TAWAU: Polytechnic and Community Colleges (POLYCC) continue to play a crucial role as leaders in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Malaysia. Director of Politeknik Tawau Sabah (PTS) Mohd Sahran @ Awang Mohidin, said that TVET education is increasingly becoming the top choice for students who are more inclined towards practical and skills-based learning. He emphasised that this is because TVET fields offer strong job prospects immediately after graduation. 'POLYCC also offers affordable tuition fees of only RM200 per semester, including programmes available at PTS such as the Diploma in Tourism Management and Diploma in Recreational Tourism,' he said while officiating the three-day 'Generasi Aspirasi SMK Ulu Sapi, Beluran 2025' programme . The programme was held at PTS on May 2-4, which involved 84 students from the school. It was organised in collaboration with PTS and the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG) (Tawau Campus). Meanwhile, the Principal of SMK Ulu Sapi, Railen @ Maria Guang, said the programme met its objectives by fostering cooperation among the three institutions in providing early exposure to higher education opportunities for the students involved. 'It has, to some extent, provided motivation and a clearer understanding for students about their educational pathways after completing the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM),' she said. She added that the participating students were from Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (Stem) A and Humanities streams. The programme included educational and career motivation sessions, as well as briefings on admission into Polytechnics and Community Colleges. Participants also had the opportunity to experience both theoretical and practical learning sessions conducted entirely by lecturers and the Student Representative Council (JPP) of both institutions. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Agrobank allocates RM200 million for Agrofood Financing Fund 2025
Arthur (back) witnessing Tengku Ahmad (left) handing over the DPA 2025 to KPKM Business Development and Investment Division Secretary Khalid Ibrahim. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 1): Agrobank has earmarked RM200 million for its Agrofood Financing Fund (DPA) 2025 to support national food security and promote the long-term sustainability of Malaysia's agricultural and agrofood sectors. The fund provides financing facilities to farming communities engaged in agricultural and agrofood production activities — ranging from upstream to downstream — including related support services. The goal is to encourage the adoption of agrotechnology and enhance the resilience of the agrofood industry. Agrobank Chief Executive Officer Dato Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin said the bank, as the implementing agency, offers financing between RM50,000 and RM5 million to eligible agricultural entrepreneurs at a profit rate of just three percent per annum. 'The financing covers fixed capital needs such as asset purchases and development costs, as well as working capital,' he said. 'It also supports the entire agrofood value chain, including food production like planting, farming and fishing, along with processing, distribution, marketing, and food preparation services.' Tengku Ahmad said the initiative reinforces Agrobank's role as a development financial institution (DFI) committed to providing inclusive, sustainable and accessible financing to farming communities and agro-industry players. 'This effort is aligned with the government's aim to boost the competitiveness of the nation's agri-food sector,' he added. The handing over of the DPA 2025 was witnessed by Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup during a ceremony held at the Sabah International Convention Centre here today.

#SHOWBIZ: PTVM applauds government's creative economy focus in 13th Malaysia Plan
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Television Producers Association (PTVM) has commended the government's decision to prioritise the creative economy, also known as the orange economy, in the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for 2026–2030. This move, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is seen as a key step towards recognising the creative industry as a major driver of future economic growth, aligning with the principles of the Madani Economy. In a statement released today, PTVM president Datuk Jurey Latiff Rosli highlighted the importance of this recognition. "We value the acknowledgment of the creative industry's potential to boost national income, create high-value jobs, and generate export opportunities through commercial content and intellectual property (IP)," he said. Datuk Jurey added that PTVM particularly welcomes the emphasis in the 13MP on producing high-value, internationally marketable, and high-quality commercial content. He stressed that "local content must be seen as economic assets, not just entertainment." The association also supports the 13MP's focus on training, TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training), and skill-building, and confirmed its readiness to assist with inclusive, industry-based training programmes. While acknowledging the positive incentives for animation and matched funding, PTVM urged for similar support to be extended to other content types, including drama, documentaries, magazines, and digital content. PTVM also put forward several key proposals for the implementation of the plan. Transparency and Meritocracy: All the 13MP initiatives should be implemented transparently, based on merit, and with direct input from industry associations. Creative IP as an Asset: Creative IP should be formally recognised by financial institutions and included in asset ownership policies. Specialised Funding: A dedicated fund should be established to support the development of high-quality local content for global platforms like streaming services and international broadcasters. In conclusion, Datuk Jurey affirmed PTVM's commitment to working with the National Film Development Corporation (Finas), the Ministry of Communications, and other stakeholders. The goal is to ensure the successful rollout of the creative economy initiatives in the 13MP. He believes that "with strategic execution and government support, Malaysia can emerge as a regional creative content hub by 2030."
