Himachal DGP Verma retires sans official farewell
Himachal Pradesh director general of police (DGP) Atul Verma got no official farewell on his retirement on Saturday. Also, an order issued by Verma awarding DGP Disc to 172 police personnel was withdrawn hours later.
Chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had on May 27 directed Verma, additional chief secretary (ACS) Onkar Chand Sharma and Shimla superintendent of police (SP) Sanjeev Gandhi to proceed on leave. The development came amid a slugfest within the state police force triggered by the probe into the death of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) chief engineer-cum-general manager Vimal Negi, who died under suspicious circumstances in March this year.
Meanwhile, the government has officially handed over the additional charge of the DGP to IPS Ashok Tiwari. Chief secretary Prabodh Saxena issued related orders on Saturday which mentioned that Tiwari would look after the work of DGP till further orders.
The state government had formed a panel of three senior IPS officers — Shyam Bhagat Negi, Ashok Tiwari and Rakesh Agarwal — who are being seen frontrunners for post of DGP.
Meanwhile, DGP Atul Verma, before retiring, issued an order awarding DGP Disc to 172 police personnel, but it was soon withdrawn by Tiwari. The order issued by Verma read, 'On the recommendations of the committee constituted for the award of DGP Disc-2024, 172 police officers/ officials were awarded with the DGP Disc in recognition of their outstanding work during year 2024.'
DGP (jail) SR Ojha also retired on Saturday. The chief secretary issued an order for handing over the additional charge of the jail department to ADGP (law and order) Abhishek Trivedi.

Six interstate drug peddlers held in H'bag
1 2 Hazaribag: A total of six drug peddlers were arrested with 15 kg opium valued at Rs 1.5 crore. Contraband, including 28.57 kg raw materials, three motorcycles, six mobile phones, and Rs 66,000 were seized, SP Anjani Anjan said on Thursday. SP Anjani said, "A team led by Hazaribag (headquarters) SDPO Amit Kumar Anand conducted searches at Lohsinghna, Korrah, and Sadar police station areas. Four smugglers were held from Lohsinghna. They were identified as Pintu Kumar Dangi (25) and Mukul Dangi (28), both residents of Bariatu village under Chatra (Sadar), besides Avinash Kumar (19) and Rahul Pandey (21), both residing in Giddor of Chatra district. Mukul had a criminal record at Ghaziabad police station under the NDPS Act. Avinash and Rahul had six criminal cases against them." "In Korrah, 2.5 kg opium, materials for making opium doda weighing 21.7gm, and Rs 66,000 in cash were confiscated. The arrested were identified as Rahul Yadav (23) and Mohammed Arshad Ansari of Thotwa village under Katkamsandi police station limits. Rahul Yadav belonged to Kendua in Chatra," he added. The SP further said, "From Lohsinghna, 10.8 kg opium and doda valued at 6.67 lakh were seized." Preliminary probe found that the consignment was being transported from Chatra to across the country, police said.

Amarnath Yatra duration reduced to 38 days in 2025, security beefed up

SOPs and vigilance stressed During the review, the DGP emphasised the strict enforcement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and called for proactive security measures to safeguard pilgrims. He also urged field officers to intensify efforts to dismantle terror networks in the region. These instructions follow a high-level meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Jammu to assess security arrangements for the pilgrimage. The meeting focused on evaluating threat levels, deployment plans, and improving coordination between security forces, intelligence agencies, and civil administration. Shah underscored the importance of real-time intelligence sharing and maintaining high vigilance to ensure peace and stability throughout the pilgrimage period.

According to sources, Siddaramaiah held a crucial discussion with senior police and administrative officials at the Vidhana Soudha. The focus of the meeting was on the ongoing investigation into the stampede, court proceedings, and the next steps in the matter. The meeting was attended by director general of police (DGP) MA Saleem, Bengaluru police commissioner B Dayananda, and intelligence chief Hemant Nimbalkar. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar, state home minister G Parameshwara, and chief secretary Shalini Rajneesh were also present. The state government has assured strict action against those responsible for the lapses that led to the incident, which claimed 11 lives. State minister MB Patil said the focus of the government's focus is to give best treatment to those injured and if needed they will be provided treatment in private hospitals also. 'Our focus is to give them the best treatment, if needed we will provide them treatment in the best private hospitals also and act as per humanity… But at the same time, we should look into lapses. Whoever it is and however big the person might be, the lapses will be unearthed in 15 days…and strict action will be taken against them," he said. The Karnataka Police has registered a case on charges of criminal negligence against the Karnataka Cricket Board Administrative Committee, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), among others. According to the deputy commissioner of police, Central Bengaluru, Shekar H Tekkannanavar, an FIR has been filed against RCB, DNA (event manager), Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Administrative Committee and others at Cubbon Park police station. Earlier in the day, the Karnataka High Court issued a notice to the state government over the stampede incident. It took suo motu cognisance of the incident and asked for a further status report. 'News items have been published in various newspapers, narrating the tragedy that happened when 11 persons died and 75 were injured during the course of the victory celebration of RCB. This court is taking cognisance of the incident," the court said. 'Senior Advocate Arun Shyam submitted that two events took place at Vidhana Souda and the stadium, let them give details of where the ambulances were deployed." Issuing notice to the state government, the high court said: 'To ascertain the cause of the tragedy and how to prevent it in future, we have also received communications from several persons on this subject matter. We issue a notice to the state government." The court listed the matter for hearing again on June 10.
