Ram resurrects Hemi engine for popular pickup trucks in 'Symbol of Protest'

CNBC05-06-2025
DETROIT — Stellantis is resurrecting its popular V-8 Hemi engine for its Ram 1500 full-size pickup trucks beginning this summer.
The return of the 5.7-liter engine comes after the company discontinued the powertrain amid tightening fuel economy regulations and a company-wide push toward electric vehicles and more efficient engines last year under ex-Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares.
Ram CEO Tim Kuniskis, who unretired from the automaker late last year, admitted the decision to cancel the Hemi engine for its popular consumer-focused Ram 1500 was a mistake.
"Everyone makes mistakes, but how you handle them defines you. Ram screwed up when we dropped the Hemi — we own it and we fixed it," Kuniskis said. "We're not just bringing back a legendary V-8 engine, we're igniting an assertive product plan and expanding the freedom of choice in powertrain for our customers."
The decision is the latest reversal in automakers' plans this year, as EV adoption has been slower than expected, and as the Trump administration has sought to unwind many of former President Joe Biden's initiatives to push the auto industry away from gas-guzzling internal combustion engines.
The Hemi announcement, which comes as the automaker delays plans for its electric trucks, is part of a new product turnaround plan by Kuniskis that includes 25 product announcements over an 18-month period.
Ram's sales have been struggling for years amid price increases and production mishaps, as well as the automaker killing off the Hemi engine — a staple of the automaker and its predecessors since the 1950s.
Kuniskis expects Hemi to represent 25% to 40% of the Ram 1500's pickup trucks' sales. Ram has continued to offer Hemi engines in larger pickup trucks.
Ram discontinued the Hemi in exchange for a more efficient twin-turbocharged, inline-six-cylinder engine called the Hurricane. That engine will continue to be offered, with the Hemi as a $1,200 option on most models. Another 3.6-liter V-6 engine is standard on entry-level models.
Kunkiskis said his top priority when he returned in December was to get the Hemi back into Ram trucks. He initially said estimates were for it to take 18 months, which the company cut down into six months through a special project team — codenamed F15.
The 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 delivers 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. That compared to the Hurricane that replaced it at 420 horsepower and 469 foot-pounds of torque, while a high-output version of the Hurricane engine is rated at 540 horsepower and 521 foot-pounds of torque.
Unlike previous generations of the truck, the vehicle will not feature "HEMI" on the side on the vehicle. Instead, the company has created a new badge that features a Ram's head coming out of a Hemi engine that it's calling its "Symbol of Protest."
The new logo and name are an effort to regain customers who may have decided not to buy a Ram truck because the company attempted to push more efficient engines and EVs upon them.
"They hate the fact that we took away the freedom of choice," Kuniskis said. "We, as Americans, probably even more so truck buyers, hate the fact that we said, 'This is the choice you get.'"
Kuniskis said the automaker is still expected to eventually offer electric or hybrid pickup trucks to assist in meeting emissions and fuel economy requirements for Ram, but he declined to disclose an updated timeframe after several delays.

Stellantis Stock (STLA) Powers Forward as Tesla's Chinese Challenge Intensifies

Shares in auto maker Stellantis (STLA) raced higher today as rival Tesla (TSLA) was handed another huge roadblock in the Chinese EV market. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. The Stellantis leap came on reports that Hangzhou-based EV maker Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology is launching a battery-powered sedan in mainland China. Leap Lower The B01, a midsize sedan, offers features similar to Tesla's Model 3 but reportedly at less than half the price at 89,800 yuan. According to a report in the South China Morning Post, it is understood that Leapmotor, which is backed by Stellantis, also plans to launch the car in global markets at a yet-to-be-decided date. Deliveries to mainland Chinese customers will reportedly begin this month and include five variants with driving ranges from 430 kilometers to 650 kilometers. The top-end model is priced at 119,800 yuan, the report said. Meanwhile, a Tesla-made Model 3 is priced from 235,500 yuan to 339,500 yuan. Tesla's China sales have suffered this year, falling month after month, as it suffered more intense competition from domestic rivals such as BYD (BYDDY). That's important given that a fifth of Tesla revenues come from China – see below. Stellantis Charge China's car market has also been dragged into a price war as companies compete to win over consumers who, hit by a sluggish economy, are reluctant to spend. However, Tesla recorded a 0.8% increase in June, delivering 71,599 units and breaking an eight-month losing streak. Meanwhile, deliveries of Tesla's China-made Model 3 and Model Y autos surged 16.1% compared to May. These figures include vehicles sold both within China and exported to other markets. Tesla is hoping for further growth from its revamped Model Y car. The six-seat sports utility vehicle could be launched in the fall. Reports suggest that the new Model Y will be larger than the current five-seat version and will have a top speed of 201 kilometers an hour. As for Stellantis, known for traditional car brands such as Chrysler, it keeps charging forward in the electric space. It has been reported that starting this September, some South African Stellantis dealers will sell Leapmotor electric vehicles, starting with the C10 SUV. More models are set to follow over the course of 2025 and into 2026. It's much needed if it wants to keep making inroads into the likes of Tesla both in China and elsewhere. As we see below it has underperformed Tesla substantially over the last 12 months.

The Poissy plant also builds the DS3 Crossback on the same CMP multi-energy platform. Switch Auto Insurance and Save Today! Affordable Auto Insurance, Customized for You The Insurance Savings You Expect Great Rates and Award-Winning Service The Mokka GSE variant will come with a peak output of 207kW (280hp) and an immediate torque of 345Nm, enabling it to accelerate from a standstill to 62mph in 5.9 seconds. The Mokka GSE offers drivers three drive modes: 'Sport' for full power performance, 'Normal' with a top speed of 112mph, and 'Eco' for maximum efficiency. Its energy is stored in a 54kWh lithium-ion battery, and it features a kerb weight of less than 1.6 tonnes. The vehicle's technology includes the front-wheel drive with a Torsen multi-plate limited-slip differential and a chassis with axles that are specially designed and new double hydraulic shock absorbers. The new rear axle has 189% increased roll stiffness compared to the standard Mokka Electric. High-voltage components such as the motor, inverter, battery, and wiring harness are shared with the Mokka GSE Rally. The steering system, brakes, and chassis have been optimised for sportiness, drawing from Opel's experience in electric rallying. The front brakes, designed by Alcon, feature 380mm diameter discs with four-piston callipers. The Mokka GSE's exterior includes GSE-specific inserts and a wheel-tyre combination developed exclusively for this model. The 20-inch alloy wheels are said to be aerodynamically optimised and paired with Michelin Pilot Sport EV 225/40 R20 tyres, available only at Vauxhall for the Mokka GSE. Inside, the driver and front passenger are seated on Alcantara GSE sports seats with integrated headrests. Alcantara door inserts, a newly developed steering system, and a steering wheel flattened at the top and bottom enhance the driving experience. Aluminium sports pedals and a 10-inch digital driver information display, along with a central colour touchscreen featuring GSE performance data, complete the interior. In the UK, Vauxhall managing director Steve Catlin said: 'With its striking design, sharp handling, and outstanding performance, the Mokka GSE is made to be exciting to drive and builds on a proud heritage of sporting Vauxhalls for the modern electric era. We can't wait to see the car in the hands of our car-loving community soon.'
