Enthralling viewers for generations after generations, some of the biggest blockbusters in history have come from the fantastical subgenre, so it stands to reason that many of our favourite films are rooted in sci-fi.
But which one reigns supreme?
Letterboxd, a social media platform designed for film fans, allows users to log and rate films as they watch them.
So, gathering data from the platform by looking at the highest average ratings under science fiction, we have found the top 10 sci-fi films as decided by film fans themselves.

Coming in at number 10 is World of Tomorrow, a series of short films stitched together to make one feature-length epic.
It follows a young girl named Emily who is contacted by a clone from her future self from 227 years into the future, who takes her to the Outernet, a futuristic version of the internet which allows them to explore their memories.

La Jetée is a French sci-fi thriller that you can watch on your lunch break with time to spare.
Clocking in at just half an hour, Chris Marker's 1966 film is told almost entirely using still photos and explores the time loop story of a post-nuclear war experiment in time travel featuring unnamed characters.

Regularly hailed as one of the best sci-fi films ever made, The Thing garnered a cult following after its home video release back in the 80s.
John Carpenter's classic sci-fi film tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who come across an extraterrestrial life form that can infiltrate the bodies of other living organisms and imitate them to go undetected.

While Part One didn't break the top 20 on Letterboxd, Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two ranks in number seven of the top sci-fi films.
The 2024 sequel sees Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) unite with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen to hatch a plan for revenge against the Harkonnen and those who killed his family.

Despite their legendary status in the world of film, only one Star Wars film impressed Letterboxd users enough to enter the top 10.
Set three years after the events of A New Hope, Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) continues to lead the Rebel Alliance against the Galactic Empire, while Luke Skywalker (Luke Hamill) trains in the ways of the Jedi.

Spider-Man swings into the top five with the animated masterpiece Into the Spider-Verse, released in 2018.
Miles Morales gains powers after being bitten by a spider and protects the city as Spider-Man, soon meeting alternate versions of himself that recruit him into the task of saving the entire multiverse.

Released in 1979, Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker was ranked number 29 on the BFI's list of the greatest films of all time – but it sits at number 4 in Letterboxd's sci-fi rankings.
It tells the story of an expedition led by a figure known as the Stalkee (Alexander Kaidanovsky), who guides two clients to a mysterious restricted site known simply as the Zone, where there supposedly exists a room that grants a person's innermost desires.

We're back into the Spider-verse – or across it, I should say – in our number three spot.
Shameik Moore is back as Miles Morales in the 2023 film, as he joined forces with Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) in a bid to stop a new threat in the form of the Spot.

Christopher Nolan's science fiction magnum opus Interstellar is still raved about more than 10 years after its release, but it didn't quite hit the top spot for Letterboxd users.
Set in a dystopian future where Earth is suffering from a catastrophic famine, a group of astronauts travels through a wormhole near Saturn in a bid to find a new home to inhabit.

Japanese animated apocalyptic science fiction Neon Genesis Evangelion: End of Evangelion is one of the greatest animated films ever made, nay, one of the greatest films ever made, so it stands to reason it's here at number one.
Directed by Hideaki Anno and Kazuya Tsurumaki, it serves as an alternate ending to the television series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which aired from 1995 to 1996.
It follows the teenagers Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu, who pilot mechas called Evangelion to defeat enemies who threaten humanity, named Angels.

Princess Andre has admitted that she goes to her stepmum Emily for advice about her love life. The daughter of Peter Andre and Katie Price, who recently turned 18, made the revelation in her new ITV show, The Princess Diaries. It follows Princess's life as she turns 18 and tries to find her place in the world - and it is also notably when she is mourning the loss of her two-year relationship. She says: 'Ems gives the best advice - I feel like if I'm ever in a situation I don't want to talk to dad about, I'll speak to Ems about it.' Emily MacDonagh, 35, is 52-year-old Peter's second wife and the pair share three children Amelia, 11, Theo, nine, and Arabella, 13 months. In the show, Princess admits that she is not yet ready to move on from her relationship with her former boyfriend, whose name has not been made publicly available. Princess tells Emily that she can't currently 'picture' herself with anyone else and feels 'lost and confused' after the split. She says: 'I don't think I'm really ready to move on. Another relationship does not interest me right now. 'Me and the ex are still in touch. We're friends but there's still a lot of love there.' In response to this Emily, a doctor, tells the teenager that she does not have to move on immediately and that it will likely do her good to spend some time by herself. She advised: 'It's important to have time to yourself, to find out who you are as well. 'It's not the right time for you, you can't be bothered at the moment. If the right person comes along, you'll be bothered. 'You've got a lot to give to someone else. You're a big catch.' The revelation comes after Princess admitted she 'saw things kids shouldn't' during her childhood - and is still recovering from her mother's 'dark times'. The 18-year-old has for the first time laid bare the impact of her parents' tumultuous divorce. Speaking during episode one of her ITV show, which aired on Sunday night, she told viewers: 'I had so much on my plate at such a young age.' Princess also described the impact her mother's subsequent chaotic romances and lifestyle had on her growing up. She told how Katie fell into a 'dark' place following her 2018 split from third husband Kieran Hayler - who she shares Bunny, 10, and Jett, 11, with - after she discovered he had been unfaithful throughout their marriage. Katie herself has previously admitted to attempting suicide and relying on drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism at the time, and now Princess has told how it affected her. Princess revealed on the show how she has a counsellor and previously 'couldn't just go to my dad' due to her parents, who split in 2009, 'not liking each other'. Abi and Carl's affair exposed in Coronation Street amid reckless display
Abi Webster (Sally Carman) and brother in law Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) have been playing with fire in Coronation Street as they've starting meeting up for passionate encounters. In a tight-knit place like Weatherfield where the net curtains are forever twitching, it's only a matter of time before somebody works out what's going on. And the person who discovers the illicit affair is probably the worst person possible apart from Kevin (Michael Le Vell). It's Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), who is the human embodiment of the phrase 'loose cannon.' Tracy, of course, is a bit partial to Carl herself and has taken every opportunity to flirt with him. She's at it again in an upcoming episode and Carl is flirting back – partly to cover for the fact that he really only has eyes for Abi. Even so, Abi is cross when he lets slip his room number at the Chariot Square Hotel to Tracy, but Carl appeases her and they arrange to meet up later at the hotel. When Carl gets to his room later, anticipating meeting Abi, he's pleased to find she's already there and is in the shower. But as the bathroom door opens there's a shock. It's Tracy. Carl later reports back to Abi that Tracy turned up at the hotel and that he rejected her advances. But did he? Abi's not sure and she's not best pleased. With Debbie (Sue Devaney) encouraging Tracy to try again with Carl, there's still tension between Carl and Abi. He tells her that as long as she's still sleeping with Kevin there's no reason why he shouldn't sleep with Tracy. Abi's supposed to be going on holiday with Kevin, but she tells him she can't find her passport and urges him to go on ahead of her and she'll join him when she's sorted the passport situation out. Meanwhile Tracy is once again at the hotel with Carl, but this time he tells her he's in love with someone else. He's shocked when she immediately correctly guesses who the someone else is. How is he going to talk his way out of that? The following night Abi and Carl take advantage of Kevin and Jack (Kyran Bowes) being away and Carl stays the night at number 13. Abi dashes out to buy some lager because it's thirsty work, and Tracy sees her. The end ‘sealed' for Charity and Mack in Emmerdale as row explodes over sad loss
One could say the writing has been on the wall for Emmerdale's Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) and Charity Dingle's (Emma Atkins) marriage ever since she agreed to carry her granddaughter's baby. Mack was very clear at the beginning of the surrogacy saga that he did not want Charity playing surrogate. But after a lot of emotional blackmail and her disregarding his feelings for Sarah Sugden's (Katie Hill), he cracked and gave it his blessing. He later admitted to Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) that he only said yes as the probability of it being successful was so low. Mack later had to eat his words after the embryo transfer and it seemed like everything was going ahead. But then devastation hit – Mack convinced Charity (Emma Atkins) to go for a walk, where she slipped and fell, accidentally destroying the embryo. Mack foolishly revealed he was secretly pleased, causing Charity to kick him out. Mack felt forced to consent to a second try, which saw Charity get pregnant, and now Mack truly is facing his biggest fear of losing his wife. And yet Charity is still ignoring his needs. He wants them to spend time together, but she's too distracted with everything. Feeling rejected, Mack heads to the pub to drown his sorrows alone. Ross Barton (Michael Parr) finds him and senses something going on, so ribs him about the surrogacy.
