Gaimukh ghat stretch on Ghodbunder highway gets durable overhaul to withstand heavy traffic

Time of India6 days ago
Thane: The Gaimukh Ghat stretch on Ghodbunder Highway which is a vital road link connecting Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Gujarat, Nashik, and North Maharashtra, is finally getting a durable overhaul, expected to withstand the heavy daily traffic movement on the route, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde announced on Friday.
Shinde, while inspecting the repair works on the stretch, admitted that previous repeated repairs on the barely 800 meter stretch of the 14 km long highway, failed, especially during monsoons when potholes and flooding crippled the traffic movement, often causing massive snarls that stretched till Thane city.
This highway, which partly cuts through Thane and Mira Bhayander limits, sees a mix of nearly a lakh outbound and city traffic sharing space and facing frequent congestion due to damaged road stretches, regulars complain.

"We have undertaken blocks on the highway for three days to carry out extensive repair works that involve digging, levelling the existing stretch, and constructing a strong base with Water Bound Macadam (WBM), followed by grouting and Dense Bituminous Macadam (DBM). A 4-inch layer of durable mastic, known for its concrete-like strength, will be later applied on the top to ensure long-lasting durability," Shinde informed the media during a surprise visit to the spot.
A 60-meter-wide elevated road has also been approved to tackle the region's crushing traffic. Forest department approvals are expected to clear soon, Shinde said.
Officials said channels are also being built alongside the road to permanently tackle waterlogging instances. "This highway is a critical artery connecting Mumbai with other parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat. Prioritising its repair was necessary. Once done, this stretch will stand strong through heavy rains and relentless traffic," said a senior official.
Meanwhile, commuters using the highway on the festive weekend complained of delays as two of the four lanes were barricaded for repairs. Thane traffic police urged travellers to use alternative routes.

Red alert for Delhi: IMD issues warning, as heavy rains flood streets and cancel flights

When heavy monsoon rains pound Delhi, they don't just bring inconvenience; they can disrupt entire routines. Streets flood, traffic slows to a crawl, flights get delayed or canceled, and the city's infrastructure gets tested to its limits. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Recently, that disruption has elevated from a yellow alert to a full-blown red alert, which is a clear signal that the situation is serious and immediate action is needed. Whether someone is heading out for work, catching a flight, or watching the forecast, what lies ahead in the day demands attention. Parts of Delhi-NCR were hit by heavy rain early Thursday morning, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to elevate the weather warning from yellow to red alert. The streets of NCR are highly inundated The downpour brought severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the region. Streets in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad were inundated, with vehicles crawling through flooded roads and commute times significantly impacted. This intense spell of rain is intensifying just ahead of Independence Day, raising concerns over potential disruptions to celebrations and travel plans. IMD issues a warning for heavy downpour The IMD has issued alerts not just for Delhi-NCR, but also for Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, North Madhya Pradesh, and West Uttar Pradesh, warning of continued heavy rainfall in the coming hours. According to a TOI report, over 300 flights were disrupted during a heavy rain spell over Raksha Bandhan, with areas like Safdarjung and Pragati Maidan recording more than 100 mm of rain within hours. On another morning, more than 130 flights were delayed as rain battered the region. Climate experts note that this monsoon season has deviated from usual patterns. 'Last year, we had La Niña conditions, which were driving the monsoon. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This time, there are neutral conditions, but we have had a lot of active weather systems dominating northwest India. This has kept the plains particularly wet, with light to moderate spells on most days and heavy spells on isolated days,' explained Mahesh Palawat, vice president at Skymet, as per a TOI report. With monsoon still active, more rain is expected to push the city even closer to or beyond that benchmark. The red alert isn't just a label; it's a warning for us to stay informed, take precautions, and adjust plans as the monsoon continues to challenge life in India's capital.

Rain & high travel fares slow down daily commute

1 2 Hyderabad: Erratic rain spells have thrown daily travel into disarray, with commuters struggling to book autos or cabs. Ride-hailing apps are showing fewer vehicles, longer wait times, and inflated fares, sometimes nearly double the usual rates, especially during peak hours. For many, even short trips now cost much more than before. Sowmya Reddy, 25, from Kukatpally, said she has been paying almost twice her usual fare for the past three days. "I normally get an auto to my office in Banjara Hills for Rs 180–200, but this morning it showed around Rs 500. Yesterday, I waited 25 minutes for a driver to accept my booking. Just to get a ride in these rains, I end up adding Rs 100 as a tip," she said. Drivers blame flooded streets, poor visibility, and heavy traffic for avoiding certain areas. Srinivas, an auto driver from the western part of the city, said, "In some lanes and main roads, water reaches up to the footrest. If it enters the engine, the auto stops. Repairs cost Rs 500 to 1,000, which is more than my day's earnings." Passengers say fare surges and cancellations are making travel unpredictable . Anjali M from Cherlapalli said, "I usually travel to Secunderabad for Rs 80 to 90. Yesterday it showed Rs 250–280, and even then no one accepted the ride. Maybe there should be rules to control fares during rains." Susmitha Meekala from Madhapur added, "Today, one auto driver charged me Rs 90 but took a wrong route. Many refuse bookings or demand at least Rs 50 extra before moving." With no respite from the rains in sight, commuters and drivers remain stuck in a monsoon tug-of-war, one over flooded streets, mounting repair costs, and spiralling fares.
