Chandigarh Police busts gang involved in more than 11 vehicle thefts, arrests ‘kingpin', three others
The police have arrested three vehicle lifters and one receiver of stolen property, reportedly solving 11 vehicle theft cases related to the group known as Munna gang.
A police team conducted a series of raids and naka operations. On June 26, the police arrested accused Aslam, a Ludhiana resident, from Sector 26 during a naka operation near the National Institute of Technical Teacher Training Research. He was found riding a stolen motorcycle (Splendor).
According to the police, during the interrogation, Aslam revealed the whereabouts of his two gang members — Navneet Pratap Singh of Kanpur and Manoj Thakur, alias Munna, of Moradabad, who were later arrested from near the Sports Complex, Manimajra. A stolen bike (Royal Enfield Bullet) reported missing from Sector 22, was also recovered.
Thakur, the alleged kingpin of the gang, is a proclaimed offender and is involved in over 33 criminal cases across the northern states, police said. His accomplice, Aslam, has a record of over a dozen vehicle theft cases. The gang confessed to stealing vehicles in Chandigarh and later transporting them to Ludhiana for dismantling, resale, or disposal of parts like batteries.
On the basis of their disclosures, police recovered three Honda City vehicles, three Honda Activa, three Hero Splendor and three Royal Enfield motorcycles, and eight batteries.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Jaiparkash alias Betia from New Smart Colony, Ludhiana — a known receiver of stolen property. Documents of stolen vehicles and batteries were recovered from his possession.
All accused were presented before the court and have been remanded in two days of police custody to aid further investigation and recovery efforts.

UP Police constable held for motorcycle theft in Delhi to pay off his gambling debt
The Delhi Police last week arrested an Uttar Pradesh Police constable for allegedly stealing motorcycles in the national capital to pay off his gambling debts. The accused has been identified as Mohseen, 27, who was stationed at the 44 BN PAC on the Hapur Road in Meerut. The Delhi Police nabbed him from the Preet Vihar area of East Delhi on August 6 while conducting a patrol in Rajdhani Enclave. 'Based on a tip-off, the police detained a person named Mohseen and found two master keys, which are used to unlock vehicles, in his possession. He is from the Baraut area of Baghpat and could not tell any justified reason for his presence in the Preet Vihar area,' said Abhishek Dhania, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East. Upon further investigation, the police found that Mohseen had been employed as a constable in the UP Police since 2019. 'During sustained interrogation, he accepted his guilt and said he came to the Preet Vihar area for motorcycle theft and stole a Hero Splendour motorcycle from Preet Vihar on May 30,' DCP Dhania said. The police said Mohseen took a leave from August 5 to come to Delhi. CCTV footage of his May 30 theft showed that he used master keys in his possession to target the parked vehicle, said the police. The police tracked down one Vishal, 22, who purchased the Splendor bike that Mohseen stole in May. Vishal told the police that he bought the bike after seeing an advertisement on Mohseen's Facebook page. 'The accused targeted parked motorcycles in Delhi using master keys. After stealing the vehicle, he sold it in UP through personal contacts and social media platforms like Facebook. He used the money for gambling or paying off his debt. The engine and chassis numbers were tampered with to evade detection,' DCP Dhania said.

In a daring daylight snatching, two motorcycle-borne men made off with a 42-year-old woman's bag near the Railway Bridge on the slip road from Tribune Chowk to Hallo Majra Chowk on Friday evening. The snatched bag contained a mobile phone, her Aadhaar card, PAN card, driving licence, two bank ATM cards, the registration certificate of her scooter, and her son's Aadhaar card, the victim told the Chandigarh Police. (HT) The victim, Meena Kumari, a caretaker at 3BRD School and resident of Vikas Nagar, Mauli Jagran, told police she was returning home on her Honda Activa after purchasing medicines from GMCH, Sector 32, around 4.30 pm. On the way, two youths, riding a motorcycle without helmets, began moving alongside her. As she approached the Railway Bridge, the pillion rider snatched the black bag hanging from her scooter's crash guard, she alleged. The duo then sped towards Hallo Majra Chowk. 'I chased them and saw their faces clearly, but could not note the registration number of their motorcycle,' she stated in her complaint. The stolen bag contained a mobile phone, her Aadhaar card, PAN card, driving licence, two bank ATM cards, the registration certificate of her scooter, and her son's Aadhaar card, said Kumari. Police registered a case under Sections 304(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Industrial Area police station. UP cop held in Delhi for stealing bike to repay gambling debts
A serving Uttar Pradesh Police constable was arrested in east Delhi's Preet Vihar for allegedly stealing a motorcycle to clear gambling debts, police said on Sunday. Investigators later traced the stolen motorcycle to a man in Meerut, who told police he had bought it from the accused via social media. (File photo) Deputy commissioner of police (east) Abhishek Dhania identified the accused as Mohammed Mohseen, 27, posted with the 44th Battalion of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) in Meerut. He was apprehended during a patrol in Rajdhani Enclave Market earlier this week, when police recovered two master keys used to unlock motorcycles from his possession. During interrogation, Mohseen, a 2019-batch official and resident of Baghpat, allegedly confessed to stealing a Hero Splendor from Preet Vihar in May. CCTV footage from the date of the theft allegedly corroborated his presence, Dhania said. Investigators later traced the stolen motorcycle to a man in Meerut, who told police he had bought it from Mohseen via social media. The bike's engine and chassis numbers had been tampered with, police said. According to Dhania, Mohseen is married, addicted to gambling, and has previous cases of vehicle theft against him. 'He targeted parked two-wheelers in Delhi using master keys, then sold them in UP through personal contacts and social media. He wanted to pay off his gambling debts,' the DCP said. Police said that Mohseen was arrested under sections of thefts of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, adding that further investigation is under way.
