CPM seeks release of cadres over clashes with BJP men
2
Dindigul: The CPM, led by MPs in Madurai and Dindigul, on Saturday held protests in their respective districts after several party cadres were injured in a clash with BJP and Hindu Munnani members at a street-corner meeting organised by the party on Friday at Thadikombu in Dindigul.
Based on complaints from both parties, police arrested people from both sides and remanded them on Saturday.
The altercation occurred on Friday morning, at one of the meetings organised as part of a statewide public campaign by CPM in Thadikombu to highlight people's demands and criticise Union govt policies. An argument ensued between CPM cadres and BJP-Hindu Munnani members who were nearby over criticism regarding the Murugan devotees conference in Madurai.
The verbal confrontation escalated into a scuffle. Tensions rose again near Dindigul govt medical college hospital where the injured were taken.
Police finally dispersed the crowd and detained several cadres from CPM, BJP, and Hindu Munnani.
CPM state secretary P Shanmugam condemned the arrest of CPM cadres in this connection. "BJP and Hindu Munnani cadres were the ones engaging in violent acts that led to our cadres being hospitalised.
Hindu Munnani members are trying to create a distraction and even going as far as labelling us as extremists. People of Tamil Nadu know who really engages in hate and communal extremism for political gain," he said.
The senior CPM leader demanded immediate release of the arrested cadres and action against all BJP and HM cadres responsible for the assault. In Madurai, MP Su Venkatesan condemned the Murugan devotees conference being held in Madurai saying religious hate politics of the BJP must be rejected.

'Vote chori' row: Dismissed Karnataka minister K Rajanna may be expelled from Congress; high command okays action amid internal turmoil
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah dismissed Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna following Congress high command's directive, triggered by Rajanna's public disagreement with Rahul Gandhi's vote theft allegations. BENGALURU: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah Monday removed cooperation minister KN Rajanna from the cabinet following a directive from the Congress high command, two days after the minister publicly ridiculed Rahul Gandhi's allegations on vote theft. The resignation was not without a touch of drama as Rajanna, a staunch supporter of Siddaramaiah, offered to resign and went to the chief minister's office on Monday. However, the high command insisted that Siddaramaiah must formally dismiss him as a disciplinary measure. Acting on the party's instructions, Siddaramaiah sent a recommendation to the governor, who accepted the removal notifying Rajanna's ouster from the ministry Monday afternoon. Next, Rajanna may be expelled from the party in a strong message to dissenters. On Saturday, Rajanna publicly disputed Rahul's attempt to blame EC and the BJP-led central govt for irregularities in the electoral rolls, particularly in the Mahadevapura segment of Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency. Row echoes in assembly One should remember voter lists were revised when our own govt was at the helm. Why did our party turn a blind eye then? It is true there are irregularities, but it is insulting to us that it happened right under our nose,' Rajanna said. On Aug 8, Rahul led a protest in Bengaluru, doubling down on his charge that EC colluded with BJP to allow over one lakh bogus votes in Mahadevapura, which helped BJP win Bangalore Central Lok Sabha seat last year. Rajanna pointed out that objections to draft electoral rolls were invited soon after they were prepared. 'What were we doing then? Shouldn't we have checked the draft electoral rolls after they were published? We should've filed objections. Having been quiet then, we're raising this now,' he said. The controversy spilled into the assembly Monday afternoon. BJP's R Ashoka said, 'Rajanna represents ST (Valmiki). Bihar 2025: Why BJP Eyes Upcoming Assembly Polls As Power Play For 2027 Presidency
For the BJP, the assembly elections in Bihar are not just about forming a state government, but about a crucial political development in the offing. They are about reclaiming national dominance in time for the presidential election due in 2027. Internally, senior political and poll strategists of the BJP have marked Bihar as a 'priority" state. And it has now become more critical than even Maharashtra or Uttar Pradesh in the coming cycle, News18 has learnt. The urgency and growing significance stem from certain numbers. According to a senior source in the BJP ranks, the party's electoral college edge for the presidential poll has dropped from 69 percent to just 52 percent after the 2024 Lok Sabha results. That slip has triggered alarms in Delhi. With little addition expected from West Bengal, Kerala, or Punjab, and, with Uttar Pradesh maxed out and Uttarakhand already being saturated, the party now has only two realistic growth zones that include Tamil Nadu and Bihar – a short-term imperative. THE MATH THAT MATTERS This calculation makes the upcoming Bihar polls a make-or-break situation. The BJP aims at increasing its seat share by at least 35, not only to form the government but to build a decisive buffer for 2027 that is seen as a contest the party cannot afford to lose. Every assembly seat from Bihar contributes to the strength of the electoral college, and the state's 243 seats can significantly tilt the balance. This, meanwhile, adds freshness to the political equation, which is clearly about the absence of succession drama in the JD(U). Sources said Nishant Kumar, son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is not likely to contest the assembly polls. 'Both Nitish and the BJP want to avoid a dynastic narrative in this sensitive situation. For the BJP, this clears the way to take over the NDA command in Bihar, sidestepping legacy issues and allegations," a senior BJP leader said. 'The party is also doing everything it can possibly do to avoid internal sabotage like in 2020. This time, Chirag (Paswan) is seeking more seats, overlapping with the JD(U) turf. The BJP is, however, trying to rein him in to avoid rupturing the alliance, or antagonising Nitish Kumar," said another source.

Punjab: Opposition leaders, farmers hail land pooling policy's withdrawal
With the state government on Monday withdrawing its much-hyped land pooling policy, Opposition leaders as well as farmers welcomed the decision, terming it a victory for the people. Farmers during a rally against the land pooling policy at the Golden Gate in Amritsar on Monday. (Sameer Sehgal/HT) Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring said farmers stood vindicated in their opposition to the land pooling policy which would not only have 'turned them into paupers, but would have damaged Punjab socially, economically and environmentally'. 'It is a victory for the farmers,' he said, claiming that the state government's aim was to 'rob' farmers of the land worth lakhs of crores of rupees 'without any compensation and without their consent'. Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar said the BJP had been strongly opposing the AAP government's land pooling policy which aimed to 'seize' farmers' land. 'The party actively raised public awareness about it. Ultimately, the government was forced to withdraw the policy. This is a victory for the unity of Punjab's people. Congratulations to Punjab's farmers,' he said. Ashwani Sharma, working president of BJP's Punjab unit, said the party had been fighting against the land pooling policy from day one. 'The Punjab BJP had already announced a 'Zameen bachao, kisan bachao yatra' which was to begin from Patiala on 17 August and conclude in Pathankot on 5 September,' he said. Meanwhile, Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of Shiromani Akali Dal, said, 'The scrapping of the policy is a victory for Punjabis.' Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) president Joginder Singh Ugrahan said it was a victory for farmers and all the people who are associated with agriculture. Ugrahan said the policy would have negatively impacted a large part of the state's population. 'Along with farmers, a large population in Punjab is associated with agriculture. Labourers, merchants and shopkeepers, almost 46% of the population of Punjab, are dependent on agriculture. Today, the youth may be educated, but they are not getting jobs. So, agriculture is the sole source of income for us,' he said. Ugrahan stated that the scheme had nothing to do with benefiting farmers and that the decision to implement it was taken in a haste. 'If they were to establish the colonies, they should have acquired the land which is non-fertile. The decision of withdrawal is good and the victory is the result of the unity of the farmers,' he said. Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta-Ughrahan) general secretary Sukhdev Singh Kokrikalan said the 'recall of the policy clearly shows that people of Punjab are aware of their rights and the government has to bow before their might.' Earlier in the day, farmers in Jalandhar, under the banner of Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) (non-political), took out a bike rally in parts of Doaba region against the land pooling scheme. Amritsar too saw a similar rally by farmers. Under the policy, the state government intended to acquire 65,533 acres in 21 cities and towns to set up residential areas.
