after the US President, in a televised Oval Office, said that he was "very disappointed" after his former aide and top donor criticised his "big, beautiful" spending bill before Congress. Trump also suggested the world's richest man misses being in the White House and has 'Trump derangement syndrome", according to the Associated Press. Musk also, without proof, claimed that Trump was mentioned in government documents on disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. On the other hand, Trump suggested Musk's multibillion-dollar government contracts, including for launching rockets and for the use of the Starlink satellite service, should be terminated to save money for the federal government. "The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts," Trump said on Truth Social. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told AFP that Musk's Epstein tweet "is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the 'One Big Beautiful Bill' because it does not include the policies he wanted."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the world's tallest railway bridge in Chenab of Kashmir. The Chenab Bridge will provide all-weather rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, significantly reducing travel time between Katra and Srinagar. This 272-kilometer-long project, costing around Rs 43,780 crore, includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 kilometers) and 943 bridges. It is situated at a height of 359 meters above the river, the Chenab Rail Bridge is an architectural marvel. Spanning across 1,315 meters, this steel arch bridge stands 35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The bridge can endure winds of up to 260 km/h and remains stable in Seismic Zone-V. Built using 30,000 tons of steel, it rests on foundations as wide as half a football field.
