Charles Bassey wants to play for the Boston Celtics

USA Today04-08-2025
Former San Antonio Spurs big man Charles Bassey wants to play for the Boston Celtics. But is the interest mutual, or is the lack of a camp invite for the Sin City Celtics center standout more a product of the need for cap management on a Boston roster right up against the edge of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA)'s second apron?
The Celtics could of course sign Bassey right now with their roster spot vacated by the move that got them under the second apron -- waiving 2025 NBA G League Most Valuable Player JD Davison. But doing so would theoretically put them right back over said second apron, negating the point of having made the move to part ways with Davison in the first place. Could another move to clear salary and open up some cap to bring on Bassey be in the works, or is Boston focused on other things at this point in the 2025 offseason?
The hosts of the CLNS Media "How Bout Them Celtics!" podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took some time on a recent episode of their show to talk it over. Check it out below!

Can the Boston Celtics unlock the potential of two way wing RJ Luis Jr.?

Can the Boston Celtics unlock the potential of two way wing RJ Luis Jr.? Luis came to the Celtics in an unusual trade that saw Boston deal vet forward Georges Niang into the cap space of the Utah Jazz with two second round draft picks to sweeten the deal, getting a traded player exception for Niang's salary slot and the two way contract of Luis in return. While the cap savings that generated for the Celtics was the leading news at the moment for most people following the team, Luis Jr. was not just a random throw-in to make the deal legal. Boston's front office evidently is a fan of Luis Jr., and hopes to develop him as one of the team's three two way players. The man behind the "Nik NBA" YouTube channel put together a clip of his play with an eye to how the Celtics could develop the former St. John's star at the NBA level. Check it out below! NBA approves record $6.1 billion sale of Boston Celtics to mogul

The NBA on Wednesday unanimously approved the sale of the Boston Celtics to a group led by private equity mogul Bill Chisholm, a deal that values the franchise at $6.1 billion. The league said the transaction is expected to close shortly. When it does, Chisholm will take ownership of at least 51% of the team, with full control coming by 2028 at a price that could bring the total value to $7.3 billion. That's the largest price ever paid for an American professional sports team, though Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter has agreed to buy a controlling share of the Lakers in a deal that would place the value of the entire franchise at $10 billion. It's not clear how much Walter would own; current owner Jeanie Buss is expected to retain at least 15% of the team. The previous record for a U.S. sports franchise was the $6.05 billion paid for the NFL's Washington Commanders in 2023. The record price for an NBA team was the $4 billion mortgage firm owner Mat Ishbia paid for the Phoenix Suns in 2023. A Massachusetts native and graduate of Dartmouth College and Penn's Wharton School of business, Chisholm is the managing partner of California-based Symphony Technology Group. The new ownership group also includes Boston businessmen Rob Hale, who is a current Celtics shareholder, and Bruce Beal Jr. Wyc Grousbeck led the ownership group that bought the team in 2002 for $360 million and presided over NBA championships in 2008 and '24. The franchise's 18 NBA titles is a record. Chisholm outbid at least two other groups, one led by previous Celtics minority partner Steve Pagliuca. Pagliuca has since announced plans to but the WNBA's Connecticut Sun for $325 million and move them to Boston, but the women's league has balked at the deal.

Promising Patriots Rookie Placed On Injured Reserve Following Preseason Opener

The Patriots' preseason opener on Friday night could not have gone much better. The team looked cohesive and was firing on all cylinders, and as a result, walked away with a dominant 48-18 win over the Commanders. It's hard to find much to be negative about from the performance, but there is a disappointing injury to discuss. Talented undrafted free agent running back Lan Larison suffered a lower-body injury in the opener, and went to the locker room late in the fourth quarter after running in a two-yard score. Larison ended his preseason debut with 35 yards and one score on seven carries. The running back also caught two passes for nine yards. Now, Boston Herald's Doug Kyed is reporting that the Patriots have placed Larison on injured reserve, which means he will have to miss the entire 2025 season. In a corresponding move, the team added running back Deneric Prince. It's a devastating blow for Larison, who had a real shot at making the roster as the fourth running back. The UC Davis product received a $175,000 signing bonus from the Patriots this offseason, which is a much larger amount than most undrafted free agents get. The speedy running back backed up that payday this summer, too. Larison frequently caught eyes at camp and even earned some comparisons to former Patriot greats Danny Woodhead and Rex Burkhead. With fullback Brock Lampe going on injured reserve earlier this summer, it seemed like Larison was the favorite to earn the last running back spot. Instead, Larison will likely have to wait until next summer to impress again, and the Patriots will see if Prince can impress in his place. Prince played in two games for the Chiefs in 2023, and has since spent time in the UFL with the Memphis Showboats.
