Media trailblazer Tom Rogers changes ‘raging bull' stance on Netflix, sees worrisome signs
The media trailblazer, who was a self-proclaimed "raging bull" on Netflix, told CNBC's "Fast Money" this week he's starting to worry — and listed competition with free content on YouTube as a headwind.
"[Netflix] still [has] more hit shows than all the other streaming services combined, but when you look at the growth of their sub[scriber] base and look at the amount of total engagement time from all viewers they get, the amount of viewing per viewer has gone down some," said Rogers, who's now executive chairman of AI company Claigrid.
Netflix saw the largest monthly viewership increase versus its peers in June, according to Nielsen. However, YouTube had 13% of total monthly TV viewership while Netflix had 8%.
Rogers' latest take comes after Netflix delivered a positive quarterly report on July 17.
"There was nothing wrong with its earnings at all," said Rogers, who is also a CNBC contributor. "But engagement is what drives everything here. The amount of viewing it gets, it drives price increases, which drive programming budget, which drives more great programming."
Netflix beat second quarter top and bottom line estimates and raised its full-year guidance. But since its earnings report, the streamer's stock is down about 6% and is now off almost 11% since hitting a record high on June 30.
Rogers also predicts artificial intelligence will be a "double-edged sword" for Netflix in the near-term. On the one hand, he said it will aid the streamer's targeted advertising and help cut programming costs. But it also allows independent content creators a leg up — which benefits YouTube.
"The line between professional and amateur content is going to get more and more blurry as AI tools in the hands of amateurs allow them to produce things that look incredibly professional," he said. "I think AI in the hands of the creative community of YouTube could create a level of professional programming for YouTube which drives its viewership even further."
YouTube's parent company, Alphabet, is up 2% so far this year.
Yet, Rogers still considers Netflix maintaining his status as the most valuable media company in the world. However, he said a lag is "something to watch for sure."
Netflix spokesperson Emily Goldstein deferred comment to the company's second-quarter earnings call.

A Forgotten Dwayne Johnson Sci-Fi Movie Is Swallowing The Competition On Netflix
Dwayne Johnson's 2018 blockbuster Rampage is running amok on Netflix, hitting the streamer's top ten this past week, as viewers can't seem to resist the combination of The Rock and giant creatures destroying Chicago. According to FlixPatrol, which measures viewer habits on streaming services, the film has seen a spike after being added to Netflix's library. Rampage isn't usually top of mind when people think about The Rock, so it's not entirely clear why it's such a focus for viewers. The film features Dwayne Johnson as primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who works with gorillas at a San Diego wildlife sanctuary. He's particularly close to George, a highly intelligent albino silverback gorilla who can speak via sign language. George is a gentle giant, but after a scientific experiment on a space station goes awry, the remnants come crashing to earth, where, wouldn't you know, it crashes into George's habitat, and a canister within exposes him to a strange gas. It isn't long before George grows to an enormous size, with fits of uncontrollable rage, and escapes the facility. To make things worse, canisters of the gas also land in Wyoming, creating other large, angry creatures out of the local wildlife. They're on a collision course with George. Of course, that means Dwayne Johnson is going to do Dwayne Johnson things to stop them, and the action and mayhem quickly get out of control. The film also stars Naomie Harris (No Time to Die's Moneypenny) as Dr. Kate Caldwell, a scientist who worked on the genetic experiments now affecting the animals, and she teams up with Dwayne Johnson to stop the threat. Malin Akerman (Watchmen) and Jake Lacy (The Office) star as Claire and Brett Wyden, billionaire siblings who own Energyne, the corporation behind the experiments, and don't want their secrets out. They send out some ex-military types to retrieve them, and the government soon gets involved as the creatures are drawn to Chicago (thanks to a convenient plot device) for a showdown. Justice League's Deathstroke himself, Joe Manganiello, stars as Burke, an independent operator hunting down the creatures for the Wydens, and a very entertaining Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Walking Dead) stars as a government agent trying to capture the creatures. Besides the outstanding digital effects (providing lots of angry monkey action), the movie also has a nice sense of humor, especially when Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Dwayne Johnson go head-to-head and start trading barbs. Released in April of 2018, the film was a box office hit, despite critics who ripped the movie and gave it a 51% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (viewers are more forgiving, giving it a 72% rating). It grossed over $100 million in the United States and over $428 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. Rampage is based on the 1980s video game of the same name, and as you might expect, it has very little resemblance to the final film. The only common denominator is the creatures, who punch buildings in the video game until they fall. Players control the creatures in the game, but the movie version needed a human face for the lead, and the larger-than-life Dwayne Johnson is one of the few actors on the planet who could share the screen with giant CGI creatures and not look out of place. Viewers will likely catch a familiar face in the film's opening moments: Marley Shelton (Scream, Sin City) as the astronaut on the doomed space station where the pathogen is first created. Sadly, another familiar face didn't make the film's final cut: a scene featuring Alexandra Daddario, Dwayne Johnson's co-star in San Andreas, was shot but later discarded. Watch the Galaxy Z Fold 7 do something amazing in this brutal bend test
Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7 became available to buy on Friday, which meant that it also became available for popular tech YouTuber Zack Nelson to subject the handset to his nasty durability test. Nelson set it up nicely by noting the 'fun fact' that none of the phones in Samsung's flagship Fold series have ever snapped in two in the bending part of his durability test. 'However, this new guy, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, is the thinnest Fold yet, so here's to hoping that it finally happens today,' he quips. At the start of the test, the YouTuber (of the channel JerryRigEverything) comments on how gorgeous the Galaxy Z Fold 7 looks. But of course, by the end of the test, the handset is an utter wreck. As is usual with his infamous durability test, Nelson sets to work with various pointy metal tools to test the susceptibility of the $2,000 foldable handset to scratches and other damage. What quickly becomes apparent is that that the Z Fold 7's inner display is as delicate as its predecessors, scratching as it does at a low Mohs hardness level of just 2. While the phone is not dust-resistant, it does have an IP48 rating, meaning that it offers protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm, a fact that prompts Nelson to dump a handful of grit on the inner display before closing it shut. Yes, you will wince. Then comes the bend test. 'The thinness of this phone is wild,' Nelson says of the 4.2mm-when-open design, at the same time suggesting that the device in his hand will not survive 'for more than a few minutes' as Samsung has 'finally gone too far.' The YouTuber then sets about enthusiastically bending it in the direction in which it most definitely should not be bent. For a moment, the phone looks done for. But then, with all of Nelson's brut force applied, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 does something amazing: It remains intact. 'I'm literally flexing the rear glass panel out of the frame without the glass cracking, without the phone cracking, and without the hinge cracking — literal black magic,' Nelson says, adding: 'The Fold 7 is still able to fold completely shut and is still 100% operational.'
