Martin Short shocked by Meryl Streep admission

Perth Now01-07-2025
Martin Short was stunned when Meryl Streep admitted she was nervous on her first day filming Only Murders in the Building.
The 75-year-old actor portrays Oliver Putnam in the series opposite the 76-year-old screen legend as his love interest Loretta Durkin and he was shocked to learn she was just as apprehensive about shooting their first scenes together in season three as he was.
Speaking on Sirius XM's Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, he said: "So, the first scene we shot in Only Murders was a scene where we're at the piano and we're kind of flirting a little bit.
"The first shot set up [panned over Meryl to me] so it's pressure on me.
"And then, we break down so that they can reverse the cameras and do her side,."
'We go into holding area and she just says, 'Okay, nerves to half.' And I go, 'Wait a second, I was nervous. You can't be nervous.' "
Martin previously insisted it was "coincidental" that the Devil Wears Prada star had joined Only Murders in the Building as his love interest amid speculation they are together in real life.
He told People magazine: "It's always interesting — show business relationships and spec.
"They already planned that I would have a theatrical experience and there would be a love interest.
"She just wanted to be on the show. She didn't know about [the love story]."
Co-creator John Hoffman has previously spoken of his delight at watching Martin and Meryl film together.
He told Decider: 'You know, it is one of the most unexpected turns but I remember thinking, like, 'God.' As I got to know Meryl, as I've known Marty and as I watched the two of them work together in season 3, I just — it was unbelievable.
"They just delighted in each other on screen, off screen in every way.'
Meryl even thanked John for giving her the opportunity to have a love interest in her 70s.
He said: 'I remember one night we were shooting on the ferry in Episode 5 of Season 3. We shot until about 2 in the morning on the most gorgeous night in Manhattan.
'I got off to gangplank there and Meryl was waiting and she had tears in her eyes and she said, 'I just had to wait here for you to get off the boat to say thank you.' And I was like, 'What?' and she said, 'I just got to play a scene I really thought that the likes of which I wouldn't have a chance to do. To play romantic scenes at this age with this band in this way, it's just the greatest thing ever.''

Logan Lerman hails 'talented and good-looking' co-star Brad Pitt

Logan Lerman thinks Brad Pitt is the "coolest-looking person" he's ever met. The 33-year-old actor first met Brad, 61, during his childhood, and he relished starring alongside him in Fury, the 2014 war film. Logan told Interview magazine: "I met Brad when I was a little kid as a fan at a restaurant. He was in full leather pants, leather button-up, just the coolest-looking person I'd ever seen in my life. Then we worked together and became friends. "It's nice when you meet people you admire and they are not fussy and particular. They just want to make something great. I've worked with some people, who shall remain nameless, that aren't like that." Logan has worked with some "obnoxious people" during his career - but he insists that Brad was friendly and professional. The movie star said: "I will not [name them], but wouldn't it be fun if I just started bashing all the obnoxious people I've worked with? But Brad was so giving." Logan recalled being blown away by Brad's talent and good looks, too. He added: "You're just like, 'What the hell?' And he's humble." Meanwhile, Logan recently joined the cast of Only Murders in the Building and the actor admitted that he found the show's set to be "oddly fun". Logan stars in season five of the hit TV show, and the actor revealed that he relished the experience of working with the likes of Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. Speaking to People, he explained: "It's an oddly fun set to be on." The actor admitted that "sometimes, sets are not that enjoyable". However, he hailed the Only Murders set for being "a really good one". He shared: "It's so great. That's a really fun show to work on. I had a really good time." Despite this, Logan is determined to remain tight-lipped about his on-screen character. The actor doesn't want to ruin any surprises for fans of the murder mystery show. He said: "I don't want to ruin anything, but I'm excited for people to see it."

Pete Davidson gets new perspective

Pete Davidson's impending fatherhood has given him a new perspective on life. The 31-year-old comedian and his girlfriend Elsie Hewitt revealed earlier this month they are expecting their first child together and since he discovered the 29-year-old beauty was pregnant, the former Saturday Night Live star has experienced a "weird sense of calmness" and is no longer looking to his career for fulfilment. He told People magazine: 'I'm just excited to take care of the little one. The second I found out the news, I was like, 'Oh wow, what I do is just a job.' "I realised I was kind of basing my happiness on work, which is ridiculously unhealthy. So it gave me this weird sense of calmness, where this is just a job and now I have someone to do it for.' The King of Staten Island star is looking forward to his child enjoying playdates with four-month-old Saga, the daughter of his friend Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox. He said: 'We're going to have awesome play dates. Yeah, that's [going to be] a cool play date.' Pete thinks MGK - who also has 16-year-old Casie with former girlfriend Emma Cannon - is a great parent and has been looking to him for inspiration. He said of his pal: 'He's the best dad ever. He flies back and forth to Cleveland twice a week just to see his daughter play volleyball. And he's just always with his kids, and it's just such a beautiful thing to see. 'It's his favourite thing. And he's like, 'This is going to be your favourite thing.' So I'm really excited." Pete realised he can juggle both acting work and parenthood after seeing his The Pickup co-star Keke Palmer, 31, look after her two-year-old son Leodis - who she has with her ex-partner Darius Jackson - on the set of the comedy-heist movie. He told Extra: "What was cool is when we were doing The Pickup, Keke's baby was just born and she had him on set the whole time, and she would go into a take and then run over, you know, play with the baby, and it made me realise it's possible to co-exist in both worlds. You know? "I was really impressed with her… the way she was parenting on set." Pete thought it was "cool" to get parenting advice from his idol, acting legend Eddie Murphy, 64 - who has 10 children. He said: "He actually, his advice was the best. "He goes, 'I have no advice.' He goes, 'Because you can't really tell anybody how to raise their own kid. But it's going to change your life and you're going to love it, and I'll know you'll be good at it.' "So, I mean, that's a cool thing to get from your idol, you know?'

Matthew Lawrence wants to use AI for 'something special' with Robin Williams' voice

Matthew Lawrence wants to use AI to do "something really special" with the late Robin Williams. The 45-year-old star played one of the comedy legend's children in Mrs Doubtfire and he is keen to get the consent of the late actor's family to work on a project using the voice of Robin, who took his own life in 2014. Matthew told Entertainment Weekly: 'Obviously, with the respect and with the okay from his family, I would love to do something really special with his voice, because I know for a generation, that voice is just so iconic. 'It's not just the fact that I knew him and worked with him. "It's in my head, it's in everybody's head, and it would be so cool." Matthew got the idea of using AI to recreate Robin's voice after he saw an old commercial starring the Good Will Hunting star which made him realise there were parallels to the modern day. He explained: 'It's kinda like this very contemporary, modern, almost sort of foreshadowing of what's going on commercial that he did, where he did this computerised voiceover. 'And it always stuck with me. And then, during his passing, with the AI coming out, I'm like, 'Man, he's gotta be the voice of AI. He's gotta be the voice in something.' So yeah, I would love to do that.' One thing Matthew would love to use AI to do with Robin's voice is to give out driving directions on a phone. He said: 'It would be so cool. I'm telling you." The former Boy Meets World actor previously praised Robin for the way he treated him like an adult when they made Mrs. Doubtfire. He told People magazine: "He really opened up. I was only 12. I mean this guy … Man, he was just so amazing to be able to give me the respect, almost as an adult, at 12 years old, to really get an open look into his life, the performer side and then also the private side, and how they wrestled with each other." And even after filming on the 1993 movie was complete, Robin made sure he stayed in touch with his young co-star and offered him advice when he needed it. Matthew said: "He stayed a part of my life, you know? That movie could have wrapped [and] like everybody else, he could have gone his separate way, but he didn't. "He stayed invested, and he gave me some incredible life lessons that definitely kept me from some dark places at times. And I'll just never be able to thank him enough for that."
