Delhi CM Rekha Gupta pledges to rejuvenate Yamuna in maiden I-Day speech
CM Gupta was speaking at Independence Day celebrations at Chhatrasal Stadium in north Delhi.
'Yamuna was neglected for years, no action was taken to fix its pollution. I promise that we will restore Yamuna to its full glory. Right from the first day, the government has dedicated itself to cleaning Yamuna. The government has started a time bound action plan such as installation of decentralised sewage treatment plants to clean Yamuna', she said.
'We are committed to provide better infrastructure, clean water to the people. Delhi belongs to everyone from slums to unauthorised colonies, to affluent colonies…. It has everything but lacks piped water supply..… Many parties have ruled Delhi but it could not be done. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government has dedicated itself to providing the best infrastructure in the country to Delhi, the work is going on towards this,' said Gupta.

Every year, the Delhi government holds Independence Day celebrations at Chhatrasal Stadium where a ceremonial parade featuring contingents from the Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, and school students is held. The CM unfurls the national flag and inspects the parade.
'Delhi needs better roads. Soon after coming to power, we started fixing waterlogging spots in the city. Now we see an improvement in waterlogging problems,' said CM Gupta.
Gupta said her government is committed to providing clean water and piped supply to all, from slums and unauthorised colonies to affluent neighbourhoods — a promise she said previous governments had failed to fulfil.
The CM announced several welfare measures, including that the government will create a board for gig workers, provide housing for all slum dwellers, and establish crèches for working women.
CM referred to the recently passed education bill to check arbitrary fee hikes in private schools, and said the government will distribute laptops to meritorious students, and talent hunts will be organised to promote excellence among students. The government has also increased rewards for sportspersons to encourage youth participation in sports.
'Until now, the governments of Delhi have not taken sports seriously, but our government has decided to provide the highest prize money compared to other states in the country to encourage them and will also provide them with government jobs,' Gupta said.
Highlighting achievements in healthcare, Gupta said that on her government's first day in office, the Ayushman Bharat Yojana was implemented in Delhi.
Since February 20, around 4.5 lakh people have enrolled in the health insurance scheme, and 166 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (neighbourhood clinics) have been opened.
The CM further flagged reforms made by the BJP government to streamline licensing processes for ease of doing business, promising development across transport, sanitation, education, and infrastructure.
'Delhi government is working with complete honesty and ensuring the optimum use of every penny for the welfare of the people. We will walk along and take Delhi forward,' CM said.

Their legacy of courage and sacrifice will remain an eternal source of inspiration for all of us," he said. The Governor stressed that Independence Day is both a symbol of pride and a reminder of "our duties towards the nation". He urged every citizen to contribute to the unity, integrity, and progress of the nation and the state. "In this 'Amrit Kaal', we must resolve to contribute in our respective fields to ensure that India reaches the pinnacle of development and prosperity," he added.

Bihar leaders mark 79th I-Day with flag hoisting events, tributes
Patna: The 79th Independence Day was celebrated across Bihar with patriotic fervour, with leaders making it a point to attend the related events in the state, including their party offices. But, the state's main function was held at Patna's Gandhi Maidan, where the Bihar Chief Minister hoisted the national flag. The CM took the salute of the ceremonial parade of Bihar Police, Bihar Paramilitary Police, Bihar Scout and Guide, and other state security forces. Former Chief Ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi hoisted the national flag at their residence, 10 Circular Road and distributed sweets among attendees. Lalu Prasad Yadav also congratulated the people of the country on the 79th Independence Day. The other major political parties organised their own flag-hoisting ceremonies and paid tribute to the martyrs of the freedom struggle. Tax cuts, 2 slabs, tobacco at 40%: Here's what to expect from revamped GST
The Centre has proposed new rates, allowing some relaxations and cutting down taxes on daily-use items and those under 28% tax slab under the revamped Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, PTI quoted government sources as saying. The development comes just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced next-generation reforms in the GST by Diwali during his Independence Day speech. PM Modi had announced that as a gift to citizens, next-generation reforms to the GST will be introduced by Diwali.(ANI) Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort, PM Modi said it was time to reform GST, which has completed 8 years since its implementation in July 2017, including multiple direct taxes and local duties. Changes likely under renewed GST Two new rates: The central government has proposed two rates, 5 per cent and 18 per cent, under the revamped GST regime, news agency PTI reported, citing sources. Meanwhile, a special 40 per cent rate is likely to be levied on luxury goods, it added. Move from 12% to 5%: Citing government sources, the news agency reported that 99 per cent of the items that currently fall under the 12 per cent GST tax slab will be moved to the 5 per cent bracket under the renewed regime. Shift from 28% to 18%: Furthermore, around 90 per cent of taxable items in the 28 per cent bracket would be moved to the 18 per cent slab. With this renewed GST move, the Centre reportedly expects to give a major boost to consumption, which "will offset revenue loss due to rate rationalisation". What PM Modi said on GST In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi said that the central government will introduce next-generation GST reforms by Diwali, noting that discussions over the same have been held with states. 'We have discussed with states and will usher in next-generation GST reforms by Diwali, which will be a Diwali gift for citizens. Taxes on items used by the common man will be reduced substantially. Our MSMEs will benefit hugely. Daily-use items will become cheaper, which will also strengthen our economy,' he said. A Group of Ministers (GoM), including state finance ministers, is already working on rate rationalisation and the pruning of GST slabs. The Prime Minister also said that a task force will be set up to recommend all necessary GST reforms in a time-bound manner for the 21st century. He said that India must also focus on high-quality, affordable products to build a prosperous, self-reliant nation that honours the sacrifices of freedom fighters. The PM emphasised that self-reliance goes beyond imports, exports, or currency exchange. 'It is tied to our capabilities. When self-reliance begins to erode, so does our strength. To preserve, maintain, and enhance our capabilities, self-reliance is essential.' He said that India must focus on strengthening itself, not limiting others, to earn global respect amid the increasing economic self-interest.
