JP Nadda hoists tricolour at party office, says India's economy progresses under PM Modi's leadership
Union Minister JP Nadda highlighted the country's economic progress in the past 11 years under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, ' In the last 11 years, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the country is advancing towards becoming a leading economy, towards becoming a strong economy.'
He also underlined India's continuous economic growth and added, 'When there is instability in the world and there is economic difficulty, besides a strong economy, India is leading as a leading economy.'
Meanwhile, in his 12th Independence Day address to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered bold announcements that indicated India's commitment to making significant progress in the future.PM Modi outlined plans for various initiatives, including the production of India's first semiconductor chip, the development of jet engines, the creation of 1 lakh crore in youth employment opportunities, and a tenfold expansion of the nuclear program.
He presented his vision for 'Naya Bharat' (New India) and set the goal of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047. Key points from PM Modi's address included:
1. Semiconductors: From Lost Decades to Mission Mode
Recalling how attempts to set up semiconductor factories 50-60 years ago were 'killed at birth' while other nations prospered, PM Modi announced that India is now in mission mode. By the end of this year, the nation will roll out its first Made in India chip.
2 . Nuclear Energy Capacity to Grow Tenfold by 2047. Work is underway on 10 new nuclear reactors as part of India's mission to increase nuclear power generation capacity by over ten times in the next two decades.
3. GST Reforms - A Diwali Gift
Next-generation GST reforms will be unveiled on Diwali, reducing taxes on essential goods and providing relief to MSMEs, local vendors, and consumers.
4. Reform Task Force for a $10 Trillion Bharat
PM Modi announced the creation of a dedicated Reform Task Force to drive next-generation reforms. Its mandate: accelerate economic growth, cut red tape, modernise governance, and prepare Bharat for the demands of a $10 trillion economy by 2047.
5.1 Lakh Crore PM Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana
PM Modi launched a major employment scheme worth 1 lakh crore, under which newly employed youth will receive 15,000 per month. The scheme aims to benefit 3 crore young Indians, strengthening the bridge from Swatantra Bharat to Samriddha Bharat.
6. High-Powered Demography Mission
PM Modi highlighted the dangers of demographic imbalance due to infiltration and illegal migration in border areas. He announced the launch of a High-Powered Demography Mission to address this national security challenge, ensuring the unity, integrity, and rights of India's citizens are safeguarded.
7 . Energy Independence - Samudra Manthan Begins
PM Modi pointed out that a large share of India's budget still goes toward importing petrol, diesel, and gas. He announced the launch of the National Deepwater Exploration Mission to tap ocean resources, alongside major expansions in solar, hydrogen, hydro and nuclear power.
8. Made in India Jet Engines - A National Challenge
PM Modi made a dramatic announcement that just like how we made vaccines during COVID, and UPI for digital payments, we should build our own jet engines too for our jet engines and asked our scientists and youth to take it up as a direct challenge. (ANI)

Modi, according to Indian media, might also visit China this month. India's foreign ministry said in a social media post that 'important engagements of the India-China special representatives and on bilateral relations' were scheduled over the next two days. The world's two most populous nations are intense rivals competing for influence across South Asia and fought a deadly border clash in 2020. But caught in global trade and geopolitical turbulence triggered by US President Donald Trump's tariff war, the countries have moved to mend ties. Restarting border trade across their icy and high-altitude Himalayan border is expected to feature high on Wang's agenda. India proposes lowering GST on small cars, insurance premiums, says source

(Reuters pic) NEW DELHI : India has proposed lowering the goods and services tax (GST) on small cars to 18% from the current 28% as part of sweeping consumption tax cuts, a government source said today. The reduction, part of a programme of tax cuts announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, will boost sales of the country's biggest carmaker Maruti Suzuki. The federal government has suggested lowering GST on small petrol and diesel cars to 18% from the current 28%, said the source who is directly involved in the matter. GST on health and life insurance premiums may also be lowered to 5% or even zero from 18% currently, the same source said. 'The tax cuts, if approved, are expected to be announced by Diwali, a major, five-day Hindu festival in October,' the source said. Diwali is also the country's biggest shopping season. India's finance ministry did not reply to an e-mail seeking comment. Sales of small cars, defined as those having engine capacity below 1200cc for petrol vehicles and 1500cc for diesel and not exceeding 4 metres in length, have slowed over the last few years as buyers switched to bigger, feature-rich SUVs. Small cars made up a third of the 4.3 million passenger vehicles sold in the world's third-largest automobile market last fiscal year, down from nearly 50% pre-Covid-19, industry data showed. The tax cut will be a big win for Maruti, whose market share has plunged to about 40% from over 50% in the last five years as sales of its small cars such as Alto, Dzire and Wagon-R dropped. The segment makes up half of all cars sold by Maruti – majority-owned by Japan's Suzuki Motor. Carmakers Hyundai Motor India and Tata Motors also stand to gain. Cars with higher engine capacity that attract a 28% GST and additional levy of up to 22% – resulting in total taxes of about 50% – may come under a new special rate of 40%, the source said. The source added that details are being firmed up to consider if any extra levies should be imposed over the 40% to keep the overall tax incidence for big cars the same at 43%-50%.

PTM Holland chapter highlights Kabul Khel Jirga, appeals for flood relief across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The Hague [Netherlands] August 18 (ANI): The Holland Chapter of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) has reported a large gathering of the Kabul Khel tribe in North Waziristan, which was called to address ongoing state-sponsored insecurity in their businesses. The event saw a considerable turnout from both the elders and the youth of Shiwa Kabul Khel. The tribe firmly asserted that they would not permit their land to be taken under the guise of an 'operation.' They stated, 'If it comes to it, we will be buried in our own homes and rooms, but we will not abandon our land.' The jirga determined that the elders and youth would meet with the North Waziristan Commandant and other government officials at Spin Wam to discuss the current situation. They aim to communicate that they are no longer willing to endure what they termed 'unfounded curfews' or the insecurity that is impacting their villages and markets. The next jirga for the Kabul Khel tribe has been scheduled for August 18 at 7 a.m., at which time the results of their discussions with the government will be shared with the community, and decisions will be made regarding further actions. In addition to these issues, the PTM Holland Chapter highlighted distressing reports concerning significant human and material losses due to flooding in various areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, such as Bunir, Swat, Shangla, Bajaur, Battagram, and Lower Dir. The movement pointed out that while the Pashtun homeland is suffering from the ravages of commercial conflicts, the lack of an independent and welfare-focused governance system has left communities defenceless against the impacts of environmental changes and floods, as well as unable to implement preventive measures. PTM appealed to the broader Pashtun community, particularly to its fellow movement members, urging them to contribute positively wherever support is feasible. Pashtuns living abroad were particularly encouraged to connect with international aid agencies and advocate for direct assistance to the affected areas.
