SANDAKAN: A long-standing issue of 'dead landfills' in Sabah is entering a new phase as the State Government embarks on a rehabilitation project at the Sungai Sibuga landfill using Ignis 3R technology. Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also Local Government and Housing Minister, said the initiative reflects a broader move towards more sustainable and responsible solid waste management in the State.
Advertisement He stressed that ageing landfill sites, though often out of sight, continue to affect public health, safety, and land use in growing urban areas. Joachim noted that after evaluating various technologies, Ignis 3R was found to be the most suitable for Sabah's context in terms of cost, logistics, and feasibility. He expressed confidence in the solution, calling it timely and practical, and highlighted that the project is led by a Sabahan, Ignis SG Sabah CEO Dr Davina Markus. Davina said the initiative marks a personal mission to address unmanaged waste buildup while supporting national green goals through a closed-loop, non-incineration system. The project, fully funded through a private financing initiative and supported by Exim Bank, is expected to be completed by July 2026 and aims to inspire broader environmental commitment across Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PMX's special announcement shows Malaysia's strong economic fundamentals - Hajiji

Chief Minister of Sabah Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor — Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (July 23): The State Government views Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's special announcement to ease the people's cost of living as an indication of the nation's strong economic fundamentals under the Madani Government. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the State Government welcomed the people-centric initiatives as they were meant to lessen the burden of the rakyat. 'It shows that the Prime Minister has the people's interest at heart,' he said in a statement here on Wednesday. Hajiji said the RM100 one-off assistance for all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above to purchase basic goods in 4,100 shopping outlets, coupled with the expansion of the Rahmah Madani sales to every state constituency, is a boon to the rakyat. He also noted that the lowering of the RON95 petrol price to RM1.99 per litre through the targeted subsidy initiative, which is expected to benefit more than 18 million Malaysians, fulfilled the aspirations of the people. 'The declaration of the eve of Malaysia Day (September 15) as a public holiday, is a Federal Government's recognition of the special day for the whole country,' he said.

Factory Worker Loses RM210,000 To Fake Investment Scheme Advertised On Facebook

IPOH, July 23 (Bernama) -- A factory worker lost RM210,000 in life savings after falling victim to a non-existent investment scheme advertised on Facebook. The victim, known only as Chan, 47, said he came across the social media advertisement on March 26 promoting a high-return investment opportunity, which prompted him to invest. He later contacted an individual named Linda via WhatsApp, who introduced herself as a remisier or investment intermediary. "The investment seemed legitimate as I was instructed to download the 'Citi CDT' App from the Apple Store. The app verified, and I started by investing RM10,000 on the same day," he said during a press conference at the Perak MCA Building today. Chan went on to make five more transfers between April 2 and April 28 via online banking, cash deposit machines and over-the-counter transactions to four different bank accounts. Chan added that he was later informed he would receive returns of nearly RM1.7 million, but only if he made an additional payment of RM190,472.40, supposedly to release the profits. "After checking with several friends, they told me I had been scammed. I then lodged a police report at the Sungai Senam police station," he said. Meanwhile, Perak MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Yuen Chan How urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the case. 'In the past, syndicates would use suspicious links to download fake apps. Now, they're developing legitimate-looking apps that can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play.

Factory owner cheated of RM210,000 in online share investment scam

IPOH: A factory owner here lost about RM210,000 after falling victim to an online share investment scam. Only wanting to be known as Chan, the 47-year-old said he had initially wanted to try investing in shares and saw an advertisement on Facebook, clicking on the link on March 26. "The link led me to a WhatsApp chat channel where I was contacted by someone called Linda. "She offered me several company share schemes and I started one with RM10,000," he said in a press conference held by Perak MCA public services and complaints bureau chief Charles Yuen here on Wednesday (July 23). "I would get some returns, and started to trust the schemes and invested in more. "I was also asked to download a mobile app called CDT Citi, which allows me to keep track of my investments," he added. Chan said he had googled the names of the companies he wanted to invest in and thought they were real entities. "I did find the names and they seemed to be private limited companies. "As I was required to pay more to access the company profile, I didn't continue and decided to just invest in it," he said. Chan said in May, he was informed that his investment had returned about RM1.7mil in profits and could withdraw the money. "To do so, I would be required to pay commissions and some taxes. "After paying about RM29,000, I was still unable to withdraw the money," he said, adding that a report was lodged at the Sungai Senam police station here on July 13. "I was told to pay more and it was then I realised I had been cheated," he added. Chan said he hopes that the police would act promptly and investigate the matter. "I urge the people to be careful and not to trust any investment schemes on social media platforms. "If there are similar incidents, I hope the victims will go to the police so they can have more data to investigate and take actions," he said. Yuen said he hopes the police would investigate the companies first, which could provide more lead to the case. "I think it will be difficult to track down this 'Linda' person. "The police could check the companies, to see if they are real entities or proxies used by scammers. "At least the police could shed some light to the complainant whether such companies are real or not. "I will continue to follow up on the matter with the police," he added.
