How Mercedes-AMG Will Bring Classic V8 Feel To EVs

Miami Heralda day ago
Despite electric vehicles breaking all kinds of speed records, they've generally failed to match the driving engagement of their gas-powered counterparts. Mercedes-AMG realizes this, and will be taking quite extreme measures to engineer a more engaging emotional character into future performance EVs. That's what Mercedes Group tech chief Markus Schäfer told Autocar at the launch of the stunning new AMG Concept GT XX, and the production version of this car could be the first recipient of these new technologies, but what are they?
We've seen simulated gearchanges before: Hyundai's N e-Shift system in the Ioniq 5 N successfully mirrors the shifting feel of a conventional dual-clutch transmission. And, while the tech initially sounded gimmicky, most of us who have driven the Ioniq 5 N deem the e-Shift system to be genuinely fun. Mercedes-AMG will look to implement a similar system.
"How does the car feel in terms of noise, in terms of sound level, in terms of the vibration, in terms of the gearshift? It has to touch the emotional side of you," said Schäfer. "And if it doesn't, it doesn't do the job. This is what AMG cars do, and that's exactly what we transferred piece by piece into this AMG GT XX."

Besides these simulated shifts, speakers in the headlights of the GT XX will mimic the sound of an AMG V8, and Mercedes-AMG published a video of the car that confirms the use of simulated shifts.
Quite how the AMG team will simulate the vibrations of an ICE car remains to be seen.
"The AMG is also an emotional experience from an acoustic standpoint, from noise and vibration harshness, and that's exactly what you should expect in this car as well," said Schäfer of the GT XX. "You can expect everything that you have today in the V8, V12 race-oriented AMGs [in this car]."
In the current C63, GLC 63, and SL 43, Mercedes-AMG turned to four-cylinder hybrid power instead of the six- or eight-cylinder mills one would expect to find in these cars. All are quick and technically advanced, but they lack the exciting engine note and immersive building of power in the engines that came before. Such has been the icy reception to this four-pot, that AMG is already working on a plan to replace it.
The performance division must now apply these learnings to its next generation of EVs. It's obvious that most enthusiasts are not blown away by high-tech features unless they enrich the driving experience. Hyundai has shown us this can be done in the Ioniq 5 N, but that's also a younger performance sub-brand that doesn't have the weight of expectation and history behind it that AMG does.
Still, we're glad to hear that Mercedes-AMG is focusing on the driving experience, not just straight-line speed and outrageous outputs. It was this same switch in strategy that turned AMG into a true BMW M rival in the 2000s and 2010s.

2026 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 S Final Edition Bids Farewell to the 416-HP Sedan

The 2026 marks the end of the line for the second-generation CLA and its sporty AMG-tuned variant. The Final Edition pairs Mountain Grey Magno paint with yellow accents and loud "45 S" graphics on the front doors. The Final Edition will be offered in limited numbers starting in early 2026; pricing hasn't yet been announced. Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to launch the new third-generation 2026 CLA-class, starting this fall with the fully electric CLA EV before adding a new hybrid CLA-class sedan in early 2026. But Mercedes's performance division, AMG, has yet to work its magic on the new CLA, and before it does, it has revealed a send-off for the current CLA45 S in the form of a new Final Edition. The 2026 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 S Final Edition will be available in limited numbers—although the automaker didn't specify just how many—when it reaches dealerships early next year. The Final Edition wears Mountain Grey Magno paint from the brand's Manufaktur personalization program and is further distinguished by a black-and-yellow "45 S" graphic on the front doors. Yellow accents are also found on the sideview mirrors. The 19-inch wheels are painted matte black with yellow accents surrounding the center caps. The black brake calipers have AMG logos. The Final Edition also has the AMG Night package, bringing gloss-black and black-chrome exterior trim. The AMG Aerodynamics Package Plus is also fitted, bringing a beefier front splitter, small dive planes on the front bumper, a sizable rear wing, and a gloss-black rear diffuser. There is also a special silver chrome fuel cap adorned with AMG lettering. The yellow touches continue inside, where the Final Edition features black AMG Performance seats upholstered in microsuede and Mercedes's MB-Tex synthetic leather. There is yellow stitching throughout the cabin, and the front headrests sport an embroidered "45 S" logo. There is also a "45 S Final Edition" on the center console, an illuminated AMG badge on the door sills, "45 S" branding on the floor mats, and more yellow accents on the nappa leather and microfiber steering wheel. The powertrain remains unchanged, with the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder pumping out 416 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes claims the CLA45 S can rip from zero to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds en route to a 155-mph top speed. But we bet it's even quicker. When we tested a 2020 CLA45, back when it had only 382 hp, it did the dash in just 3.7 seconds. Shifting duties are handled by an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the CLA45's standard all-wheel-drive system can send all of the power to the rear wheels for tail-happy antics. While the 2026 CLA45 S Final Edition marks the end of the line for the second-generation sporty sedan, Mercedes is surely cooking up a hotter version of the new third-generation model. Spy photos have captured a new CLA wearing an active rear wing, redesigned bumpers, and camouflage on the front fenders where an AMG badge typically goes. We expect AMG to fiddle with both the hybrid and electric CLA-class sedans, and we shouldn't have to wait too much longer for a full reveal. One Unexpected Automaker Dominated 2025 IIHS Safety Rankings

One Unexpected Automaker Dominated 2025 IIHS Safety Rankings originally appeared on Autoblog. Safety is important to most new car buyers, and one metric customers look at is the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) crash safety ratings. As an independent non-profit organization that tasks itself with evaluating vehicle safety, the group's ratings are generally considered more or less synonymous with how safe a vehicle might be in an accident. For 2025, the automaker that takes home the most victories may surprise you. But then, if you've been paying attention, maybe it won't. View the 3 images of this gallery on the original article It wasn't Volvo, it wasn't Subaru, and it wasn't any number of other brands you might have guessed. Hyundai Motor Group earned 15 IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ (TSP and TSP+) awards. But you shouldn't be so surprised, as it's the group's second consecutive year winning this award. The Genesis G90 took home a TSP award, and the list of TSP+ winners is considerably longer, including electric models like the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6, mainstays of the brand like the Hyundai Tucson and Santa Fe SUVs, and sedans like the Elantra and Sonata. Earning a TSP or TSP+ rating isn't easy and hasn't gotten easier for 2025. In fact, the organization added stricter requirements for second-row occupants just this year, updating the moderate overlap front test. How do the usual suspects compare? Currently, the IIHS lists three Subaru vehicles as award winners: the Forester, Solterra, and Ascent. Volvo's only winners are the XC90 and XC90 plug-in. While it isn't even close, there is a small asterisk next to Hyundai's accolade. Hyundai Motor Group comprises the Kia, Hyundai, and Genesis brands. Most automakers rely on a single nameplate, or at most two, which means there were simply fewer opportunities for awards. Another factor to consider is that some of these vehicles are, underneath, very similar or almost identical. For example, both the Elantra and K4 won TSP+ awards, but are mechanically almost twins. But hey, that doesn't make them any less safe. View the 2 images of this gallery on the original article Even with some fine print, the latest round of IIHS safety awards paints a vastly different picture of the Hyundai Motor Group than what you would see even ten years ago. In 2015, Hyundai and Kia each had four award-winning vehicles, and only the Tucson and Genesis took home TSP+ designations. The latter of which, remember, was a standalone model, rather than an entire brand as it is today. A growing portfolio has a lot to do with it. Hyundai had around a dozen models back then, but today, it has 19 to choose from. Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have taken giant steps forward over the last few years, and safety is just one area where the Koreans have exceeded expectations. Need proof? Look no further than offerings like the IONIQ 5 N, which seems to reinvent what it means to be an engaging-to-drive EV. Remarkable what a few years of progress can add up to, isn't it?
