Keanu Reeves' John Wick seemingly died at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, with the final scene featuring Ian McShane's Winston Scott and Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King standing over the character's grave… but the assassin's journey on the big screen isn't over. In fact, things are significantly heating up in the future of the franchise, as today we got news of three new John Wick projects that are officially in development, including John Wick: Chapter 5.
CinemaCon, the annual convention for movie theater owners, is playing out in Las Vegas this week, and during this morning's studio presentation from Lionsgate, the studio announced that the John Wick franchise is expanding in a major way. While director Len Wiseman's Ballerina starring Ana de Armas isn't set to arrive on the big screen until the summer, there are now three other features on the way as well, the titles including John Wick: Chapter 5, the spinoff Caine starring Donnie Yen, and an animated prequel film.
Despite the death of the titular character in John Wick: Chapter 4, it took very little time after the release of the film for chatter to begin about a John Wick: Chapter 5, with a studio executive confirming development of the project in May 2023. Director Chad Stahelski has shared some doubt about the sequel, but now it has been announced that both he and Keanu Reeves are officially attached to make another film.
Specific plans for production have not been revealed, and the official announcement included neither a release date not the name of a screenwriter who will pen the script. Apparently, however, Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski and producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee have found a story that they want to tell.
When one considers the box office performance of John Wick: Chapter 4, this isn't the most shocking development – even with acknowledging the death of the eponymous hero. The 2023 sequel was the biggest hit yet for the series, as it finished its run at the box office earning over $440 million worldwide (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum previously set the franchise high water mark making $326.7 million in 2019.
Needless to say, John Wick: Chapter 5 is a project that we here at CinemaBlend will be keeping a close eye on as it continues to move through development.
One of the key reasons why John Wick: Chapter 4 was such a massive success with both critics and audiences was the exciting franchise addition of Donnie Yen as the blind, hyper-skilled assassin Caine, and it was announced today that the hype has been translated into a spinoff film. A new spinoff simply titled Caine is now in the works, and it is coming together very fast.
Donnie Yen will not only be back to star in the upcoming action movie set in the world of John Wick, but he is also going to direct it as well. Yen last provided an update about the film earlier this year, but the project now has the greenlight, and production is going to start in Hong Kong in 2025.
Mattson Tomlin, best known for creating the Netflix animated series Terminator Zero, has been tapped to write the screenplay for the film. The filmmaker's other upcoming projects include The Batman Part II, which is being written in collaboration with director Matt Reeves, and BRZRKR, which is based on the comic of the same name and has Keanu Reeves attached to star.
Details about the story are being kept a secret for now, but it has been confirmed that Caine will be taking place after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 and the titular protagonist earning his freedom from the sinister assassin organization known as the High Table. The character was originally going to be killed by Rina Sawayama's Akira in the end credits of the last John Wick movie, but an audible was called to spare the character's life, and that has opened the door for the spinoff.
While both John Wick: Chapter 5 and Caine will both be expanding the John Wick canon beyond the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate also announced a new film that will be exploring the past. While the project seemingly doesn't have an official title just yet, an animated prequel movie has been given the green light, and it will tell the story of the legendary Impossible Task that Keanu Reeves' character completed so that he could leave the assassin life behind and live a life of peace with his wife.
Shannon Tindle, who most recently co-wrote and directed the Netflix animated film Ultraman: Rising, is taking the helm of the developing film and collaborating with screenwriter Vanessa Taylor, who was a co-executive producer on the second and third seasons of Game Of Thrones and co-wrote Guillermo del Toro's Best Picture-winning 2017 film The Shape Of Water.
In an official statement, Chad Stahelski (who is a producer on the project) described the developing prequel feature as a 'John Wick anime' – which informs us about the animation style that will be employed – and Keanu Reeves will be back to voice the movie's lead character.
A release date for the animated John Wick prequel has not been announced.
Clearly the future of the action franchise is quite bright, and we will continue to follow all of the big developments with these three movies in the weeks, months and years ahead. Audiences will be able to see the next story in the canon, Ballerina, when it arrives in theaters everywhere on June 6, and be sure to stay tuned here on CinemaBlend in the coming days for more exciting news out of CinemaCon.

James Gunn Dropped A Huge Wonder Woman Update, And It's Part Of A Larger Plan

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. When it was first announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran were taking over DC Films, and that an entirely new DC Universe would launch from that, fans had a lot of questions. While it soon became clear we would get a new Superman and a new Batman, the future of other major DC characters was a lot less clear, most notably, Wonder Woman. It seems that's really starting to change, though. The first Wonder Woman movie starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins was one of DC's biggest hits in the previous franchise, and yet, the original unveiling of James Gunn's first chapter of the DCU had no specific path forward for the Amazonian. In a recent conversation with EW, however, Gunn confirms that not only is a new Wonder Woman movie planned, it's currently in development. Gunn said... We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now. Considering Wonder Woman's popularity and previous success, it was a bit surprising that she hadn't been mentioned in the first batch of upcoming DC movies. Fans will now certainly have a lot of questions about what the plan is for this new movie, but they'll surely be happy to hear that it's happening. While the movie is apparently being written, Gunn does not mention who is actually penning it. This isn't unusual, of course. For instance, it's known that a DCU Batman movie is also being written, and a writer for that film hasn't been revealed either. As for the bigger plan aspect of this, the movie isn't the only piece of the new DCU connected to Wonder Woman. Gunn confirmed that the previously announced Wonder Woman-adjacent project, Paradise Lost, a prequel series set on the island of Thymascira, WW's home, but set long before her time, was still in development. Gunn called the series "slow-moving" but assured that it is still moving forward. Originally, with the prequel series announced without a directWonder Woman project, it seemed the series was likely designed to stand alone. With a movie now confirmed to be in development, one wonders if there may now be more direct connections between the two pieces of the franchise. When it comes to the film, the next big question, of course, will be just who is going to play Wonder Woman. Gunn made it clear that decision has not been made. He has previously said casting isn't considered until a script is finished. Casting somebody new in the role would seem to be the most likely scenario but, as some actors from the previous DC franchise are set to return in the new one, the return of Gal Gadot cannot be entirely discounted. There were plans for a Wonder Woman 3 starring Gadot before the franchise reboot took place. For a while, there have been conflicting reports regarding who ultimately walked away from the project first. Nevertheless, I'm excited that James Gunn and co. are moving full steam ahead in order to craft a new version of the Amazonian warrior for the DCU.

Nathan Fillion Talks About How The DCU Creative Team Decided On Green Lantern's Hairstyle, And Explains Why He Was Always ‘Team Bowl Cut'

After voicing Hal Jordan in various direct-to-video animated DC movies, including those within the DC Animated Movie Universe timeline, Nathan Fillion will soon be seen bringing another Green Lantern life. The Castle actor is appearing in James Gunn's Superman as Guy Gardner, who was the second human to become a member of the Green Lantern Corps in the comics. Guy is also known for his brash personality and occasionally sporting a distinctive hairstyle. Regarding the latter, Fillion opened up about how the bowl cut was decided upon for the character's DCU depiction. Make no mistake, Fillion was very much 'Team Bowl Cut' when the upcoming DC movie was being put together. He stated this while on the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, saying the following about what it was like figuring out what kind of wig he'd be wearing on Superman: There was some talk about different hairstyles. There was some talk about some different types of things we were gonna go [with]. I was team bowl cut the whole way. It's canon, it's set. I said, 'If we don't do a bowl cut, we're gonna hear about it.' Although Guy Gardner has rocked other hairstyles in the comics, his bowl cut from the '80s, in particular from his time on the Justice League International, still stands out. So while it may not be the most fashionable look in the 2020s, Nathan Fillion was adamant that the bowl cut be selected, otherwise he feared that there'd be an outcry from fans. Evidently James Gunn, who also co-runs DC Studios, agreed with him, and thus another key DCU decision was made. When Nathan Fillion was asked if he considered growing out his hair, he explained that his current gig on The Rookie prevented him from doing that: Now, here's the thing. I have another job, with a boss who's kind enough to let me out for other projects. But I think he would draw the line [at] a bowl cut police officer. Yeah, I have to agree with him on that. It would be incredibly off-putting for John Nolan to suddenly start arresting criminals with a bowl cut on The Rookie, and a blonde one at that. The wig was a better call, and we'll be seeing plenty of it. After Superman's release, Fillion will reprise Guy Gardner alongside Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl and Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord in Peacemaker Season 2, which premieres August 21 on Max. After that, Fillion's Guy will be back for Lanterns, which is expected to arrive on HBO sometime in early 2026. Superman flies onto the 2025 movies schedule on July 11. However, you don't have to wait until then to dive into the DC Universe, as Creature Commandos Season 1 is streaming with a Max subscription.

Peacemaker Is Meeting Guy Gardner In Season 2 Of John Cena's DC Show, And Nathan Fillion Explained Why It Will Be A ‘Powder Keg' When They're Together

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. After watching the Peacemaker Season 2 trailer last week, I immediately found myself asking what's happened to Viola Davis' Amanda Waller since she's no longer in charge of A.R.G.U.S. I'd be lying, however, if I said I wasn't surprised to learn from the preview that Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl and Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord are appearing in this upcoming DC TV show following their debut in James Gunn's Superman. But as Fillion recently discussed, it's going to be a 'powder keg' when Guy and John Cena's Christopher Smith crossed paths. Fillion briefly discussed his second turn as Earth's bowl-cut Green Lantern while speaking with TVLine, confirming these two characters will definitely not be fans of one another when Peacemaker Season 2 starts airing on the 2025 TV schedule. As he put it: Yeah, it's clear from their relationship that the two of them do not get along. Not a fan of each other. I wouldn't call them both A-listers by any means, but I think they both consider themselves maybe in their hearts they should be A-listers. I think they have a lot to prove. I think they've got chips on their shoulders. And I think it's just a powder keg when they get together. As seen in the trailer, Peacemaker meets Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl and Maxwell Lord when he's trying out for the superhero team Lord has put together that also includes Edi Gathegi's Mister Terrific. Unfortunately for Mr. Smith, a faulty microphone results in him hearing the trio be unimpressed with his qualifications and other things not intended for his ears. Guy is seen laughing at the awkwardness the technical difficulty caused, and he's clearly not broken up about not having Peacemaker as his new teammate. Max: Plans start from $9.99 a monthDon't miss out on Peacemaker Season 2 when it premieres this summer. Sign up for a Max subscription and pay $9.99 a month for its With Ads plan, and with three tiers available. You can also prepay for a year and save up to 20%.View Deal From the way Nathan Fillion is talking, it sounds like we'll see Peacemaker and Guy Gardner together in more than just this one scene. That snippet of footage doesn't scream 'powder keg' to me, so I'm eager to see just how specifically these two brash personalities clash. Like Fillion pointed out, the irony is that Peacemaker and Guy are pretty similar to one another because they both believe they should be more highly thought of among their superhero peers. At least in Guy's case though, he's already on a superhero team, which I'm sure makes him think he's superior to Christopher Smith. Following our first encounter with Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner in Superman starting July 11, we'll see just how he and Christopher Smith butt heads when Peacemaker Season 2 premieres August 21 on Max. Fillion will also reprise his DCU character next year in HBO's Lanterns opposite Kyle Chandler's Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre's John Stewart.
