Here's The Biggest New Show Of 2025 No One Is Talking About

Forbes08-04-2025

Mobland
I've noticed a sharp disconnect between many media critics and what people are actually watching around the streaming internet. Sometimes they overlap, like with endless thinkpieces on Netflix's Adolescence or HBO's White Lotus. Other times, things seem to be flying completely under the radar.
This appears to be the case with what is arguably the biggest new series of 2025, and I believe it's being ignored in part because of where it's airing, Paramount Plus, which is often not given the space it deserves by the media. See also big, somewhat ignored hits like 1923 and Landman. The new show we're talking about here is Mobland. This is the synopsis:
'The Harrigans, a London crime family, find themselves in a battle with the Stevensons that could end empires and their lives. Harry Da Souza is called upon by the Harrigans to be their "fixer" and to protect their family.'
The cast is exceptional. It stars everyone's favorite James Bond (sorry Connery and Craig) Pierce Brosnan, recently-departed Venom (with a ton of other great films under his belt) Tom Hardy, House of the Dragon standout and acting legend Paddy Considine and finally, Oscar-winner Helen Mirren as the matriarch of the central crime family. The entire thing is directed by Guy Ritchie of Snatch, Lock Stock, Sherlock Holmes, The Man from UNCLE, The Gentlemen, The Covenant and many other shows and films. Just an incredible pedigree for the series.
Mobland
And people are watching. Mobland broke a global launch record for Paramount Global with 2.2 million viewers for the first episode. It's also on the service's all-time list now alongside 1923 and Landman.
The series has gotten good reviews. A 79% critic score, verified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and a somewhat lower, but still positive audience score of 68%. Keep in mind massive hits on Paramount like 1923 have a 51% audience score and Landman has a close to identical 79% critic and 62% audience score. You don't need dual 100%s to find success in this business, only a good concept and great cast, which both those other shows have as well. Paramount has proven great at grabbing high profile stars as of late, with Harrison Ford and Billy Bob Thornton leading those other two series, and now this amazing Mobland cast.
Mobland has only just gotten started with two episodes, and the 10 episode run (which you see increasingly infrequently in the streaming era) is going to be on all the way through June, not doing a Netflix binge style drop. Expect a lot more chatter as more and more people discover it. Albeit perhaps not too many critics, it seems.

BET Awards: Jamie Foxx Tearfully Thanks God for Giving Him a 'Second Chance' After Health Scare

Jamie Foxx got emotional while accepting the Ultimate Icon Award at the 2025 BET Awards on Monday night. The actor-comedian-singer struggled to hold back tears during his speech as he thanked God for giving him a 'second chance' following his health emergency in April 2023. He revealed in his Netflix special, Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…, that he had suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke. More from The Hollywood Reporter Jonathan Mayers, Concert Promoter and Bonnaroo Co-Founder, Dies at 51 Doechii Calls Out Trump's "Ruthless Attacks" Amid L.A. Protests in BET Speech: "What Type of Government Is That?" Thank You, Sly Stone 'I cannot even begin to express the love that I feel from everybody out there,' Foxx began after accepting the award. 'I gotta be honest, when I saw the In Memoriam, I was like, man, it could have been me. I don't know why I went through what I went through, but I know my second chance, I'm not gonna turn down.' 'I have so much love to give. I told him [God], I said, man, just give me one more crack at this,' Foxx continued as his eyes filled with tears. 'I said, for whatever reason you put this on me, I promise I'm gonna do right. And I'm gonna do right in front of y'all 'cause I know a lot of times when we get on, we forget about where we come from. When I did my special, it was in front of Black people. Black people were the ones that said, man, we got you. Not to say that white people can't pray either. I know that sounds weird, but y'all know what I'm saying. It's like you guys held me down, and I don't want to make this whole speech about that, but you can't go through something like that and not testify.' The Oscar-winning actor also showed his appreciation for his daughters, Corinne and Anelise, for helping him through his tough recovery and making 'sure I was here.' Prior to his Netflix special, Foxx shared few details about an undisclosed medical complication in April 2023 that left him hospitalized. He then disappeared from the spotlight for six months to focus on recovery. Elsewhere during his speech, Foxx also thanked BET 'for this wonderful award.' He added, 'I say this all the time, thank you to Black people and the Black award, because this is what really counts. A lot of people think like the Oscars is the biggest thing, and we got to quit thinking like that. And that's coming from a person who won an Oscar, I was nominated twice, but the Icon Award is the most important award because it comes from us.' File Photo by Rune Hellestad/ UPI | License Photo June 12 (UPI) -- White Lotus actress Michelle Monaghan discussed what it was like filming a Tom Cruise kiss on her honeymoon when she stopped by The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon Wednesday. Monaghan, 49, shared the story after Fallon congratulated her on her upcoming 20th wedding anniversary to husband Peter White. The couple's wedding coincided with Monaghan's filming for Mission: Impossible III. "My husband's Australian, so we got married in Australia, actually and we didn't have time for a honeymoon because we had to start filming, I think, three days later, so we flew back to LA," she said. She recalled receiving her call sheet and seeing that her first day would require her to film "an intimate scene with Tom Cruise." "I was so nervous about it," Monaghan said. "I get up at 4 a.m., I dart out of the hotel, I forget my key, of course. And I go to work, and I proceed to have the best day with Tom and J.J. Abrams, our director." When she arrived back at the hotel that evening, her husband said "brush your teeth and tell me all about it." "He looked at me and he grabbed my arms and he goes, 'How cool is it that you were making out with Tom Cruise on our honeymoon?'" she said. "... I married the right dude." Monaghan recently starred in Season 3 of The White Lotus. She portrayed actress Jaclyn, who was vacationing at a luxury resort in Thailand with longtime friends Laurie (Carrie Coon) and Kate (Leslie Bibb). ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Will End With a Fifth and Final Season

Paramount has confirmed that the U.S.S. Enterprise crew's journey is coming to an end with a truncated fifth season. The adventures of the Enterprise are coming to an end once more. With just over a month to go to the broadcast of its third season, Paramount has confirmed that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will end with its fifth season. The newly-confirmed fifth season will run for six episodes, down from Strange New Worlds' typical 10-episode seasons. No expected release window for the final season was confirmed, however the show's fourth season, already announced back in April 2024, is currently in production. 'From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honor what Star Trek has always stood for–boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,' executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman said in a joint statement provided via press release. 'We're deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who've boldly joined us on this journey–THANK YOU. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.' Strange New Worlds' conclusion follows a trend set in Star Trek's streaming renaissance by Discovery and Lower Decks before it, which also both ran for five seasons. But it also marks a turning point towards the end of that era: after the disastrous release of the Section 31 movie earlier this year, and the all-but-confirmed conclusion of Star Trek: Prodigy after its exodus to Netflix, with the confirmation of Strange New Worlds' end just one Star Trek series will remain active for now, the still-in-production Starfleet Academy (set in the 32nd century setting first explored in Discovery), which has already been renewed for a second season. Star Trek's future beyond it may lie in future series, but the only close-to-certain projects we currently know of are films. A new film exploring the foundational years of Starfleet is currently in the works from director Toby Haynes, while Patrick Stewart has openly discussed plans for a potential return to the role of Jean-Luc Picard in a new film, presumably set after the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard. Strange New Worlds returns for its third season on July 17, with a two-episode premiere. We'll bring you more on the future of Star Trek as and when we learn it.
