EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy is leaving the BBC soap after more than 30 years.
The 41-year-old, who plays Sonia Fowler, said she was 'extremely sad' but 'very excited' to be leaving.
The BBC has confirmed her final scenes would take place around the soap's 40th anniversary week beginning February 17.

In a statement, she said: 'I feel extremely sad to be writing this, but also very excited.
'After another 11 solid years back on the square, I have decided it's time to move on to pastures new. EastEnders is in my bones so I will never forget where I started my career and I will continue to love the show.
'Thank you to Chris Clenshaw for the opportunity to be such a big part of the 40th anniversary – it's an honour. See you, Sonia, going but never forgotten.'
Usually, when an actor leaves a TV series like a soap, the storyline will allow for them to be written out of future episodes due to their character leaving the town or being killed but the BBC has not confirmed how Cassidy will leave the show.
Her character is currently pregnant with Reiss Colwell's (Jonny Freeman) baby unaware that he killed his ex-wife Debbie (Jenny Meier), a crime Sonia was later charged with but found not guilty after a video emerged of her half-sister Bianca Butcher (Patsy Palmer) confessing to the crime.
EastEnders executive producer Clenshaw said of Cassidy's departure: 'Over the last 31 years in EastEnders, Natalie has been involved in some of the show's most iconic and explosive storylines.
'Her portrayal of Sonia has made her a firm fan favourite amongst the viewers.
'I won't be revealing the finite details relating to her exit, but I can say that she will take a central role in the 40th anniversary storylines in a week of truly unmissable drama that will change the lives of those in Walford forever.
'I'd like to thank Natalie for her time at EastEnders, and I wish her all the best for the future.'
Her character is best known for her poor trumpet playing which angered her family and neighbours during her early days on the soap.
Some of Sonia's biggest storylines include her being bullied by her friend Clare Bates (Gemma Bissix) after she fell in with the wrong crowd at school and her teenage pregnancy with later-husband Martin Fowler (Jon Peyton-Price/James Alexandrou).

Cassidy made her first appearance in the soap in 1993, leaving the soap in 2007.
She returned briefly between 2010 and 2011 and later went back to Walford in 2014.
The soap's 40th anniversary will also see the return of Phil Mitchell's (Steve McFadden) brother Grant (Ross Kemp) after a near 10-year absence.
It will also see fans given a vote on whether Denise Fox (Diane Parish) reunites with her estranged husband Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) or picks secret lover Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara).

Best Netflix shows with a lot of seasons you should binge-watch right now

If you're like us, you're getting a bit frustrated about having to wait for all of your favorite streaming shows to finish filming and come back with a fresh new batch of episodes. (We're looking at you, "Bridgerton," "The Diplomat" and "Emily in Paris.") If that's the case, these top-notch Netflix shows with a lot of seasons — we're talking a minimum of six, at least — should certainly keep you busy (and entertained) while you wait. Unlike one-and-done miniseries, these lengthy shows have the scope and space to stretch out, letting viewers get to know their characters and follow them across several years. (Or, at the very least, across several days, if you're a binge-watcher.) Whether you're in the mood for a crime-family drama led by an Oscar winner, a cackle-worthy sitcom starring two undeniable legends, or a prison-set saga that pretty much put the streaming service on the map, here are three Netflix shows with a lot of seasons that you should add to your next watch list. To say that "Orange is the New Black" is a huge reason for Netflix's dominance today isn't an understatement — running for seven seasons from 2013 to 2019, it was one of Netflix's first original series and brought in both commercial popularity and critical acclaim during the streamer's early years, including 16 Emmy Award nominations and four wins. Over 91 episodes, "OITNB" follows the lives, loves, losses and legal battles of the women inmates at Litchfield Penitentiary, a minimum-security women's federal prison in Upstate New York, with Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) — a clean-cut public relations executive whose drug-running past eventually catches up with her, landing her in prison for 15 months — acting as the audience's proxy. Along the way, Chapman has to adjust to life behind bars as well as the often eccentric, sometimes violent, always interesting convicts now populating her new life. Before he was winning an Academy Award for his explosively great portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer," Cillian Murphy was making things blow up on the small screen as Tommy Shelby, the leader of a notorious street gang in post-WWI Birmingham in "Peaky Blinders." The BBC drama series, which took on a new life when it was added to Netflix's library in 2014, only had 36 episodes across six seasons (this is a British show, after all), but it manages to pack in a lot, following Murphy's unrelentingly ambitious crime boss as he deals with the Italian mafia, corrupt Catholic priests, Russian aristocrats, dastardly Irish cops, lingering wartime PTSD and more. Watch "Peaky Blinders" on Netflix now We'd watch Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in anything, but especially in "Grace and Frankie," the seven-season comedy that sees the two legendary performers playing our eponymous pair of women — sharp-tongued cosmetics mogul Grace Hanson and quirky artist Frankie Bergstein, respectively — who form an unlikely friendship after their husbands reveal they are in love with each other and plan to get married. Over 94 half-hour episodes, Frankie and Grace will have you interchangeably laughing and crying as you watch them hilariously and heartwarmingly get through such a major change in their family dynamics, and become family for each other in the process. Vanessa Feltz shares the truth behind Naga Munchetty's 'diva-like behaviour' amid 'bullying' probe

Vanessa Feltz has spoken out over claims Naga Munchetty has been 'rude' to younger members of staff. In June, the BBC Breakfast presenter, 50, was accused of 'bullying' a female colleague and making an off-air sex joke. Last week, it was alleged that Munchetty scolded an intern for the way they spread Marmite on her toast at the BBC's flagship morning show. Feltz has now defended the fellow TV journalist and urged critics to understand the pressures of live television. 'Before judging Naga for any diva-like behaviour, consider the demands of live early morning TV. There's no time for politeness,' the Celebs Go Dating star wrote in her Daily Express column. 'With no ad breaks, BBC presenters, who have been up since 3am, have to swallow snacks at speed while producers bark directions in their earpieces and hair and makeup staff descend to touch-up.' Feltz went on: 'A swift, mildly rattled 'could you go easy on the Marmite?' might sound hostile to an inexperienced intern, but the chances are it's not meant to be anything but short sharp communication from someone harangued and hungry.' Last week, The Sun claimed Munchetty was irate with an intern over how they prepared her toast. A source added to the Daily Mail: 'She's an absolute nightmare. She has a reputation for going at young members of staff and making them out to be fools.' The Standard has contacted Munchetty's representative for comment. The BBC said: 'While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously.' Munchetty usually presents BBC Breakfast alongside co-star Charlie Stayt, 63, every Thursday to Saturday, while Jon Kay, 55, and Sally Nugent, 54, host at the beginning of the week. Munchetty and Stayt are being assessed and are under review after concerns were raised about their behaviour behind the scenes, according to a report from The Sun last week. An external HR adviser from consultancy firm PwC has reportedly been working with the BBC to examine workplace culture on the long-running programme. A source told the outlet: 'A number of people have come forward to share their experiences with Charlie, so the BBC has officially moved to place the complaints under review. 'Charlie and Naga will be assessed separately.' Staff are said to have raised concerns about 'rudeness', 'bullying', and conduct that allegedly undermined team members. It comes after BBC Breakfast editor Richard Frediani stepped away from his role for an extended period following a series of bullying allegations. Munchetty, who joined the show in 2014, has reportedly been spoken to by bosses over two separate incidents in a three-year period. The Radio 5 Live presenter was allegedly spoken to by senior BBC figures after reportedly making a sex-related remark during her radio show. It's claimed she used a crude slang term and asked a colleague whether they had ever performed the act in question. Last month, it was reported that she is weighing up her future at the BBC, despite receiving a £10,000 pay rise and remaining one of the broadcaster's top-paid stars. It was alleged that she is said to be considering a move to rival station LBC due to the recent alleged internal controversies. Solve the daily Crossword

Man who helped bomb 2017 Ariana Grande concert charged with attempted murder for prison guard attack

The brother of the suicide bomber who killed 22 people at a 2017 Ariana Grande concert has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly attacking four prison guards with a makeshift blade and hot cooking oil at a high-security lockup, according to reports. Hashem Abedi, 28, left three of the officers hospitalized with serious injuries after the attack on April 11 at the high-security HMP Frankland in Durham, England, the Guardian reported. Abedi allegedly attacked the four guards by dumping hot cooking oil over them and stabbing them with a makeshift knife, the outlet said. Abedi also faces additional charges of unauthorized possession of a knife, according to reports. Advertisement Abedi was sentenced in 2020 to at least 55 years in prison after being found guilty of 22 murders for helping his brother, Salman Abedi, plan a mass slaughter at the Manchester Arena show that also left hundreds injured. He was transferred to another prison after the attack on the guards and can be prosecuted under counterterrorism protocol — allowing prosecutors to argue the assault was terror-motivated, BBC reported. Counter Terrorism Policing North East carried out a 'thorough investigation' of the incident with Durham Constabulary and HMP Frankland, the authority told the outlet. Abedi helped source, buy, stockpile, and transport the components for his brother's bomb, using a number of phones, vehicles, and addresses in preparation for the attack, prosecutors said. 'He has blood on his hands even if he didn't detonate the bomb,' Max Hill, Britain's director of public prosecutions, said at his trial. Another 237 concertgoers were injured, and 670 survivors reported suffering from psychological trauma. The 'No Tears Left to Cry' singer, Grande, has also said she suffers post-traumatic stress disorder. Advertisement Abedi will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Sept 18, records indicate. The Ministry of Justice will do a full investigation into the incident.
