Andhra Pradesh: Jagan accuses Naidu-led govt of using police to target political opponents

Hindustan Times5 hours ago

YSR Congress party president and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday accused the Telugu Desam Party-led (TDP) coalition government headed by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu of targeting political adversaries and trying to scare them by foisting false cases and sending them to jails.
Amid a tense atmosphere, Jagan embarked on a visit to Rentapalla village in faction-ridden Palnadu district with a huge convoy of vehicles and accompanied by thousands of party workers, despite stringent police restrictions, to call on the family of Korlakunta Nagamalleshwara Rao, a YSRCP deputy sarpanch of the village, who died by suicide on June 11, 2024, allegedly due to harassment by TDP leaders.
Speaking to reporters after consoling the family members of Nagamalleswara Rao and unveiling his statue in the village, Jagan said Naidu had been using the police to settle political scores. Narrating the sequence of events that led to the suicide of Nagamalleswara Rao, the YSRCP chief alleged that the TDP and Jana Sena Party workers had filed false cases against him, driving him to take the extreme step.
'Nagamalleswara Rao was picked up by police one day before the counting and was threatened, insulted and beaten up. When the results were declared on June 4, he was again summoned to the station and warned. Unable to bear the humiliation, he went to his father Venkatesh's place in Guntur and consumed pesticide. He was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,' Jagan said.
Stating that Nagamalleshwar Rao stood as an example of police atrocities, the YSRCP chief warned that all the erring officials would have to pay a heavy price for misuse of power once the YSRCP bounced back to power after four years.
'The Naidu government has completely ignored development and welfare, and is focusing on implementing a 'Red Book Constitution' to unleash a reign of terror against the political opponents,' he alleged.
Reacting strongly to Jagan's allegations, senior TDP leader and state irrigation minister Nimmala Ramanaidu said YSRCP deputy sarpanch Nagamalleshwara Rao had committed suicide two days before the TDP-led coalition assumed charge on June 13 last year. 'Linking his death to the new government is nothing but foolishness,' he said.
He accused Jagan of consistently trying to disrupt peace and law and order in the state and damaging its brand image. He said that during the YSRCP's five-year rule, the state had witnessed only vendettas, misgovernance, false cases, and harassment. 'The coalition government is working to free the people from such misrule and is progressing with notable achievements in just one year,' he said.
Ramanaidu said Nagamalleshwar Rao died by suicide due to losses incurred by betting on the election results. 'It is strange that Jagan chose to call on his family a year after his death,' he added.
The minister pointed out that the police had denied Jagan permission for the visit, but he went ahead anyway, with his followers creating a war-like environment by playing drums, whistles, dancing, garlands, and sloganeering.
'Condolence visits are meant to be sombre and respectful. But Jagan's conduct was in stark contrast — even displaying provocative banners with threats. This is not condolence. This is incitement to violence,' Ramanaidu added.

Committee says no to funds for wall at SGPGIMS nursery school provisionally handed over to NGO

A committee has rejected the move to spend a proposed ₹48 lakh on carrying out repairs and raising a boundary wall at the three-decade-old nursery school on the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) campus. The rejection came at a meeting of the recommendatory committee led by additional director Kritika Sharma on Tuesday. Despite the proposal being turned down, people familiar with the matter claimed minor works like painting and internal repairs have already been carried out, raising concerns about procedural integrity and fund utilisation. The school has already been provisionally handed over to the Amethi based NGO Rajiv Smriti Shiksha Evam Seva Sansthan, named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Though the NGO has no known experience in early childhood education, it has been given the green light to begin groundwork for registration, infrastructure, and staffing ahead of the academic session. The PGI governing body had earlier declined to run the nursery school, citing its unwillingness to spend institutional funds on a non-core activity. Yet, barely weeks after the provisional handover, the administration was ready to invest public resources in upgrading the nursery's infrastructure for the NGO's use, those in the know of things claimed. 'This double standard is hard to ignore,' said an official familiar with the development. 'On one hand, the institute says it doesn't want to fund the school directly. On the other hand, it's dipping into its civil works budget to improve infrastructure for an NGO whose operational role hasn't even been finalized, thanks to the committee which refused to spend money,' an insider said. Critics are questioning the timing and choice of the NGO, which is based in Amethi and carries the name of a Congress former prime minister, under the BJP-led state government. The organisation's only known credential is a rural postgraduate college, with no documented experience in pre-primary education. When contacted, SGPGIMS joint director (administration), Jaideep Singh Ghuman confirmed that only interim, provisional approval had been granted. 'The building will continue to be maintained by PGI so that the fees can be kept in check. If the NGO is found underperforming, it will be removed from the project,' Ghuman said.

Row over Hindi: Marathi literary body opposes three-language formula

The Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal, an apex Marathi literary body, has opposed the Maharashtra government's decision to adopt a three-language formula for classes 1 to 5, claiming the New Education Policy does not recommend it. The Mahamandal's statement came on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) amid opposition from the Congress and Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena to an amended government order issued on Tuesday which said Hindi would "generally" be a third language for these classes. "It is clearly mentioned [in NEP] that a third language should be introduced from Class 6," a release from the Mahamandal said. It also questioned the need to teach a third language when many schools do not have enough teachers, and students of higher classes struggle to read Marathi books of Class 2 level. "Instead of improving the quality of education, attempts are being made to make a third language compulsory," it claimed. Though the state government has provided that students can opt for any other Indian language instead of Hindi, it would be practically impossible as teachers of these languages will have to be brought from a respective state which is very difficult, it said. The Mahamandal claimed its opposition to Hindi was for cultural reasons as Hindi's "invasion" of Marathi was increasing. It also asked why the Maharashtra government has adopted such a policy when Hindi is not compulsory from Class 1 in any other State. A government resolution (GR) issued on Tuesday said Hindi will "generally" be a third language, instead of being mandatory, but gave an option to opt out if 20 students per grade in a school express the desire to study any other Indian language. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said, "We had earlier made Hindi compulsory, but in the GR issued yesterday, that compulsion has been removed... students can now opt for any Indian language as a third language."

FIR against makers of Akshay Kumar's Kesari Chapter 2 for 'distorting' Bengal's freedom movement, TMC calls it 'insult'

West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress on Wednesday attacked the makers of Bollywood film Kesari Chapter 2, accusing them of distorting the history of the state's contribution to India's freedom struggle and insulting Bengali revolutionaries. An FIR has been filed against seven producers of Kesari Chapter 2 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at the Bidhannagar South police station. The controversy erupted over a scene in the movie that allegedly misrepresents key freedom fighters from Bengal — notably the iconic Bengali revolutionaries Khudiram Bose and Barindra Kumar Ghosh. According to the TMC, the film refers to Khudiram Bose as 'Khudiram Singh' and presents Barindra Kumar Ghosh as 'Birendra Kumar' from Amritsar. Calling it a 'deliberate distortion of history' and a 'deep insult to Bengal,' senior TMC leaders Kunal Ghosh and Arup Chakraborty addressed a press conference at the party headquarters, condemning the portrayal. Ghosh said, 'The names of Bengali revolutionaries who sacrificed their lives for India's freedom were being distorted. This is not just a mistake — this is a conspiracy to erase Bengal's role in the freedom movement. How did such a film get a censor certificate?' West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, without naming the movie, also slammed the filmmakers charging them with trying to undermine the contributions of freedom fighters from Bengal, in collusion with the BJP. "There are attempts to undermine the role played by the Bengali revolutionaries during the independence struggle. We condemn this. The BJP has been targeting Bengal and our cultural heritage," she said. The TMC alleged that the Centre's BJP-led government has repeatedly attempted to undermine Bengal's history and cultural identity. 'This is not the first time. The central government has often played games with Bengal's legacy and dignity. But this time, the limit has been crossed,' claimed Ghosh. The film, directed by Karan Singh Tyagi and based on the book The Case That Shook the Empire by Raghu Palat and Pushpa Palat, allegedly altered the identities of multiple historical figures. Actor Akshay Kumar, R. Madhavan, and Ananya Panday are among the film's cast. Apart from Khudiram Bose and Barindra Kumar Ghosh, the film is also said to misrepresent Hemchandra Kanungo, the revolutionary who trained the young men in bomb-making. The filmmakers allegedly replaced his character with a fictional figure named Kripal Singh, Ghosh claimed. TMC leaders have demanded immediate action from the Centre and questioned the role of the censor board. 'Why didn't the censor board flag these historical distortions? Who allowed such a film to pass certification?' they asked. The BJP, however, claimed that the TMC is trying to make an issue out of a non-issue. "At times in feature films, we have seen the names of characters have been changed. So, how is the BJP related to all of this? We are all aware how much honour the TMC has shown to our freedom fighters," BJP MP Samik Bhattacharya said. Noted Bengali actor Ritwick Chakraborty also criticised the filmmakers for not giving due attention to facts and details. "I don't know whether I should call it a bad research team or a poor screenplay. It is quite obvious that attempts were made to undermine the role of Bengali revolutionaries," Chakraborty said. A section of Bengali viewers has also taken to social media to express anger and demand accountability.
