Centre to focus on cyber preparedness of cities
The cyber attacks during 'Operation Sindoor' have brought the government's focus on cyber preparedness of Indian cities. The ministry of housing and urban affairs will hold a two-day brainstorming session with states next week in this regard, people aware of the matter told ET. The aim of the meeting will be to gauge whether cities are equipped to handle cyber attacks, how technological interventions and projects planned in 100 smart cities can help states in handling cyber terrorism, and whether the special purpose vehicles (SPVs) in cities could be repurposed to handle current urban governance and challenges, the people cited earlier said. For the first time since the beginning of the third term of the BJP-led NDA government, a meeting of urban development ministers will be held by Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar on July 17 to gauge the progress of flagship missions, including Swachh Bharat Mission, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and AMRUT. The conference will focus on financing of urban governance projects, challenges facing the state governments in urban development, making cities garbage-free, transport services and water security for cities. According to the sources, the main focus will be 'Making Cities Cyber Secure' on the second day of the programme. Live Events 'This is an emergency of sorts facing our cities. We need to equip them to ward off cyber attacks. This part will be anchored by ministry of electronics and information and technology and the home ministry,' a senior official, who did not wish to be named, told ET. The Smart Cities Mission , which has been wrapped up formally by the government, had seen technological interventions in 100 cities. All smart cities had established hi-tech command and control centres and several urban governance functions are being coordinated through these centres. 'These are nerve centres of a city. They are susceptible to cyber attacks but can also be used as centres to handle cyber terrorism. This is what the Centre's focus is – to equip them to handle such attacks,' the official said. The Intelligence Bureau will be conducting a training programme on 'Threat Landscape for cities' to brief the smart cities on what threats they could face. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) will help cities understand what cyber measures they could take to protect their installations. The Indian Crime Coordination Centre will brief the cities on measures to undertake to arrest cyber attacks. Similarly, the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre will be involved in the training programme of smart cities, the official cited earlier said. The government will also help smart cities in repurposing special purpose vehicles (SPVs) established in all cities to spearhead the Smart Cities Mission. 'The mission period may have ended but the SPVs have gathered expertise in handling big infrastructure projects. This can be channelised into handling projects even now. SPVs need to be repurposed and this is what the cities will do,' said the official.

Nitish promises 1 cr jobs, skill varsity
PATNA: Ahead of Bihar assembly elections, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday promised one crore government jobs employment opportunities for the youth, and setting up a skill university, to be named after former CM and socialist leader Karpoori Thakur, in the next five years. Assembly polls in Bihar are to be held in October-November and NDA allies have already declared that the election would be contested under Nitish's leadership. Nitish's announcement for one crore jobs and employment opportunities came barely days after state cabinet approved a proposal to set up Bihar Youth Commission, apparently to target young voters. 'It has been our vision to ensure that more and more youths in the state receive government jobs and employment opportunities. Between 2005 and 2020, over eight lakh youths in the state were provided with government jobs. We resolved to provide government jobs to 10 lakh youth and employment to 10 lakh people in 2020 under the good governance programme, 'Saat Nischay-2'. Later, this target was increased to provide jobs to 12 lakh youths and employment to 38 lakh people by August 2025, setting a total target of 50 lakh jobs/employment opportunities,' Nitish wrote on 'X'. 'The target of providing government jobs/employment to over 50 lakh youth will certainly be achieved. In this context, for the next five years (2025 to 2030), we are setting a target to double the goal fixed for 2020-2025 by providing government jobs and employment opportunities to one crore youths,' he said. 'To achieve this, new job and employment opportunities will also be created in the private sector, particularly in industrial areas. For this purpose, a high-level committee is being constituted. Currently, the youth of the state are being provided with skill development training to connect them with self-employment opportunities under the Saat Nischay programme,' the CM added.

Expose TDP's betrayals to public, Botcha tells cadre
Vizianagaram: Botcha Satyanarayana, Opposition leader in Legislative Council, launched a strong attack on Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and the coalition government, branding them as 'masters of deception', who failed to fulfill electoral promises. Speaking at the constituency-level meeting held here on Sunday, Botcha blamed that Chandrababu Naidu has repeatedly deceived public by not implementing even a single promise from the party's election manifesto. 'As the main opposition, it is now our responsibility to go to the people and fight to ensure that those promises are fulfilled,' he added. He questioned the government for not implementing 'Super Six' welfare programmes, asking, 'Isn't it cheating the public?' He demanded clarity on the status of promises like free bus travel for women, Rs 15,000 assistance to women, and ₹3,000 unemployment dole. He further criticised both Chandrababu Naidu and Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan for issuing sworn affidavits during the elections, only to betray the trust of the public. 'That is why we must take this campaign to the people under the slogan 'Babu Surety – Betrayal Guarantee,'' he said. Botcha urged YSRCP cadre to organise awareness meetings in every village and ward to expose the failures of the coalition government. District YSRCP president Majji Srinivasa Rao said that YSRCP cadre should put untired efforts to fight with TDP and work for the public. He advised them to don't scare of false cases imposing by the TDP leaders.
