The brass markers of a monument honoring World War II guerillas in Barangay Alabang, Muntinlupa City were found stolen.
The suspects were arrested through the efforts of the police and barangay officials, and will face charges, according to a report by Mao dela Cruz on Super Radyo dzBB on Sunday.
Muntinlupa City Mayor Ruffy Biazon said he went to the Philippine National Police (PNP) station at Alabang Junction where the suspects were brought for investigation.
The suspects revealed that they sold the brass markers to a certain junk shop.
The junk shop owner will also face charges for violation of the Anti-Fencing Law.
Biazon however said the brass markers may have already been melted.

Earlier, the local government unit offered a P100,000 reward to anyone who can give information that would lead to the arrest of the suspects in the theft of the brass markers.
The monument is located at the plaza of Barangay Alabang. Every February 4, the city recognizes the sacrifice and heroism of the guerillas during World War II.
"Sa plakeng ninakaw na nakakabit dito nakalista ang pangalan ng mga beteranong gerilya na lumaban para sa kalayaan ng mga Muntinlupeño," Biazon said in a post on Facebook.

SC upholds Comelec ruling on Quezon candidate disqualification

According to a statement, the SC ruled that the findings of the poll body were supported by substantial evidence. Seeking to remove doubts about the legality of the Commission on Elections' (Comelec) ruling, the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday announced that it upheld the disqualification of Matt Erwin Florido as representative of Quezon Province due to alleged vote buying. According to a statement, the SC ruled that the findings of the poll body were supported by substantial evidence. This stemmed from a complaint filed by registered voters and residents of Buenavista, alleging that Florido's camp distributed P1,000 bills along with free food, shirts, and transportation during a gathering on April 5 and 6. In his petition with the SC, Florido said that Comelec committed grave abuse of discretion and argued that the event was only for his campaign volunteers. The SC, however, noted that the event was not exclusive to campaign staff. It said that the event was clearly intended to gain electoral support. Aside from this, the SC said the distribution of cash and other items were not properly documented or liquidated. 'The SC emphasized that the lack of receipts, logbooks, or other records indicated that the funds were used to influence voters — constituting vote-buying under the Omnibus Election Code,' it said in a statement. According to the High Court, Florido's presence at the event also showed his knowledge and implied his approval. 'Although Florido ultimately lost in the 2025 elections, the SC still resolved the case to remove any doubts about the legality of the COMELEC's decision,' it said. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

Crime rate down 7.75% over 10-month period — PNP chief Torre

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said Tuesday the country's crime rate went down 7.75% from August 2024 to June 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year. In his speech during the 124th Police Service Anniversary celebration at Camp Crame attended by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., Torre said the number of crime incidents decreased from 192,677 to 177,735. "Crime incidents dropped by 7.75% with a total of 177,735 incidents from August 2024 to June 2025 compared to 192,677 from the same period of previous year," Torre said. "This significant decline clearly reflects the effectiveness of our intensified anti-criminality operations, especially our increased police presence across the country," he added. In the drive against illegal drugs, Torre said a total of 153,609 operations have been conducted from July 1, 2022 to August 10, 2025. Anti-drug operations resulted in 190,568 arrests and confiscation of contraband worth some P54.6 billion, according to Torre. "This represents a 258% increase compared to the same period of 2016 to 2019. A testament to our bloodless campaign that decisively targets both high-value and street-level offenders," Torre said. Torre said the PNP is also seeking to address cyber crimes, human trafficking, kidnapping, and even fake news. With regard to internal cleansing, Torre said that over the past year, a total of 3,413 members of its personnel were sanctioned. Under the PNP's newly implemented Five-Minute Response Policy, Torre said police responded to 94% of the 3,574 emergency calls within five minutes from June 2 to August 10. "As we mark our 124th year, the question before us is not what have we done? But what more can we do?" Torre said. "As the Chief of the Philippine National Police, I call on every officer and personnel to continue embodying the true spirit of public service. Let us be the police force that people not only respect but truly trust," he added. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
