What were the key announcements in PM Modi's Independence Day 2025 speech?
The CM said the State's commitment to women's empowerment is evident from the 2025-26 annual Budget, in which allocations of $89,861 crore have been made for schemes in regard to this.
Listing the social welfare measures undertaken by his government, Mr. Majhi announced that 27 lakh poor families, who are beneficiaries of the 'Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana', in 11 districts will be given 5 kg additional rice per month for three months free of charge.

"The Vigilance Department's sword is hanging. I have directed authorities to take action first and then consider the post of officials. Every night of the corrupt will be spent in fear and sorrow, I guarantee this," he said.

He said plans are afoot to formulate new schemes for the empowerment of the youth. Mr. Majhi also appealed to all to work in tandem for the development of the State.
Stop using 'Harijan' word in official communications: Odisha Government
"In a democracy, everyone has the right to criticise the government, and it should be done. However, while criticising the government, sometimes some individuals and organisations are crossing the line between 'government' and 'nation', which is not good. We may differ on issues, but when it comes to the nation, all should unite," he said.
Mr. Majhi said his government will continue to work for preserving and promoting the Odia identity.

Student dies in mishap at time of I-Day function in Jodhpur

1 2 Jodhpur: A 12-year-old school student died here after being hit by a dumper truck early morning on Independence Day, while three other students accompanying him were seriously injured. All four were heading to their school on one motorcycle. Enraged family members and local residents staged a protest and blocked the road at Panchbatti Chowk. They were joined by Congress leaders to support their demands. They demanded strict action against the guilty dumper driver, along with compensation, an impartial investigation, and a job for one member of the family. After several hours of discussions, the protest was called off following an assurance of immediate financial aid of Rs 11 lakh from the CM Relief Fund, along with a promise to provide a contractual job to one dependent of the family and to extend benefits of govt schemes by the administration. This incident took place at a time when Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma was scheduled to attend an Independence Day programme at the Shaheed Memorial in Jodhpur, barely a few meters away from the accident spot. As soon as news of the accident spread, panic spread through the police administration. Disturbing that PM's I-Day speech didn't have Nehru's mention: Pawar

1 2 Pune: NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Saturday was critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech and said not mentioning the name of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was "disturbing". "I heard the Prime Minister's speech from the Red Fort. It was very disturbing that he did not mention Nehru in his entire speech," Pawar said in a private function in Pune, reacting to Modi's speech. "Nehru gave important years of his youth to the freedom struggle of India. After independence, he led the country and spread the message of peace worldwide. Even after his immense contribution, his name was not taken by the Prime Minister, which was unfortunate," the veteran politician said. Speaking at the private event organised to celebrate the 81st birthday of senior Congress member and former MLC Ulhas Pawar, Sharad Pawar said, "All his life, Ulhas Pawar walked on the path shown by Gandhi-Nehru. He also maintained a healthy communication with personalities from other fields such as literature and the Warkari community. It is essential for the country to continue its journey on the path of Gandhi and Nehru. " Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
