SP to raise issues of ‘targeted social media campaigns' at all-party meet on Pahalgam attack

Indian Express24-04-2025
The Samajwadi Party (SP), which will participate in the all-party meeting called by the Centre over the Pahalgam attack on Thursday, will flag to the government the 'targeted social media campaigns' and 'attempts of political leaders on social media to spew venom in society'.
SP principal general secretary and Rajya Sabha MP, Ramgopal Yadav will be the party's representative at the meeting.
Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said no party should look to reap political benefits from such incidents. 'It is the responsibility of the Centre to ensure fake news or those likely to pose a threat to the internal and border security of the country do not make the rounds on social media,' he said.
Calling the government to take action against the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack, Akhilesh said terrorists have no religion. 'Their purpose is only to create fear, stall the lives of people and create trouble for the country,' he said.
Akhilesh also extended support to the decisions of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) and said, 'More stringent decisions must be taken… and they need to be implemented strictly. It must not be merely a statement,' he said.
In an apparent reference to the CCS' decision to put the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance, Akhilesh said, 'Do we have arrangements to stop the flow of water (to Pakistan)? It is a long process.'

'We have set a new normal in tackling cross-border terrorism. I salute our brave soldiers who delivered a punishment for the Pahalgam attack far beyond the enemy's imagination.' PM Modi said that India and its farmers have sole rights over the country's share of the Indus river waters, branding the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan as 'unjust and one-sided.' PM Modi said the decades-old agreement had caused 'enormous harm' to Indian agriculture, allowing rivers originating in India to irrigate 'the fields of our enemies' while leaving Indian soil and farmers parched. Sukhu said the event would promote environmental conservation and showcase the unique art and culture of the district. It would provide tourists an opportunity to know the region better. He said that the festival symbolises the commitment to preserving its heritage and would inspire people to celebrate responsibly. Sukhu said that climate change has posed serious challenges to the country and the state and Lahaul-Spiti was no exception, with unusually heavy rainfall in the district being a major cause of concern. The state government was taking all possible measures to provide relief during disasters and was working with the Centre to ensure environmental protection. The chief minister said that Lahaul-Spiti had emerged as a model district in women empowerment and the traditional products of the area would be promoted under the 'Him-Ira' brand. Sukhu also laid the foundation stone for five bridges in Udaipur sub-division under PMGSY Phase-3, to be built at a cost of ₹36,41,78,000. A budget provision of ₹100 crore has been made for this purpose. 'This year, saplings were being planted across 1,000 to 1,500 hectares of forest land at a cost of ₹20 crore. A local is attacked, prompting Meghalaya to seek fence closer to border with Bangladesh

The Meghalaya government has urged the Centre to negotiate the possibility of building a fence closer to the international boundary than existing norms allow in the unfenced stretch of the state's border with Bangladesh. This comes after an incident in Rongdanggai village in the South West Khasi Hills close to the Bangladesh border, in which a local was injured after being assaulted and stabbed late on August 8, allegedly by a group of Bangladeshi nationals who had illegally crossed the border. Following a review meeting with the DCs and SPs of all districts of the state Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong said that security has been ramped up along the border. 'Instructions have been given to districts that they have to be more proactive because quite a number of incidents have happened. Number one is that illegal infiltration takes place everywhere, right from East Jaintia Hills to Dalu side [West Garo Hills] all along the international border between India and Bangladesh. We are alert and we are sure our police force will be able to map and push back infiltrators,' he said. Meghalaya has a 443 km long international border with Bangladesh, in which a stretch of around 40 km remains unfenced. In line with the 1975 Joint India-Bangladesh Guidelines for Border Authorities, neither country can construct a defence structure within 140 yards from the zero line or the international boundary on either side. Deputy Chief Minister Tynsong said that the Meghalaya government is pushing the Centre to negotiate for an exception in Meghalaya's case. 'Quite a number of complications arise in this unfenced area. Number one is that international norms say it [fence] should be 150 yards inside the country. It so happens that there are a number of villages in that area, that if the fencing is carried out, these villages will be outside the fence. If it is outside the fencing it more or less means that it falls under the no man's land,' he said. He went on to say: 'In these circumstances, we have taken it up with the Ministry of Home Affairs to try to convince the government of Bangladesh that because of this reality, let us go close to the main pillar of the border. So that we can avoid fencing outside the villages'.
