'Tron: Ares' brings the Grid, and the light bikes, to Comic-Con
The film stars Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith as the story brings the virtual environment of the Grid, complete with light bikes, into the real world.
Disney showed off several minutes of footage, including a light bike chase scene in the real world and another in the red-hued Grid. Propelling the onscreen action is a propulsive Nine Inch Nails soundtrack.
'It's fun to see it on the big screen for the first time,' said director Joachim Rønning.
Disney turned the Hall H panel into a spectacle, with red lasers filling the room and characters in suits with red lights entering the massive hall.
Asked what excited her about joining the 'Tron' franchise, Lee responded: 'I just wanted to ride a light cycle.'
Leto spoke affectionately about the original saying: 'This movie just grabbed a hold of me and took me to a place that I'd never been before. It kind of rattled my imagination and it kind of showed me what was possible in the world.'
He praised Bridges and Steven Lisberger, who created 'Tron' and directed the 1982 original. Lisberger attended Friday's panel and laid out his case for why the franchise remains relevant.
'My feeling about 'Tron' is that the most important thing is we kick this technology around artistically before it kicks us around,' Lisberger said.
'I am weary about hearing all the grim news about the future,' he said, and the way he thinks it can be avoided is to 'inspire young people what can be done with this technology.'
Friday's panel ended with the premiere of the music video for "As Alive as You Need Me to Be," the first Nine Inch Nails song from the soundtrack.
'Tron' has never been in the top tier of sci-fi franchises. The original 1982 film starring Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a man sucked into a computer vortex known as the Grid, was admired for its ground-breaking concept and effects, and was a modest hit with moderately good reviews.
Perhaps more importantly, it won a cult following and has been maintained enough in cultural memory to remain a valuable property for Disney.
The 2010 film 'Tron: Legacy,' starring Bridges and Garrett Hedlund, made more than $400 million globally. A TV show that followed, 'Tron: Uprising,' lasted just one season.
Rønning has helmed other Disney franchise films: 2017's 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales' and 2019's 'Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.' The Norweigan director said he was interested because he dreamed about making a sci-fi film and enjoyed the twist of 'Ares' bringing the Grid into the real world.

Joe Exotic says he will die in prison unless Trump pardons him
Would-be killer and ex-'Tiger King' star Joe Exotic claims he is now riddled with cancer and will die in prison unless President Trump pardons him — insisting to The Post, 'I will not make it another five years.' The 62-year-old felon — who is in federal lockup in Fort Worth, Texas, for a murder-for-hire plot against his rival — said he fears he won't even make it to his parole eligibility in 2030 because his cancer tumors just keep growing. 'I'm not gonna make it. I'm gonna die,' the ex-Netflix star said in an exclusive phone interview Monday while serving a 21-year sentence for plotting to kill big-cat arch-rival Carole Baskin and for violating federal wildlife laws. And that's why I plead to President Trump so hard. … With the cancer that I have, let me get out and find some real medical care instead of the taxpayers paying for half-assed medical care. Advertisement 'Try going through that [chemo] for a year, puking your ass off by yourself in a concrete room,' he added. Getty Images Exotic — who starred in Netflix's 2020 'Tiger King' true-crime series about his life and dark slide while caring for exotic big cats at his zoo in Oklahoma — insisted his health woes have only worsened due partly to the stress of his husband, Jorge Flores Maldonado, being deported to Mexico from the US earlier this year. 'I'm dealing with prostate cancer, lung cancer. I'm waiting for a [positron emission tomography] scan because I think the prostate cancer is in my ribs now,' Exotic said. 'And the stress of [Jorge] being in Mexico with nothing. He's living like a homeless person right now, and there's nothing I can do to help because I'm stuck in here.' Obtained by the New York Post The fallen star's migrant hubby was booted from the US by ICE in May after getting busted late last year for allegedly driving a car loaded with six other undocumented immigrants across the US-Mexican border. The pair met and fell in love while in prison when Maldonado was there on immigration raps. Exotic, betting Trump to step in and spring him early from the pokey, told The Post: 'Let me get up and pay my own bills and work and try and make it the next five years so I can bring Jorge back to America.' But he also suggested he has come to terms with the fact he'll likely die behind bars. 'I've already got my will done. So everything goes to Jorge so he can at least move on,' he said. 'I have nothing, absolutely nothing. So, you know at this point right now, I wish cancer would hurry up and take me before I have to endure five more years of hell in America.'

James Cameron Wants to Do an ‘Avatar' Animated Anthology Movie
The lush new Avatar: Fire and Ash trailer just dropped today—the movie's in theaters December 19—but James Cameron is already thinking about what's next for Pandora. Not just Avatar 4 and beyond; though the films are famously on the cutting edge of motion-capture technology, Cameron would like to dig deeper into their world using a more traditional form of animation. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Cameron revealed he's had conversations with Disney about further expanding the reach of stories revolving around Pandora. 'I said, 'Look, I want to do an animated anthology series that's essentially in the world, but stories that you wouldn't have expected from that world.' There might even be an animated feature in there—it might be a feature for streaming, or a theatrical feature.' He pointed to The Animatrix, the 2003 animated anthology film set in the world of The Matrix, as an inspiration. '[It's a great example] for how we can add texture and baroque detail to the world of Avatar,' he said, with 'backstory on characters and tangential stuff that happened off-camera within the movies. Who first landed on Pandora? The first expedition. You could go anywhere you want.' As exciting as that sounds, Cameron isn't ready to predict a release date this early in the process. 'We haven't done much with that yet. We're still gathering our stories and that sort of thing … I've got to find the boutique filmmakers, the animators, that want to do it.' Considering how popular Avatar is—and how enticingly rich a canvas Pandora would provide—it doesn't seem like it'll be too hard for Cameron to round up the talent for an animated anthology. He'll just have to find the time to do it. Would you be interested in an Animatrix-style Avatar animated story? Want more io9 news?
