Eddie Murphy who voiced Donkey in Shrek is finally getting his own spin-off film; everything to know

Hindustan Times29-07-2025
Donkey is finally getting his time in the spotlight, sans ogre. Eddie Murphy just revealed that everyone's favourite foot-in-mouth sidekick from Shrek is getting his own movie. In an interview with ScreenRant while promoting his film The Pickup, Murphy said, 'We're still doing Shrek...we're about two years into Shrek 5,' adding that he begins recording for the Donkey spinoff this September. The standalone film will be released three years from now. Eddie Murphy who voiced Donkey in Shrek
Following in the footsteps (paws?) of the successful Puss in Boots (2011) spinoffs, this Donkey-centric film promises a whole new adventure, this time focusing on his 'dragon wife' and their six adorable 'Dronkey' kids. 'Donkey's going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys,' Murphy shared, adding that the team has come up with a 'funny story.'
The film will delve deeper into Donkey's chaotic domestic life, building on his relationship with Dragon Elizabeth the Dragoness — first seen in Shrek as a fire-breathing villain turned unexpected lover. Fans have long speculated about the future of the Dronkeys, and this might be our first real glimpse into their wild family dynamic. Expect fire-breathing tantrums, donkey jokes, and a whole lot of heart.
Meanwhile, Shrek 5 is also underway and set to release on December 23, 2026. OG cast members Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz are back as Shrek and Fiona, and joining them is Zendaya, who will voice their teenage daughter Felicia. Between a royal teen ogre and a half-dragon family, the swamp is about to get very, very busy.

The Pickup review: Poor American version of Dhoom 3 with Eddie Murphy's brilliance

Russell Pierce (Eddie Murphy) and Travis Stolly (Pete Davidson) are truck drivers who get ambushed by dangerous criminals on a fateful day. What later unfolds is a treacherous game of deceit, emotional conflict, clashing personalities and fear. Murphy is once again back with his best comic timings in Tim Story's heist action-comedy - 'The Pickup'. Do his humorous one-liners and nuanced portrayal of a man stuck in a work-life balance keep the audience invested in the story? Has the talent of actors Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer and Eva Longoria been well-utilised with carved-out characters and well-crafted screenplay?advertisementThe very essence of any genre is not just honouring the theme but also living up to the human element and emotional availability of the main characters. Apart from Murphy's acting brilliance, the supporting cast on-board for 'The Pickup' does a decene job by surrendering to the director and screenwriters' vision. But is the involvement of actors enough to create a worthy cinematic experience? Despite the artistic finesse, 'The Pickup' somehow ends up being an American version of 'Dhoom 3' with a quirkier and Travis's association with Zoe (Palmer), who is hell-bent on committing a grave crime due to emotional baggage, is full of tried-and-tested tropes from formulaic Hindi cinema. The good-for-nothing underdog falling for the femme fatale with a grey shade is not a new narrative. However, it is not just the story and characters, but predictable dialogues and twists which often hamper the very soul of cinema and artistry. Not just Bollywood films, even regional cinema has had plenty of such heist-action-comedies where opposites attract amid a chaotic, roller-coaster of uncertain and unfavourable events. 'The Pickup' does have the scope for plenty of humour, but the film somehow fails to hold on to the engagement quotient. Tim's too much focus on the chase sequences, blast scenes, gun-fighting and hand-to-hand combat, diverted from the soul of 'The Pickup'. The film is supposed to be as funny as thrilling it is with the larger-than-life adventure shots. While it is good to have Murphy back in action, the lack of a soulful story makes a good actor confined to the director's vision. Even though Murphy gives it his best shot while Davison and Longoria try to match up to his acting abilities, the film is unable to resonate with the audiences. When a script lacks soul and the characters drift away from life, even talented actors are unable to shoulder a potentially-commercial entertainer. Too many subplots and imposed slapstick humour make 'The Pickup' too redundant to even qualify as a popcorn services, which are seen as an alternate medium other than theatrical releases, are often raved for content-driven storytelling. However, when a filmmaker massively relies on over-the-top action and lacks an in-depth emotional arc, the very essence of storytelling suffers. A story where the struggles, conflicts and closure of characters remain undefined or unconvincing, can never be entertaining. Murphy's artistry and potential are well-known to filmmakers. But if a talented actor ends up filling in for lazy writing and fatigued direction, the purpose of cinema loses its Pickup' does reflect on the efforts being put in by every actor. However, in the streaming race for quality content, the audiences are quick enough to point out any cinematic or technical errors. Cinema is not just a visually striking medium but a voice for human emotions. If a story fails to bring the sentiments or struggles on-screen effectively, the collaboration of writers, director and actors has somehow missed the though Murphy has immense potential as a versatile actor and is able to create an impactful chemistry with Longoria, the film turns out to be a missed opportunity. Actors Andrew Dice Clay, Marshawn Lynch, Jack Kesy, Lara Grice and Ismael Cruz Cordova do a commendable job irrespective of the flat craft a story related to any genre, the characters must reflect on life. Only a soulful screenplay can have an emotional connection with audiences, even if the film is a comedy. Writers Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows, despite all the attempts, fail to narrate an entertaining as well as emotionally engaging story.'The Pickup' is available for streaming on Prime Video.- Ends2 out of 5 stars.
