Another Tamil Nadu Custodial Assault Video Surfaces, Cops Transferred
Even as Tamil Nadu reels under public anger over the alleged custodial death of 27-year-old temple security guard B. Ajithkumar in Sivaganga district, a fresh controversy has erupted with the emergence of CCTV footage showing police brutality at a station in Theni district.
The disturbing video, which surfaced on social media on July 2, shows C. Ramesh (34), an autorickshaw driver from Devadanapatti, being repeatedly beaten by policemen inside the Devadanapatti police station.
The footage has reignited public concerns over police excesses across the state.
According to sources, the incident took place on January 14 when Ramesh was brought to the station for allegedly causing a public nuisance near the Arisikadai bus stop.
Based on complaints from local residents, a police team detained Ramesh, reportedly in an inebriated state, and brought him to the station. Ramesh was allegedly caned inside the station by multiple officers before being booked under Section 296 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for public disturbance.
He was later released on station bail.
What has stunned the public is how the incident came to light. A lawyer who had visited the police station on the same day for an unrelated matter filed a Right to Information (RTI) request in order to verify his presence at the station.
A month later, when the district police responded and provided the CCTV footage, the visuals revealed the brutal assault on Ramesh. Though the video initially remained within legal circles, it was shared on social media on July 2 by the lawyer.
The footage gained traction and went viral in the wake of the public outcry over Ajithkumar's custodial death in Thirupuvanam.
Following the viral video, the Theni district police issued a press statement denying custodial torture.
The statement claimed that the police had used 'minimum necessary force' to subdue Ramesh, who was allegedly intoxicated and uncontrollable at the time.
Despite this denial, Theni District Superintendent of Police R. Shiva Prasad has ordered a departmental inquiry led by an Additional Superintendent of Police.
Pending investigation, Inspector K. Abdulla, Special Sub-Inspector Shiva Sambu, Head Constable S. Pandian, and Constables Marichamy and Valirajan have been transferred to the Armed Reserve (AR) unit.
The incident has intensified calls for greater accountability in police stations across Tamil Nadu, with rights activists demanding independent probes and stronger safeguards against custodial abuse.

Ghaziabad resident beaten by society staff over water supply issue
A resident of a high-rise housing complex in Ghaziabad was beaten by a staff member during an argument over water shortage. Earlier, a similar incident was reported from a high-rise in Greater Noida West, where four staff members of at Eco Village 1 society were arrested for allegedly assaulting residents during a dispute over a late power cut. Videos of the incident were shared widely on social media, showing guards and other staffers thrashing the residents with rods. 'The security guards, supervisors, and other staff of the high-rise turned violent and assaulted the residents with rods. Later, the police were alerted and the injured residents were rushed to a hospital,' Sheshmani Singh, a resident of Eco Village 1, had said.

Bangladeshi teen among 5 rescued from flesh trade in Palghar; 9 held
Palghar, Aug 11 (PTI) Police have busted a flesh trade racket in Maharashtra's Palghar district with the arrest of nine persons and rescued five females, including a juvenile, who were allegedly trafficked to different places in the country, an official said on Monday. Six of those arrested and three victims, including the 14-year-old girl, are Bangladeshi nationals, he said. The juvenile, after being trafficked into India, was given sedative-laced drinks and injections, branded with a hot spoon and pushed into flesh trade, the official from Naigaon police station said. Acting on a tip, the police's anti-human trafficking cell personnel conducted a raid in a flat at Naigaon in Vasai area on July 26 and busted the prostitution racket, he said. The victims, including the juvenile, were allegedly trafficked to different locations like Navi Mumbai, Pune in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and other places in the country, he said. Those arrested include main accused Mohammad Khalid Abdul Bapari (33), who was allegedly responsible for sending the victims to various cities for flesh trade, and agents Juber Harun Sheikh (38) and Shamim Gafar Sardar (39), the police said. Among those arrested are two women, aged 33 and 32, who allegedly facilitated the juvenile's entry into India from Bangladesh. They are accused of giving injections of sedatives to the minor girl, branding her with a hot spoon and forcing her into the flesh trade, the official said. Police teams have been dispatched to various places in the country to apprehend others involved in the racket, he said. A case was registered on July 27 under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Juvenile Justice Act, Foreigners Act and the Passport Act, the police added. Kerala man arrested for extorting ₹1.05 cr using 'digital arrest'
A man from Kerala has been arrested for allegedly duping a South Goa resident of ₹1.05 crore by placing him under "digital arrest", a police official said on Monday. The accused has been remanded in police custody and further investigation is underway under (Pixabay/Representative) The accused, identified as Gokul Prakash MK, posed as a law enforcement official and threatened the victim, who lives in Quepem, claiming he was a suspect in a money laundering case, he said. 'The victim was shown a fake arrest warrant and forced to transfer ₹1.05 crore through multiple bank transactions. Prakash allegedly received ₹24 lakh of the defrauded money in his ICICI Bank account, which has been linked to 13 criminal cases across 10 states involving a total of over ₹9.02 crore," Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) Rahul Gupta said in a statement. A case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act at the Cyber Crime Police Station on July 9, the SP said. "A police team led by PSI Manish Dabale traced the suspect to Kannur in Kerala and arrested him on August 7. The accused has been remanded in police custody and further investigation is underway under the supervision of PI Deepak Pednekar," Gupta said.
