Mahatma's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi had scaled up the matter to Assam chief minister.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reacting to a post by Mahatma's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi had written on X: 'I am not aware of this decision taken by the district administration. Let me verify the facts.' The chief minister also maintained that Assam owes much to Mahatma Gandhi.
"He stood firmly with Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi when the Congress party led by Nehru wanted to include Assam in Pakistan under the Grouping Plan," Sarma had stated on the microblogging site.

The 60-year-old statue was removed as part Doom Doom's makeover project which included building a clock tower and replacing the old statue with another statue.
Large people turned out to witness the installations and inauguration of the clock tower on Wednesday.
Officials in Municipal Board, 'The statue necessitated replacement as one side of the spectacles of the statue was damaged and there were a couple of damages that have crept in the statue over the years. The face of the statue was facing the old AT Raad which is no longer the entry point of Doom Dooma town.'
Assam minister for Labour and Doomdooma MLA Rupesh Gowala said, 'We had assured a new and taller statue of the Father of the Nation would be erected at the same site and today we have done so. This was our commitment to the people, and we have fulfilled the same.'
Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah laid the foundation stone of the project before the 2024 Lok Sabha election.
When the contractor had begun the work a couple, former MLA of Doomdooma and Congress leader Durga Bhumij along with some Congressmen arrived at the site and opposed the removal of the statue of Gandhi and building a clock tower there.
Bhumij had alleged that the BJP never paid due respect to Gandhi. Instead, it always gave respect to Nathuram Godse. At a time when Gandhi's statue was set up in as many as 80 countries around the world, the Board is going to build a clock tower by removing the statue of the Father of the Nation.'

Radhakrishnan named NDA's V-P candidate
New Delhi: Maharashtra Governor Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, a seasoned BJP leader from Tamil Nadu with an RSS background, was on Sunday named the vice-presidential candidate of the ruling National Democratic Alliance. BJP president J P Nadda made the announcement following a meeting of the party's parliamentary board, which included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and consulting the party's allies. Nadda appealed for unanimous election of Radhakrishnan (67), an OBC leader and two-time former member of Lok Sabha, to the constitutional position, saying the BJP leaders had spoken to the Opposition parties last week and will continue to do so. The Opposition leaders had told the BJP interlocutors that they can make up their mind only after being told of the ruling alliance's nominee, Nadda said, adding that his party will reach out to them again. Due to the comfortable majority of the BJP and its allies in the electoral college, comprising Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, Radhakrishnan's election is all but certain, and the party hopes that his elevation will help it make fresh inroads in Tamil Nadu, where elections are due next year. Radhakrishnan belongs to the influential Gounder caste, an OBC community, in Tamil Nadu. Nadda emphasised on his nearly 40 years in public life, noting that he is well regarded in different parties and commands respect among various sections of society. "He is considered a statesman," Nadda said of the former Coimbatore MP who was made the Jharkhand governor in 2023 and then shifted to Maharashtra in July 2024. Unlike his predecessor Jagdeep Dhankhar, who was also a governor like him before being named as the NDA's vice-presidential nominee in 2022, Radhakrishnan has refrained from cultivating a public profile on political issues and skirted any controversy. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, sources said, will oversee the vice-presidential election, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will be the polling agent. The last date for filing nomination is August 21. Chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of the BJP-led alliance will to be part of Radhakrishnan's nomination-filing exercise, besides the prime minister and Union ministers. If the Opposition alsonames its candidate, the election will be held on September 9.

Rahul Gandhi kicks off ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra'
Patna/New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched the party's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' in Bihar, a 16-day march covering more than 1,300 km across over 20 districts. The campaign, aimed at protesting Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list and what the Congress calls 'vote chori,' began from Sasaram and will culminate with a rally in Patna on 1 September. The yatra began from Bihar's Sasaram, with several leaders such as Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Pawan Khera, Kanhaiya Kumar and senior RJD leaders, including Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, joining Gandhi for the launch. Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X, wrote: '16 days, 20+ districts, 1,300+ km. We are coming among the people with the Voter Adhikar Yatra. This is a fight to protect the most basic democratic right – 'one person, one vote'. Join us in Bihar to save the Constitution.' The route will take Gandhi through Aurangabad, Gaya, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Munger, Bhagalpur, Purnea, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Champaran, Siwan, Chapra and Arrah, before concluding in Patna. During the event, the Congress MP vowed to expose 'vote chori' and added that the Special Intensive Revision in Bihar was a 'conspiracy' by the Election Commission. ‘Felt like it skid on runway': Cong MP's experience on Air India flight aborted before take-off in Kochi
Congress MP Hibi Eden, who was travelling on an Air India flight from Kochi to Delhi, recounted his experience after the take-off was aborted due to a technical problem. He said he felt 'something unusual' and that 'it just felt like the flight skid on the runway'. 'Something unusual with this flight ✈️ AI 504, it just felt like the flight skid on the runway and hasn't taken off yet. Air India cancelled AI 504 and announced a new flight at 1 am which hasn't still started boarding, today is the third flight which has been AOG,' Eden posted on X. He also shared a photograph on Facebook from inside the aircraft, noting that the take-off had been aborted midway. 'The cockpit crew decided to discontinue the take-off run, following Standard Operating Procedures and brought the aircraft back to bay for maintenance checks,' an Air India spokesperson explained. According to the airline, a replacement aircraft was being arranged to operate the flight, which would depart at a later time. 'All passengers have disembarked and our ground colleagues in Kochi are extending support to them. The inconvenience caused to the passengers due to this unforeseen situation is sincerely regretted. At Air India, the safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew remain our top priority,' the airline added. Congress MP KC Venugopal's 'near-miss runway tragedy' claim Hibi Eden's Air India flight experience comes just days after Congress MP KC Venugopal wrote to the Union Civil Aviation Minister, seeking a probe into alleged safety lapses on the Trivandrum-Delhi Air India flight of August 8, on which he and other MPs were passengers. In his letter, shared by ANI, Venugopal reiterated his runway scare claim, stating that the pilot aborted landing at Chennai airport when the aircraft was 'only 30-40 feet' above the ground. Venugopal said the flight, callsign AI 2455, encountered turbulence shortly after departing from Thiruvananthapuram. According to the aircraft left at around 8 pm and landed in Chennai at around 10.35 pm on Sunday. Posting on X shortly after 12 am on Monday, the Congress MP said the flight, carrying several fellow MPs, came 'frighteningly close to tragedy' and was saved by 'skill and luck' following the captain's 'quick decision'. Air India on August 11 rejected Venugopal's claim that the Thiruvananthapuram-Delhi flight AI 2455 experienced a 'heart-stopping' incident because another plane was on the same runway when it attempted to land at Chennai airport, where it had been diverted. The airline clarified that during the first landing attempt, ATC instructed the pilots to perform a go-around after another aircraft departing the same runway reported suspected foreign object debris (FOD) on it. Referring to the June 12 Air India crash, Venugopal described the incident as 'deeply concerning,' adding that it 'raises serious questions about passenger safety protocols, operational decision-making, and the airline's approach to transparency.'
