Hyundai Creta tops June sales, trails Wagon R in H1 2025 rankings

Hyundai's popular mid-size SUV, the Creta, has emerged as the top-selling passenger vehicle in India for June 2025, edging ahead of Maruti Suzuki's Dzire by a narrow margin.
According to industry data, the Hyundai Creta recorded sales of 15,786 units in June, ahead of the Dzire at 15,484 units, followed by the Brezza with 14,507 units and the Ertiga at 14,151 units.
For the January–June 2025 period, the Creta was the second highest-selling model with 1,00,560 units, just behind Maruti Suzuki's Wagon R, which led with 1,01,424 units. The Dzire followed with 96,101 units, Brezza with 93,729 units, and Swift with 93,098 units.
According to Hyundai, the Creta has been the best-selling model in the country for three out of the first six months of the year—March, April and June. June 2025 also marked the tenth anniversary of the Creta nameplate.
'Becoming the best-selling model in June 2025, exactly as it completes 10 years in the country, is a testament to the love and trust that Indian customers have placed in the brand,' said Tarun Garg, whole-time director and chief operating officer, Hyundai Motor India, in a statement.
The monthly performance of the Creta showed a steady trend, with the model topping the charts in March with 18,059 units, in April with 17,016 units and again in June. The Dzire briefly took the lead in May with 18,084 units, but Hyundai regained the top spot the following month.
With SUVs continuing to dominate customer preferences in India, Hyundai's performance in H1 2025 signals robust demand in the segment. Maruti Suzuki remains a strong competitor with multiple models—the Dzire, Brezza, Ertiga, Swift and Wagon R—continuing to perform well.

Car wholesales subdued ahead of festive season on weak consumer sentiments

AI image NEW DELHI: The sluggishness in the car industry was evident as wholesale deliveries in July — ahead of the festive season of Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi — were muted with top makers such as Tata Motors , Hyundai, Toyota and Honda reporting a decline in dispatches (year-on-year) with Maruti reporting flat numbers. Mahindra & Mahindra and Kia saw growth in numbers, but the overall mood of the industry remains subdued with industry officials speaking of challenges in generating demand as geopolitical tensions, fears from US tariffs and job cuts in the IT sector keep consumer sentiments low. Maruti, the country's biggest carmaker, said while demand remains tough currently, the company expects revival during the festive period. 'The overall industry is not growing… (and) it's not a good sign,' Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer (Marketing & Sales), said, adding that affordability — especially of entry-level cars — remains a challenge. During the festival, he said the company expects to see 'green shoots' building up. Hyundai, which saw a 10% decline in domestic sales, said that there has been 'some softness' in demand in recent months. '… we remain optimistic with the onset of the festive season and are fully geared up with robust supply and product offerings,' Tarun Garg, Director and COO said. Car companies are planning new launches to kick up demand and attract customers. Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo launched the next-gen version of its top-seller XC60 SUV priced at Rs 72 lakh (ex-showroom). Company MD Jyoti Malhotra said Volvo will consider bringing in plug-in hybrids to India if the tax structure gets conducive, and added that a FTA with EU — on the lines of India-UK trade deal — will help attract investments and new car models. Companies are working on new model launches and discounts and incentives to push the numbers. However, this is putting a strain on their profitability. Many companies have also been going slow on production expansion plans in view of the uncertainty in the economy, something which has only gained in intensity following US President Donald Trump's decision to slap a 25% tariff on India. ICRA projects modest growth across Indian auto segments in FY26 amid mixed demand trends

India's automotive sector is expected to witness moderate growth across key segments in FY26, aided by improving macroeconomic conditions, festive demand and infrastructure push, even as concerns persist over supply chain challenges and consumer sentiment, ratings agency ICRA said in its latest outlook. ICRA expects wholesale volumes in the passenger vehicle (PV) segment to grow by a modest 1–4 per cent this fiscal. The segment continues to grapple with elevated inventory levels, production constraints due to shortages of critical components like rare earth magnets used in EVs, and subdued consumer sentiment. Wholesale PV volumes declined by 1.4 per cent year-on-year in Q1 FY2026, and in June 2025, fell by 9 per cent sequentially and 7 per cent on a year-on-year basis, despite discounts offered by OEMs. Inventory levels increased to 55 days by the end of June, according to FADA. Sport utility vehicles (SUVs) remain the most preferred category, contributing 65–66 per cent of total PV volumes. While steady model launches are expected to support demand, headwinds persist for exports due to forex shortages in key African markets and ongoing inflationary pressures. Nevertheless, export volumes showed sequential growth of 14 per cent in June 2025, with Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai maintaining their lead. Two-wheeler projection The two-wheeler segment is projected to grow by 6–9 per cent in FY2026, driven by healthy rural incomes, expectations of a normal monsoon, and recovery in urban demand. While domestic wholesale volumes declined 4.3 per cent year-on-year in June 2025 to 1.5 million units, retail volumes rose by 5.1 per cent, supported by strong rural and semi-urban demand. Electric two-wheelers saw a 5 per cent sequential growth in June, with monthly volumes at 1.05 lakh units and penetration remaining in the 6–7 per cent range. Exports also rose by 34 per cent year-on-year, although currency constraints and inflation remain potential barriers in some markets like Nigeria. Commercial vehicle projection In the commercial vehicle (CV) segment, ICRA anticipates a 3–5 per cent increase in wholesale volumes during FY2026, supported by improving pace of construction and infrastructure activity and a stable economic environment. After a marginal 1.2 per cent decline in FY2025, CV wholesales fell 3.8 per cent year-on-year in June 2025 but rose 1.7 per cent sequentially. Retail sales increased by 6.6 per cent year-on-year in June, indicating inventory correction at dealerships. The bus segment is expected to see relatively stronger growth of 8–10 per cent, aided by replacement demand, while trucks are likely to post modest gains. While demand trends remain mixed and EV production continues to face raw material bottlenecks, ICRA said the upcoming festive season and new product offerings could help support overall automotive industry volumes in the near term.>
