C'magaluru women cops are now friends of girls in hostels

Time of India2 days ago
Chikkamagaluru: The women police officers in Chikkamagaluru have become Aarakshak Gelati (police friend) for hostel girls to ensure safety and instil confidence among the students.
The district police came up with a novel initiative to ensure the safety of girl students by deputing women PSIs as nodal officers for girls' hostels across the district. The officers would pay surprise visits to the hostels and interact with the girl students to ensure safety in hostels as well as other places. The officers are also creating legal awareness among them.
A student, S Varsha, said the initiative is really good and helpful for the students.
"We get confidence and can share sensitive issues with the police without any fear as we will be protected and safe," she added. Mahesh, parent of a girl student, said that after two girl students' deaths in a hostel, parents were worried about their children's safety in hostels.
Now, it's a bit of relief, and the police must ensure effectiveness. It would be better if the police visit the hostels at least once a week. If any student is found disturbed or not normal, then the police should interact with their parents and also closely monitor them.

PSIs will visit hostels once a month
According to superintendent of police Vikram Amate, women PSIs were appointed as nodal officers for 91 girls' hostels in the district. They will visit the hostels once a month to implement an innovative programme called Aarakshak Gelati. Women PSIs, under the guidance of the SP, made surprise visits to girls' and women's hostels, interacted with the inmates, their parents, and teaching and non-teaching staff, addressing issues and raising awareness about laws related to Pocso, child rights, child marriage, cybercrimes, traffic rules, and drugs, thereby boosting their morale.
In addition, they inspected the hostels' buildings, mess, teaching rooms, premises, CCTV operations, security guards, and overall safety. The police also checked food distribution, accommodation facilities, cleanliness of toilets, any harassment from outsiders, the hostel's surroundings, medical facilities during health issues, and the behaviour of hostel staff towards the girls. The nodal officers also inspected the girls' rooms with hostel supervisors for items like knives, scissors, other metal objects, electronics, unauthorised medicines, self-cooking, and outside parcels.
Reports were submitted to principals and relevant authorities, said the SP.
Hostels were instructed to display emergency contact numbers on notice boards, including: Child Helpline - 1098; ERSS - 112; Control Room - 9480805100. Correspondence was made with principals to ensure these helpline numbers are accessible in case of emergencies.

ED arrests Baghel's son in Chhattisgarh liquor ‘scam'

PTI photo RAIPUR: Enforcement Directorate arrested on Friday Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel, from his residence in Bhilai after the agency conducted an early morning search at his premises in connection with an alleged Rs 2,100 crore liquor scam during his father's tenure as CM. Chaitanya was presented at a special PMLA court in Raipur which sent him to five-day ED custody, an agency official said, adding that Chaitanya did not cooperate during the searches. The father-son duo stays in the same house, while Baghel also has an MLA residence in Raipur. When ED carried out searches, Baghel was at his Raipur residence and was proceeding to Vidhan Sabha. The timing of the raid, on the last day of the assembly session, triggered sharp political reactions, particularly from the opposition Congress. Bid to suppress debate on tree-felling: Congress ED's early-morning raid and the subsequent arrest of former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel's son Chaitanya set off sharp reactions, with Congress alleging that the move was designed to suppress discussion on deforestation in Tamnar region of Raigarh district linked to a particular industrialist. ED had earlier searched Chaitanya Baghel's premises on March 10 while probing some transactions allegedly linking him and his entities to 'proceeds of crime' in the liquor 'scam' case. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The agency did not disclose details of the charges against Chaitanya, but in an earlier press note, it had claimed that some senior bureaucrat, having protection of 'top executive of the state', carried out the scam. Reacting to the arrest, Baghel Senior said the Centre was misusing its agencies to target opposition netas. 'To please their master PM Modi and Amit Shah, they have sent ED to my house. We won't be scared or bow down,' he said. He, however, said he would cooperate with the probe. In this case, ED had in Jan arrested former excise minister Kawasi Lakhma; Anwar Dhebar, brother of Raipur mayor and Congress's Aijaz Dhebar; and senior babus, including IAS officer Anil Tuteja and a telecom service officer, Arunpati Tripathi. After the arrest of Lakhma, ED had claimed that he was 'aware of the complete affairs of the liquor scam, yet he did nothing to stop it'. The agency has accused Lakhma of receiving Rs 2 crore every month from the syndicate involved in illegal liquor trade. ED had also said Lakhma played an important role in policy change, which led to the introduction of FL-10A licence in Chhattisgarh. 'He was an integral part of the syndicate and assisted it by manoeuvring the process and procedures as per their direction,' it said. The agency has so far attached assets worth over Rs 200 crore in the case. Baghel later said, 'The adjournment motion moved by Congress in the Chhattisgarh assembly over tree felling being carried out by Adani Group in Tamnar was disallowed by Speaker Raman Singh. The opposition alleged that there has been no adherence to the PESA Act, no compliance with directives issued by the National Green Tribunal, and even the resolution unanimously passed by the state assembly has been disregarded. Not even a discussion was permitted.' Bringing an adjournment motion in the assembly, leader of the opposition Charandas Mahant and Baghel alleged in their speeches that 'Tamnar coal mine, which has been allotted to Maharashtra State Power Generation Company with its mine operator and developer being Adani, is being run solely for the benefit of a single industrialist, while local residents are being harassed and displaced'.

Trump vs WSJ explodes: US President sues Murdoch, Wall Street Journal over Epstein letter story; seeks grand jury unsealing

US President Donald Trump US President Donald Trump has filed a libel and slander lawsuit against Dow Jones, News Corp, two Wall Street Journal reporters, and the paper's owner Rupert Murdoch. The legal action comes just a day after Trump threatened to sue the Journal over a report alleging he had sent a sexually suggestive birthday letter to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The lawsuit was filed in the federal court for the Southern District of Florida, based in Miami. A full copy of the complaint has not yet been made public. The Wall Street Journal had reported that, in 2003, then-real estate mogul Donald Trump allegedly sent Jeffrey Epstein a suggestive birthday letter -- complete with a nude illustration and a reference to their shared 'secret.' Now, in a parallel effort to calm anger among his supporters over Epstein-related conspiracy theories, Trump has directed Attorney General Pam Bondi to seek the unsealing of grand jury testimony from the prosecution against Epstein. Bondi, in a filing submitted in New York, cited the 'extensive public interest' in the case to justify the unusual legal step of requesting access to what is typically sealed testimony. Epstein, a longtime acquaintance of Trump and other powerful men, was found dead in a New York prison cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sexually abusing dozens of underage girls in New York and Florida. His death, officially ruled a suicide, ignited a wave of conspiracy theories, particularly among Trump's far-right base, who believe in the existence of a global ring of elite pedophiles. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Since returning to power for a second term in January, Trump has faced growing demands from his supporters to reveal what they believe is Epstein's secret list of clients. However, Bondi appeared to close the door on that speculation with an official memo in July declaring that no such list exists. This discontent within the 'Make America Great Again' movement marks a rare moment of tension between Trump and his core voter base -- one that challenges his usual grip on the political narrative. It remains unclear whether the courts will approve the release of the grand jury material — or if, even if unsealed, it would address the central claims driving the conspiracy theories about Epstein's connections and alleged client list. Pressed by reporters on Friday about whether he would push for broader disclosure of Epstein-related documents, Trump offered no response.

Suspended for media byte, IIT-B pupil to be reinstated

Mumbai: IIT-Bombay must reinstate a Ph D student who had been suspended in April this year for 'giving unauthorised interviews to the media'. Bombay high court has said this in an order passed on July 15. The court said that the suspension will cease to have effect from July 25 and the period of suspension undergone will not have any bearing on the record of the petitioner. An official from the institute said they would follow the court's order. The student, Akshay Sawant, from department of humanities and social sciences, was suspended for eight months based on a report of the institute's fact-finding committee and disciplinary action committee. He moved court seeking quashing of the suspension order, stating that the charges levelled were unfounded and misplaced and the action taken against him was based on 'false, unreasonable and arbitrary charges'. The student said in the petition that he did not give consent for the quote to the mediaperson, which he had also submitted before the fact-finding committee. The student received an order on Apr 28, suspending him till Dec 31, 2025, with immediate effect. Even after writing to the institute appealing against the order, there was no response, forcing the student to move court. Disposing of the petition, the court mentioned that the order was passed in the peculiar facts and circumstances of the case so that the academic career of the petitioner should not be jeopardised. The order said he had made the statements in the article in an individual capacity. Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle, a student collective, on Friday said in a statement they were celebrating "victory for students' rights and a pushback against casteist and authoritarian tendencies of the IIT- Bombay administration…"
