Adam Sandler says Netflix 'tried to intimidate me' as he teases next movie

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Adam Sandler was asked about his next project following the release of Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to his 1996 comedy classic, which arrived on Netflix today (Friday, July 25)
Adam Sandler has claimed that Netflix attempted to "intimidate" him, while dropping tantalising hints about his potential next project.

During a recent appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, the Hollywood heavyweight was grilled about his upcoming work following the debut of Happy Gilmore 2, the sequel to Adam's beloved 1996 comedy, which landed on Netflix on Friday, July 25.

This prompted the Big Daddy star to cryptically disclose that he'd recently faced off with Netflix executives, though Adam said he remained defiant when they attempted to "stare" him down.

Adam revealed: "I wish I knew right now, pal. I was just with Netflix brass; they were trying to stare me down and intimidate me, and I didn't let it happen."
He continued: "I said, 'You wait for this. Sandman's gonna tell you what's up soon enough. And who's Sandman?'I said, 'Me, me. C'mon, cut this s***."

Dan then disclosed that the Little Nicky actor "let it slip" about his next film during a dinner in New York, to which Adam acknowledged that "there's talk of it", and he's "gotta write these damn things."
He further resisted the questioning by redirecting attention to his latest release. When pressed, Adam told Dan "Don't," insisting that it was "Happy Gilmore 2 time."
In the original '90s fan-favourite comedy, the Hollywood funnyman portrayed Happy, a hockey player who discovers he possesses a natural gift for golf and subsequently enters the PGA Tour in a bid to raise the funds needed to save his grandmother's house.

The follow-up would prove to be brilliant news for fans. Indeed, one Reddit user posted on the site asking for Adam Sandler film recommendations ahead of its release.
They wrote: "Please let me know your favourite Adam Sandler films I can watch tonight. I watched Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore last night and loved it."

They continued: "Any suggestions, please—even if I've seen them. Not going to put a long list on here, just tell me your favourites so I can maybe put them on my list."
As the recommendations poured in, one particular film stood out among the fan favourites: the 2006 comedy fantasy picture, Click, tells the story of workaholic Michael Newman, portrayed by Adam.
He receives a universal remote control from Christopher Walken's character, Morty. However, this remote proves to be extraordinary, enabling him to pause, rewind, and fast-forward moments of his existence.
Although it wasn't well received by critics, one Reddit user described the film as "underrated," while another dubbed it a "fun and enjoyable movie" that "leaves you sobbing."
Alongside Click, other suggestions from enthusiasts included Uncut Gems, Spanglish, 50 First Dates, and Little Nicky, which features an appearance from the late Black Sabbath legend Ozzy Osbourne.

Netflix 'axe huge reality show after just one series as it's branded the most expensive flop in years'

Netflix have reportedly axed huge reality show Battle Camp after just one series. The celebrity challenge show made its debut on the streaming service back in April, however, it failed to make an impact with viewers and critics alike, reports The Sun. The programme was filmed in Mexico and featured a host of reality stars from shows including Too Hot to Handle, Love Is Blind and The Circle. However, it has not been given the green light for a second series due to a poor response from audiences and high costs, with the publication reporting that it's Netflix's 'most expensive flop in years.' A source said of the 10-part show: 'There were so many individuals taking part in the show, with 18 contestants in total. The fact that they all charged a fee to take part and that it was filmed on location, made it unusually costly. 'Plus the format — set in a camp which was purpose-built from scratch for the show — relied on multiple challenges, each costing big money to set up. It was an expense Netflix would have been happy to shoulder, except it didn't meet their expectations. 'The hope was that it would create the sense of there being a 'Netflix reality universe', but most people who watched it didn't think the show was out of this world.' Daily Mail have contacted Netflix for comment. Battle Camp's axe comes hot on the heels of another expensive to make celeb-based show, Celebrity Bear Hunt, also being cut after one series back in June. The programme, which was set in Costa Rica and was hosted by Holly Willoughby alongside Bear Grylls, will not return despite the star saying that he was hopeful it would. Sources close to the show which aired in February say that while the ratings did well it was expensive to make and Netflix are now planning to do more live events rather than pre-recorded shows. One told Daily Mail: 'Everyone was very proud of the show but when it came to it, it was just so expensive to make. 'You had to have a whole set in Costa Rica, loads of staff and loads of celebrities. The overheads were eyewatering.' It is understood that cheaper locations were looked at but nothing was appeared to be suitable. Wrestlers, directed by Greg Whitley, hit the streaming service back on 13 September 2023. Netflix's official synopsis reads: 'At a storied professional wrestling organization, new owners and a roster of stars strive to make an impact beyond the ring in this documentary series.' It stars professional wrestler Al Snow, 62, and those who are in The Ohio Valley Wrestling school. The docu-series aired a total of seven episodes and unfortunately it has been confirmed that it won't be coming back.

My Best Friend's Wedding 2: Celine Song to write sequel to hit comedy

A sequel to 1997 comedy My Best Friend's Wedding is in the works with Celine Song tapped to write the screenplay. According to Collider, the playwright turned writer-director, who broke out with Oscar-nominated drama Past Lives, has reportedly been hired by Sony as the film enters early development. News of the film recently circulated when one of its stars Dermot Mulroney teased that there is 'talk of a sequel' and that 'lawyers were talking' while promoting Netflix drama series The Hunting Wives. The original film starred Julia Roberts as a meddling food critic who decides to break up her best friend's wedding because of her feelings for him. It also starred Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett and made just under $300m at the global box office. Roberts has previously expressed interest in reprising the role. The actor was last seen on the big screen in romantic comedy Ticket to Paradise and this year will lead Luca Guadagnino's provocative thriller After the Hunt. She will then be seen in paranoid thriller Panic Carefully with Elizabeth Olsen. Song scored a best original screenplay Oscar nomination for Past Lives and recently followed it up with Materialists, a romantic comedy drama starring Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans. The Guardian's Adrian Horton called it 'as beguiling as it is frustrating' in a three-star review. She has also been attached to a HBO series about the world of e-sports. The sequel joins a number of other follow-ups to films from the 1990s. This month saw both the release of underperforming slasher reboot I Know What You Did Last Summer in cinemas and Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix, next month sees the launch of comedy sequel Freakier Friday, a TV series extension of Clueless is currently in development at Peacock and a seventh Scream film hits the big screen next year.

Sarah Jessica Parker in possible conflict of interest over Booker longlisted author

An apparent conflict of interest has emerged over the Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker's judging of this year's Booker prize. A production company run by the actor is reportedly in the process of developing a book written by Claire Adam, whose second novel, Love Forms, appears on this year's longlist, announced on Tuesday. Adam's debut novel, Golden Child, was published in the US in 2019 by SJP for Hogarth, the Penguin imprint for which Parker served as editorial director. It is being developed as a film by Parker's company Pretty Matches Productions and MA Productions. 'It is not uncommon for judges to have a connection to authors whose work has been submitted, so all judges have to declare any conflicts of interest at the outset,' said Gaby Wood, chief executive of the Booker Prize Foundation. 'As Sarah Jessica Parker published Claire Adam's first novel, Golden Child, under her US imprint SJP for Hogarth, she declared the potential conflict to ensure transparency and only gave her view on the book after the other judges had shared theirs. No book can go through if it is supported by one judge alone, and Love Forms has earned its place on the Booker prize 2025 longlist through the active support of other judges on the panel.' In an interview with the the Irish Times published in June, Adam said that the film option 'was bought by a small production company in LA (MA Productions), and we're all so thrilled that SJP's Pretty Matches Productions is on board as well. Film stuff moves slowly, there are a zillion obstacles, and her supporting the project is fantastic.' Pretty Matches Productions, founded in 2005, is also behind the Sex and the City sequel And Just Like That … and the HBO series Divorce, which Parker executive produced and starred in. In an interview with the Times in June, Adam said that Parker 'reads loads and so it was really fun to hang out with her. She's so lovely and sincere. She read the book cover to cover and got up at 5am to travel to meet me.' Golden Child is published in the UK by Faber, and in 2019 won the Desmond Elliott prize. In June 2023, Parker launched SJP Lit, in partnership with the independent publisher Zando, which has published titles including These Days by Lucy Caldwell and The Story of the Forest by Linda Grant. Parker also shares book recommendations on her Instagram account. Parker was announced as a judge of this year's Booker prize in December, with Wood saying at the time that she had 'enjoyed sharing book recommendations with Sarah Jessica, who has passionately supported contemporary fiction for many years'. The 2025 judging panel is chaired by Roddy Doyle, and Parker's co-judges are Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀, Kiley Reid and Chris Power. Adam was named as one of 13 longlisted authors, which include the former winner Kiran Desai, Tash Aw and David Szalay. The shortlist will be revealed on 23 September, with the winner announced on 10 November.
