Millions of UK households warned as energy bills set to rise again this winter
Our Money team earlier today reported that millions of households have been warned to brace themselves for higher winter energy bills.
Industry experts Cornwall Insight is forecasting that energy regulator Ofgem will increase its price cap to an average of £1,737 a year from the start of October. If so, it would be £17 a year - or 1% - more than the current level of the cap.
The predicted rise comes despite previous indications that bills would be lower this winter, and has been driven in part by funding an expansion of the Warm Home Discount for vulnerable households.
Ofgem reviews its price cap every three months and is due confirm the level from October 1 on Wednesday next week. The cap from July to September fell to £1,720 a year, but covered the summer when many households use the least energy. The next cap, on the other hand, will prove a double blow as it is when those who can afford to usually turn up the heating.

Horrified wife finds 'missing' husband's body in garden days after freak accident
Our UK News team have shared the sad story of a mum who has recalled the horrifying moment she found her "missing" husband's body just days after he was killed in a freak garden accident.
Amy Parry, who had been married to her husband for 17 years, reported Ed missing after returning home to their house in Seasalter, near Whitstable, on April 21, 2025, and finding no trace of him.
The mum-of-two had been looking with the police to try and find Ed. It wasn't until two days later, on April 23, that Amy discovered her husband's body behind the shed after being led by the family dog.
Amy admitted it was a "complete and utter shock" to find her husband at the family home. "I never thought for one second he was on the property", the devastated mum told KentOnline.
"I only found him because one of my dogs kept going behind the back there, and then it just dawned on me. I think I'm still in shock. I feel like I'm talking about someone in a film."
Boeing bursts into flames on Corfu take-off as passengers send 'final texts'
Stunned holidaymakers have described the horror moment a jet engine began erupting fire moments after take-off, our Travel team have reported.
Around 300 people on board a Condor Airlines Boeing 757-300 were left reeling on Saturday night when the plane's right engine started emitting large flames and smoke shortly after leaving Corfu in Greece, with video footage capturing a spluttering fire visible from the ground. Passengers have since revealed how they began sending 'final messages' to their loved ones as smoke rose in front of their windows, fearing they were about to crash.

Our Royal team have shared the story that Prince Harry's secret letter that was placed at a war memorial sends a huge message to the Royal Family following a 'gut punch", according to a royal expert.
It emerged that the Duke of Sussex paid a poignant tribute to his grandfather, Prince Philip, in the letter secretly left at the National Memorial Arboretum on the 80th anniversary of VJ Day.

Energy bills are now expected to rise in autumn, a reversal from the previously anticipated price drop, a prominent forecaster has said. Households will be charged £17 more for a typical annual bill from October as the energy price cap is due to rise, according to consultants Cornwall Insight. In roughly six weeks, an average dual fuel bill will be £1,737 a year, Cornwall Insights predicted, 1% above the current price cap of £1,720 a year. The price cap limits the cost per unit of energy and is revised every three months by the energy regulator Ofgem. Bills had previously been forecast by the consultants to fall in October. Such an increase had not been anticipated until now. Why are bills getting more expensive? Charges are predicted to be introduced from October to fund government policies. Measures such as the expansion of the warm home discount, announced in June, will add roughly £15 to an average monthly bill. The discount will provide £150 in support to 2.7 million extra people this year, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 6 million. Volatile electricity and gas prices are also to blame for the forecast increase. Turbulent geopolitical events during Ofgem's observation period for determining the cap, including the unpredictability of US trade policy, have also had an impact, while Israel's airstrikes on Iran intensified concerns about disruption to gas shipments. Prices have eased, however, with British wholesale gas costs dropping to the lowest level in more than a year. Also helping to keep the possible bill rise relatively small is news from the European Parliament that rules on gas storage stocks for the winter would be eased. Bulk buying and storage of gas in warmer months helps eliminate pressure on supplies when demand is at its highest during cold snaps. When will bills go down? A small drop in bills is forecast for January, but it is subject to geopolitical movements, weather patterns and changes to policy costs. An extra charge, for example, could be added to support new nuclear generating capacity. The official Ofgem announcement will be made on 27 August.

Energy bills expected to rise despite wholesale cost drop
The typical household energy bill is expected to rise by £17 to £1,737 per year when regulator Ofgem's new price cap comes into force, experts at Cornwall Insight have predicted. The latest prediction is a turnaround from its previous forecast in July that bills would drop by 1% from the current £1,720 in October due to easing Middle East tensions. Simon Francis, coordinator of the End Fuel Poverty Coalition, said: "We're about to face our fifth winter of the energy bills crisis, with the average family still paying hundreds of pounds more than they did just a few years ago. "One of the main culprits is the price of gas, which tripled at the height of the crisis and is still 81% higher than before. "What's more, the North Sea, once seen as the nation's source of gas, is in terminal decline and it simply cannot provide power for our heating systems for the long term. If we want affordable, secure energy, we have to look beyond gas and slash the cost of clean electricity." Forecasts suggest Ofgem's October price cap will nudge up by around 1% to £1,737 (about +£17). That means a fifth winter of the energy bills crisis, with families still paying far more than a few years ago.
