Jeff Bezos' Venice wedding creates travel chaos for tourists in the floating city
As Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez celebrate their lavish three-day wedding (June 24–28) this week in Venice, tourists are finding the city's charm a bit crowded and commodified. Protesters in Venice claimed a significant win after Jeff Bezos and his wedding party relocated their main celebration from the city center to the Arsenale. While the original venue of Scuola Grande della Misericordia was never officially confirmed, the BBC reported that local officials say the last-minute change was prompted by growing pressure from activists opposed to the billionaire's high-profile festivities. Situated in the eastern Castello district of the city, the reported new venue is said to be more isolated, surrounded by water and only land-accessible via bridges that can be raised. Three luxury hotels are officially booked and some water taxis reserved for the wedding, the local press is swarming the event with paparazzi and mega‑yachts crowding canals. Tourists report unexpected closures, rerouted traffic, and a paparazzi-heavy ambiance. Wedding festivities are anticipated to take place around some of the city's most central locations, with Venice City Hall mandating the closure of the area surrounding the medieval church Madonna dell'Orto on Wednesday for a Thursday night open-air gathering of guests. Officials said the Police Headquarters of Venice is handling the city's security operations for the wedding. The police department did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment. Nevertheless, some residents and vendors welcome the influx – pointing out 80% of wedding provisions are sourced from Venetian artisans, according to The Associated Press – while others condemn it as a multimillion-dollar 'city rental' at the expense of ordinary life. "Those who bring investment, create jobs, and bolster Venice's global standing will always be welcome here," Deputy Mayor of Tourism Department Simone Venturini said in a statement to USA TODAY. "We will continue to strive for a city that balances hospitality with the protection of its unique heritage, guided by both vision and equilibrium." 'Squid Game' Creator Reveals Secret Meaning Behind The Show's Iconic Shapes
In Squid Game, the masked workers who oversee the deadly games wear red jumpsuits and black masks marked with one of three shapes: circle, triangle, or square. These shapes denote a strict hierarchy within the game's operations, as explained by Hwang Dong-hyuk. Circle-masked workers are the lowest rank, tasked with menial labor like cleaning blood, serving food, and disposing of bodies. Triangle-masked workers are mid-level enforcers, armed with weapons to maintain order and eliminate losing players. Square-masked workers are the highest-ranking, acting as managers who oversee the games and communicate directly with the Front Man. 'The circle symbol represents the workers, the triangle is the symbol for the army, while the square is for the manager,' Hwang stated at a 2021 Netflix press conference. This structure mirrors real-world class systems, where power and privilege escalate with rank.

Brian Johnson, an online influencer who calls himself 'Liver King,' was arrested Tuesday in Austin after he made 'terroristic' threats against popular podcaster Joe Rogan, according to police. Johnson, 47, is the subject of Netflix's 'Untold: The Liver King' documentary, released in May. According to the streamer's description of the film, 'The Liver King built an online fitness empire by devouring raw meat and promoting an all-natural ancestral lifestyle, with the muscles to back it up. Featuring interviews with the man himself, his family and business partners, this documentary unravels the wild story of The Liver King's rapid rise to internet fame and the controversy and backlash once a steroid scandal came to light.' 'Detectives reviewed the posts and observed that Johnson was traveling to Austin while continuing to make threatening statements,' a spokesperson for the police department said in a statement. 'Detectives contacted Mr. Rogan, who stated he had never had any interaction with Johnson and considered the posts to be threatening. Based on this information, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Johnson on a charge of Terroristic Threat.' At approximately 5:59 p.m. Tuesday, APD officers located Johnson at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin and 'took him into custody without incident,' the police department spokesperson said. Johnson (shown above right in his police booking photo) was transported to the Travis County Jail and charged with Terroristic Threat, a Class B misdemeanor. On Monday (June 23), Johnson had posted a video on Instagram threatening Rogan. 'Joe Rogan, I'm calling you out, my name's Liver King,' Johnson said in the video. 'Man to man, I'm picking a fight with you. I have no training in jiu-jitsu, you're a black belt, you should dismantle me. But I'm picking a fight with you. Your rules, I'll come to you, whenever you're ready.' In another video he posted Monday, he said, 'You never come across something like this, willing to die, hoping that you'll choke me out, because that's a dream come true.' A video was posted to the Liver King Instagram account Tuesday that showed Johnson's wife, Bozena 'Barbara' Johnson, heading to the lobby of the hotel and Johnson handcuffed and being put into a police car. Videos posted on the account just prior to that show Johnson getting dressed in a hotel room, drinking an espresso and filing his nails, presumably as he's getting ready to surrender to the cops. A representative for Rogan didn't respond to a request for comment. There was no reply to an email seeking comment sent to the contact listed for Johnson's company.
