The Print30-04-2025
Citing the examples of former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, who were assassinated, Pilot said, 'Find me one BJP leader who took a bullet on his chest.' He said the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) politics of discrimination has led to a sense of insecurity among the people of the country.
Addressing the party's 'Samvidhan Bachao Rally' at the Rangers College grounds here, former Rajasthan deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot said the Congress has made great sacrifices for the country and dared the BJP to name even one of its leaders who took a bullet on the chest for the country's sake.
Dehradun, Apr 30 (PTI) The Congress on Wednesday accused the BJP-led Centre of misusing agencies against the Gandhi family and weakening constitutional institutions.
'Farmers are committing suicide, inflation and unemployment have touched an all-time high but the BJP governments both at the Centre and in the states cannot look beyond their politics of Hindu-Muslim, mandir-masjid,' Pilot said.
The Gandhi family, which has sacrificed everything, is being implicated in false cases, he added.
'Ousting the BJP from power and installing a Congress government in Uttarakhand in 2027 is our collective responsibility,' the former Union minister asserted.
Former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is so arrogant that he wants to change the Constitution and put his photo in place of that of B R Ambedkar.
Rawat asked Congress workers to go to every village in the state over the next six months and hoist the party flag.
Leader of Opposition in the Uttarakhand Assembly Yashpal Arya accused the BJP government of weakening democracy and trying to centralise power by changing the Constitution.
State Congress chief Karan Mahara accused the Centre of interfering with constitutional institutions, misusing ED-CBI and launching attacks on the rights of Dalits and tribals. He also put the state government in the dock for a rise in crimes against women and growing corruption.
All senior leaders of the state Congress and a large number workers attended the rally, which was part of a nationwide campaign launched by the grand old party, calling for protecting constitutional values and opposing the policies of the BJP government.
A demand was also made at the rally for strict action against the perpetrators of a terror attack in south Kashmir's Pahalgam, in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed on April 22. PTI ALM RC

Himachal ministers' power bills total Rs 17.95 lakh in a year; govt saves Rs 59 lakh in subsidy surrender scheme

The Himachal Pradesh government has saved nearly Rs 59 lakh under the electricity surrender subsidy scheme till February 20 this year, according to data placed in the House on the second day of the ongoing Monsoon Session on Tuesday. The state has also incurred an expenditure of Rs 17,95,879 towards electricity bills for residences of cabinet ministers, including Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri and state dignitaries over the past year between January 1, 2024, and February 20, 2025. BJP's Sudhir Sharma, the MLA from Dharamshala, and Congress's Kewal Singh Pathania, the MLA from Shahpur, had sought the information. At Rs 6.78 lakh, the highest bill was for the official residence of Congress MLA from Nagrota, R S Bali, who is also chairman of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC) of cabinet rank. Sukhu's residence at Oak Over incurred a bill of Rs 3.76 lakh during the same period. As per the government statement, the state has benefited by about Rs 59 lakh under the Electricity Subsidy Surrender Scheme till February 20, 2025. The scheme has been operational since last year, providing relief to domestic consumers while ensuring efficient power distribution. On January 2 this year, CM Sukhu was the first person in the state to surrender the subsidy of 125 free units of electricity under his name. The information placed in the House by Sukhu further stated that, alongside subsidy implementation, Himachal Pradesh is aggressively expanding its smart metering network under central schemes like the Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) and Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). So far, a total of 6,52,955 smart meters have been installed across Shimla city, Dharamshala town, and other areas falling under these schemes. The state aims to complete full smart metering in certain areas by February 2026. For Mandi, Hamirpur, and Kangra towns, Letters of Intent (LOIs) have been issued for the installation of 5,05,078 smart meters specifically targeting system metering and priority consumers. Additionally, the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited has approved the installation of 14,78,945 smart consumer meters, which will cover major towns like Kangra, Mandi, and Hamirpur. The implementation of smart meters is expected to reduce power theft, improve billing accuracy, and enhance real-time monitoring for both domestic and commercial consumers.

Opposition's V-P pick may fail Telugu test; YSRCP, TDP set to back NDA name

If the Opposition was hoping to 'stump' the NDA, particularly the TDP, in Telugu-speaking states by nominating retired Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy for vice-presidential polls, it may not pay off as no regional party in either Telangana or Andhra Pradesh seems ready to support its pick. The Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP, which Monday announced its support for the NDA's pick, C P Radhakrishnan, said it would not be changing its mind. 'Only because the nominee is from undivided Andhra Pradesh, we will not change sides. We have made a decision and will stand by it. The vice-president is for the country and not Andhra Pradesh alone,' a senior YSRCP leader told The Indian Express on the condition of anonymity. YSRCP Tirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy had told The Indian Express that the party had decided to support Radhakrishnan after Jagan received a phone call from Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh seeking support. The YSRCP has four Lok Sabha MPs and seven Rajya Sabha MPs while its Rajampaet MP PV Midhun Reddy is in jail in connection with the alleged AP liquor scam. The TDP – the NDA's second-largest constituent and YSRCP rival – is also set to support Reddy. With a photo of a TDP delegation meeting Radhakrishan, its general secretary Nara Lokesh posted on X: 'No ambiguity – only warmth, respect, and resolve. The NDA stands united.' Party sources said that even if some MPs were inclined to vote in favour of a fellow Telugu candidate, they would not do so given that the TDP is 'firmly aligned' with the NDA. 'We have been on the same page with our alliance partners on every issue and this one is no different. Our top leadership has felicitated Radhakrishnan and our stance on the vice-president election will not change. All our MPs from both Houses will toe the party line and vote in the NDA's candidate's favour,' a source said. In Telangana, from where Justice Reddy hails, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) said it was yet to decide its stand, with MLC Dasoju Sravan saying that party chief K Chandrashekar Rao would take a decision at the appropriate time. However, sources indicated that the fact that Reddy is from Telangana would not be a factor in the BRS consultations. 'Reddy is the Congress's pick. The Congress is our main rival and is working against the state's interests, so it is unlikely that we will support the Opposition candidate,' a source said. BRS has no Lok Sabha MP but has four MPs in the Upper House.

‘Bulldozer has run amok': Siswan ‘hills flattened and over 500 trees' axed, BJP slams Punjab Govt

Hills spread over several acres in Punjab's Siswan village, adjoining New Chandigarh, are being illegally levelled and more than 500 trees have been cut, panchayat members and BJP leaders alleged on Tuesday, adding that despite repeated complaints, the forest, wildlife, panchayat departments and Punjab Police failed to act. Punjab BJP media head Vineet Joshi, who visited the site along with Sarpanch Sanjeev Sharma, panchayat members, BJP leaders Mohit Gautam, panch Amandeep Sharma, and lambardar Sher Khan, accused the Government of turning a blind eye to the environmental destruction. 'All pleas have fallen on deaf ears. The bulldozer has run amok while officials remain mute spectators,' Joshi said. Joshi highlighted that the land in question, falling under Khasra number 453, is notified under section 4 of the Punjab Land Preservation Act (PLPA) 1900. Under this Act, no farming, excavation, mining, tree cutting, or even cattle grazing is permitted. 'If the law clearly prohibits any activity, then how have these hills been flattened and hundreds of trees destroyed?' he asked. Joshi further said that the forest and wildlife protection department had already declared this region as the Siswan Community Reserve Forest. 'This means no activity can be allowed that harms flora, fauna, or the ecology. Yet everything prohibited has been carried out openly,' he added. Joshi demanded immediate registration of FIRs under the PLPA, the Wildlife Protection Act, the Forest Act, and criminal provisions for illegal trespass and encroachment on panchayat land. 'Those who have cut the hills and felled over 500 trees must face strict action. If authorities fail to act, the BJP will raise this issue at higher forums,' he said. Villagers echoed Joshi's concern, alleging that despite repeated representations, the administration has 'remained silent spectator', allowing large-scale environmental damage in Siswan.
