NCW takes cognisance of bride's suicide, seeks report in 72 hours

The National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognisance of a media report regarding the suicide of a newly-wed woman in Tamil Nadu, allegedly due to dowry harassment. The Commission demanded urgent action and accountability from the authorities.
NCW Chairperson, Vijaya Rahatkar, wrote to the Director General of Police (DGP), Tamil Nadu, asking for a prompt and fair investigation under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
In an official statement, the Commission said, "Such incidents are a grave violation of women's rights and demand urgent, exemplary action."
The NCW also directed the Tamil Nadu Police to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) within 72 hours.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
Meanwhile in a separate case, NCW on Saturday took suo moto cognisance regarding the alleged sexual harassment of an intern at IIT Madras campus, urging Tamil Nadu's Director General of Police for a fair and time-bound investigation and directing the authorities to ensure that psychological support is given to the victim.
The accused, Roushan Kumar (22), was arrested by Chennai police on June 27 for allegedly harassing the woman by using a stick and pulling her hair, according to officials.
Releasing a statement on X (formerly Twitter), NCW said, "National Commission for Women has taken suo moto cognisance of a media report regarding the sexual harassment of a 20-year-old woman intern at IIT-Madras by a food court employee on campus."
Calling for a fair and time-bound investigation along with ensuring psychological support to the victim, the statement added, "Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the DGP, Tamil Nadu, calling for a fair and time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS, 2023. NCW has also directed the authorities to ensure it."
All India Students' Federation also announced a protest, calling for ensuring women safety in the campus.
According to officials, on the night of June 26, around 9.20 PM, the accused used a stick and pulled the woman's hair, according to the complainant. The accused is working in the campus's Isthara food court. Based on the complaint and evidence collected, the accused was arrested, officials said.

Two persons were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly using pigeons strapped with red and green lights to spread false rumours of drone sightings in the district, a senior official said. Panic had gripped several villages across western Uttar Pradesh in recent days due to reports of drone sightings and many residents were keeping night vigil out of fear for their safety, according to police. Two individuals, identified as Shoeb and Sakib, were arrested after the police investigated complaints from villagers about mysterious flying objects with lights in the night sky that they suspected to be drones, they said. "During the investigation, the police recovered two pigeons, a cage, and red and green LED lights from the accused. They confessed to tying the lights to the pigeons' legs and releasing them at night so that the people assumed that they were seeing drones from a distance," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjay Kumar said. The gang was operating in Jatwara village under Kakroli police station limits, the SSP said. An FIR has been lodged against them under the relevant section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). SSP Kumar announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for the police team involved in cracking the case.

Court orders FIR against cop for assault on court chowkidar in Mohali
1 2 Mohali: A local court has ordered the registration of an FIR against Inspector Jashanpreet Singh for allegedly assaulting a court employee inside the Mohali court complex earlier this month during the production of Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia . The court observed that cognisable and non-compoundable offences were committed against a public servant on duty and directed the SSP, Mohali, to ensure necessary legal action is taken. Inspector Jashanpreet was posted as SHO Dhakoli during the incident and was shifted to police lines a day after. The order was passed in connection with a complaint filed by Pawan Kumar, reader to Civil Judge (Senior Division)-cum-Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Anish Goyal, who reported the incident that took place on July 6. The court directed the SHO of Sohana Police Station to register an FIR under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 132 (assaulting or using criminal force to deter a public servant from duty), 221 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of duty), and 304 (snatching) of the BNS, along with any other applicable sections revealed during investigation. When the chowkidar requested the Inspector to obtain permission from judicial authorities before opening the gate, the Inspector reportedly snatched the keys from him and physically pushed him. Later in the day, Baljeet Singh informed Judge Anish Goyal that he was assaulted with 2–3 fist blows by the Inspector. The reader, Pawan Kumar, subsequently filed the complaint, which was forwarded to the police for inquiry. The inquiry, conducted by the SHO of Sohana Police Station and concurred with by DSP City II, concluded that no offence was made out, citing that the matter was "mutually settled" and that both parties were public servants under pressure in a tense environment. However, the court disagreed with this conclusion. The judge ruled that the offences alleged are non-compoundable and cannot be dismissed merely because the victim — a govt employee — later reached a compromise. "The offence is deemed to be committed against the State, and merely at the whims and fancies of the victim, the criminal justice system would not come to a halt," the court stated. Gunshots fired at Faridabad house over old rivalry
Gurgaon: Two individuals fired multiple gunshots at a house in Tilpat village, Faridabad, around midnight on Tuesday, over a longstanding rivalry. Palla police have booked Nitin Rohatkiya along with an unidentified person for the incident. According to police, Rohatkiya and his accomplices arrived at the house intending to kill or intimidate Om Prakash. They initially stopped near the house, moved ahead, but returned to discharge their firearms. After spotting Prakash and an initial malfunction of the firearms, the accused in yellow attire fired multiple shots, none of which struck the target. The accused subsequently fled the scene. Neighbours, alerted by the gunshots, gathered and reported to the police, sharing the CCTV footage with the police. Crime branch and forensic teams arrived at the location and recovered two bullet shells. Speaking to the media, Prakash stated that Rohatkiya was involved in several such crimes in the area and criticised the police for insufficient action against him. "He has over two dozen criminal cases and was jailed four times but he is roaming freely," he said. A neighbour, Jai Bhagwan Sharma, expressed serious concerns about residents' safety in the area. "We were sleeping while my father watched the suspects through the CCTV. After they fired, he raised an alarm following which we got out of the house but the accused escaped. This is not his first such act. We all are concerned about our safety in such a lawless situation," he said. Sub inspector Yashpal, Faridabad police spokesperson, stated that the accused were booked under Section 109 of BNS for attempted murder and under relevant sections of the Arms Act. He added that the exact motive behind the firing would be determined after the accused are apprehended.
