Miri District Police Chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation was carried out by a team from the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD Miri), comprising one senior police officer and seven personnel.
'During the operation, a total of 17 vehicles were inspected. Out of that number, 15 motorcycles were seized under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 after they were found to have been modified from their original structure and for further inspection.

Pedestrian in Miri dies on way home in suspected hit-and-run

Police photo shows the victim's covered body by the roadside. MIRI (Aug 7): A 33-year-old man was killed in a suspected hit-and-run while walking along Jalan Dato Sri Balan Seling here in the wee hours of today. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the incident happened around 2am when the victim and a co-worker were headed back to Krokop on foot after a round of drinks in the Permyjaya area. 'Initial investigations found that the co-worker had walked ahead of the victim, and only realised that the victim was nowhere to be seen when he reached the traffic light junction near a petrol station. 'He then doubled back and found the victim dead by the roadside,' said Mohd Farhan in a statement. He added the body was sent to Miri Hospital for a post-mortem, with police currently working on identifying the vehicle involved in the incident. The case, he said, is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or have relevant information, are urged to come forward to assist in the investigation by calling traffic investigating officer Insp Mohd Faizul Abdul Rahim on 014-8582582 or 085-430479, or heading to the nearest police station. Mohd Farhan also reminded those involved in road accidents to promptly file a police report. fatal hit and run miri pedestrian

Malaysia removes 500,000 illegal online content items since 2022

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 500,000 pieces of online content were removed by service providers between Jan 1, 2022, and Aug 1, 2025, for violating Malaysian laws. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching revealed the breakdown, with 321,012 items related to gambling and 119,273 linked to fraud. Another 43,585 pieces were obscene, while 35,420 involved bullying or sexual harassment, and 38,818 were fake content. The removals followed requests from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Teo said MCMC collaborates with agencies like PDRM, KPDN, and Bank Negara Malaysia to monitor harmful content. MCMC also provides technical support, including digital forensic analysis, to aid investigations. The ministry remains committed to ensuring a safe online environment for all Malaysians. Teo addressed concerns from Datuk Dr Richard Rapu regarding steps to curb harmful content like gambling and cyber fraud. MCMC launched a fact-checking portal, and introduced an AI chatbot (AIFA) in January 2025. The chatbot helps verify information quickly and combats false news more effectively. From Jan 1, 2025, social media platforms must obtain an ASP(C) licence under Act 588. This ensures service providers take responsibility for harmful content, especially involving children. MCMC also published a Code of Conduct for social media platforms to protect minors. The Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) launched in January focuses on cyberbullying and age restrictions. Teo urged platforms to act faster in removing fraudulent or harmful posts. Many fraudulent posts are only taken down after MCMC reports them, she noted. Without stricter advertising guidelines, fraudulent content continues to rise yearly. - Bernama

IGP: Stop uploading, sharing unverified information related to Sabah student Zara Qairina's death

Mohd Khalid said police have detected the spread of information and a child's pictures linked to the Zara Qairina case by irresponsible parties on social media. — Malay Mail photo KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 7): The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) is urging all parties to stop any action of uploading or sharing unverified information related to the death of Form 1 student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Inspector-general of police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said police have detected the spread of information and a child's pictures linked to the Zara Qairina case by irresponsible parties on social media. He stated that the shared information is inaccurate and has the potential to confuse the public, besides potentially affecting the ongoing investigation and hindering the process of justice for all involved. 'The entire investigation process for the case, including the post-mortem issue, is being conducted according to existing procedures and legal provisions, and all parties are advised to stop any action of uploading or sharing unverified information, including disclosing information related to the case investigation,' he said in a statement last night. Mohd Khalid said the act of disclosing information related to the case can be investigated under Section 15 of the Child Act 2001, which involves a prohibition on revealing the identity, address, school name, and pictures of the child involved, as well as Section 203A of the Penal Code for offenses related to the disclosure of information. 'The individuals involved can also be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of a network facility or network service. Adherence to the law is the basis of national peace and well-being. Any violation will be met with firm action in accordance with existing provisions,' he said. Zara Qairina, 13, was confirmed to have died at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on July 17. The student was taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar at 4 am on July 16.
