Killed off in X-Men franchise, the Superman actor is now soaring in the DC universe

Marvel Studios definitely have their backs up after the positive reactions received by James Gunn's latest film, Superman. The film's box office collection is also growing exponentially by the day. One of the key takeaways from the film was the introduction of the Justice Gang, and out of the three superheroes, Mister Terrific has left a mark. Played by Edi Gathegi, the character added serious firepower to the film, and it is quite interesting to know that DC's latest winning stead was once in a competing stable and was part of the X-Men. Everyone is wondering, did Marvel lose out on a winner?
Back in 2011, the X-Men franchise was owned by 20th Century Studios, and they came out with the film X-Men: First Class, which followed the journey of a young Charles Xavier and Magneto trying to create a mutant super team in order to deal with the repercussions of coming out to the world about their abilities. One of the young recruits was a mutant named Darwin (played by Edi), and anyone who is familiar with the comics knows about the incredible shape-shifting capabilities he possessed. What came as a surprise was that he was killed in the movie by Sebastian Shaw, and fans never got the chance to see the character develop. Interestingly, he had very similar powers to Metamorpho, who appears in Gunn's Superman, but obviously did not have a happy ending.

Edi Gathegi recently revealed to THR that he had expressed concerns about the script to his agent and how he felt that killing the only male Black character halfway into X-Men: First Class was a cliche thing to do. He said, 'So I read the script, and I called my agents to say, 'Hey, listen, I have a problem with the fact that this character is the only Black character in the film aside from Zoë Kravitz's character. I am also the only mutant who meets an untimely demise halfway through the film.' It was 2009 at the time, and I was like, 'Killing the Black guy first is so played out. I can't do this.'' Edi added that he was told that the character's untimely death was part of a larger plan and he would return in the later films in the franchise, but nothing of the sort ever happened, which the actor expressed came as a 'surprise' to him.
Now all these years later, Edi has made peace with the studios' decision and is currently bearing the fruits of his incredible portrayal of Mr Terrific. Fighting alongside Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) as the Justice Gang, Edi stole the show with his sarcastic quips, entertaining fight sequences and an air of domination. He added, 'With X-Men, the message that I received as an actor and as a man of colour in this world is you can be the most powerful mutant in the world, and they'll never let you reach your full potential. Whereas with Mister Terrific in Superman, the message that I'm receiving is you can be one of the most intelligent characters in the universe, and you can make a difference. You can help save the world. It's a different level of conversation.'

Sony Bravia 2 Mark II TV review: A flagship-level upgrade for your living room

Rating: 4/5 As the technology in the TV space evolves, the arrival of a new television model always sparks curiosity, promising advancements that could redefine our viewing experiences. Sony has been among those brands that has historically been synonymous with TVs, among other products, thanks to the inclusion of the latest technology. The company recently launched the Sony Bravia 2 Mark II which is positioned as an evolution from its predecessors, representing more than a mere incremental update. The Sony Bravia 2 Mark II is packed with design innovations, and brings along performance enhancements over its predecessor as well as some smart capabilities. Sony emphasises that the new TV promises an enhanced overall user experience and performance at a price starting at Rs 69,990 for the 43-inch variant (on the website). The company also noted that the Bravia 2 Mark II's advancements are built upon four fundamental pillars: design, immersive audio capabilities, intelligent smart features and intuitive user interaction. We used the TV, and here's our take on the overview of these advancements. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable. Please help! Ketto Donate Now Undo Sony Bravia 2 Mark II: Design and display Modern TV design has evolved to integrate into contemporary living spaces, and Sony Bravia 2 Mark II falls true to this philology. The television features a 'flush surface', or in simpler words, a 'bezel-less" display that aims to minimise visual distractions and maximise the screen-to-body ratio. This design essentially means that you get a sense of a bigger picture that appears to extend to the very edges of the TV, effectively dissolving the boundary between the screen and the surrounding environment. Complementing this, the 'floating design' concept makes the screen appear to hover, significantly reducing the visual bulk of the television and contributing to a more elegant appeal. The screen is fitted with a slim T-shape blade stand so there's minimal distraction when you're watching the TV. We think that the best way to get it fixed on a wall for maximum viewing comfort. A standard tech in Sony's upper-range TVs is X-Protection PRO and Bravia 2 Mark II also get it. This protects the TV from dust, humidity, power surges and lightning strikes. Coming to the display, the TV gets a 4K TV panel with 3,840 x 2,160 pixels resolution and 50Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, there's a 4K Processor X1 that keeps things smooth, up and running. Other features that complement the vibrant display include Dynamic Contrast Enhancer, Live Colour Technology and Rich Colour Enhancer. As their names suggest, they elevate the viewing experience when you are watching a 'dull' video. The TV improves the appearance of older, lower-quality videos, making them look sharper. For instance, when we watched the 1993 film Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama on YouTube during our review, the TV's technology enhanced the video, making it appear more detailed and visually pleasing. The 4K X-Reality PRO feature is key to this quality improvement. It is to be noted that while it upgrades the picture, it doesn't completely transform the original low-resolution content. Another notable feature is Motionflow XR 200, which ensures smooth on-screen motion. This technology reduces blur in fast-paced content, like high-speed chases or car racing games, keeping the action clear and detailed. During our review, we found that a brightly-lit room caused problems because of the reflective nature of the screen. This glare can lead to eye strain, fatigue and headaches for some users, making extended use a bit uncomfortable. Sony Bravia 2 Mark II: Sound and smart features While visual fidelity is top-notch, with Bravia 2 Mark II, Sony aims to deliver an 'immersive entertainment experience' and for that, the company is complementing the video capabilities with advanced audio features. It gets a 10W + 10W speaker setup, (Open Baffle Speakers). The television boasts comprehensive support for industry-leading audio technologies, including Dolby Atmos, Dolby Audio and DTS. Dolby Atmos is particularly notable for its ability to create a multi-dimensional soundscape, allowing individual sounds to be precisely placed and moved around and above the viewer. Furthermore, DTS support guarantees compatibility with a broad range of high-fidelity audio formats. During our review duration, we found that this Sony TV worked best with content that has 5.1 audio support. Notably, the volume level drops a bit but there's an increase in audio quality. For example, during a scene in Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge , where characters who are under water are being pulled up using a chain. The audio tech in the Sony TV allows for easy distinction of all sound layers. For example, chain sounds, water effects, characters' dialogues and the musical score are all individually identifiable, without any one element drowning out another. In the dogfight scene from Top Gun: Maverick , the sound output effectively combines multiple explosions, the musical score, and the chaotic sounds of fighter planes. This layering creates a dramatic and intense auditory experience. Coming to the one of the most important parts and often overlooked feature: the television remote control that serves as a crucial interface that significantly impacts daily user satisfaction. For the Bravia 2 Mark II, Sony has introduced a significant upgrade in the form of the Premium Eco Remote with shortcut keys for YouTube, Netflix and Crunchyroll – a highly popular streaming service for anime and manga enthusiasts. Underpinning the TVs smart capabilities is the Google TV operating system. This platform offers a user-friendly interface, personalised content recommendations and easy integration with various Google services. It's like an extension of your Android phone on a TV. Features such as Google Assistant enable effortless voice control for navigation and content search. Complementing these features is Sony's exclusive Bravia Core streaming service. Bravia Core provides access to high-quality streaming content, including titles optimised with IMAX Enhanced and DTS audio, delivering a premium cinematic experience tailored specifically for Sony televisions. A key highlight for modern consumers, particularly gamers, is the inclusion of HDMI 2.1 ports that support 4K resolution at a 120Hz refresh rate, ensuring ultra-smooth and fluid gameplay. If you own a PlayStation, this TV is a treat to eyes. It also incorporates Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), which synchronizes the display's refresh rate with the console's output, eliminating screen tearing. Furthermore, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) automatically switches the television into a low-latency mode when a gaming signal is detected. In terms of wireless capabilities, the Bravia 2 Mark II includes standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Verdict The Sony Bravia 2 Mark II delivers on its promise of a 'level up' in home entertainment. Starting at Rs 69,990, the TV stands out through its innovative design, featuring a flush, bezel-less display paired with equally immersive audio which is powered by Dolby Atmos and DTS support. The user experience is significantly enhanced by the Premium Eco Remote with shortcut keys for popular streaming services. The Bravia 2 Mark II's comprehensive suite of integrated high-end capabilities kinda justifies its price point. The value proposition lies in its ability to deliver a holistic experience. Now the question is, 'Should you buy it?'. This TV is a notable upgrade in terms of audio and video capabilities. If you're in the market for a new television, we recommend considering this model, especially since TVs are a long-term investment. For those who prioritise the latest technology, it's a top choice for a relatively uncompromised viewing experience. AI Masterclass for Students. Upskill Young Ones Today!– Join Now

James Gunn reacts to viral Batman makeover theory; teases Clayface horror, triple Lantern chaos, and Peacemaker 2

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is now gearing up for the DCU's interconnected future, following the successful run of Superman. In a recent conversation with CBS, Gunn let out a sigh of relief, saying David Corenswet's reboot hit all three marks: audiences, critics, and the box office, after he spent three years building it. Now, Gunn's teasing Batman's arrival in The Brave and the Bold, but stayed cagey on whether we might see the Dark Knight even earlier. For now, he's got other heroes to roll out, starting with Peacemaker season 2, which drops next. Also read: Superman star Rachel Brosnahan says a 'witch' helped her lift a 10-year 'travel curse' ahead of movie promotion: 'I made her sign an NDA' Gunn didn't reveal too much about Batman, but he didn't shut the door on fan theories either. In an extended interview with the outlet, when asked if Batman would be donning a new costume, perhaps something different from the traditional black and grey, Gunn dodged, laughing and responding, 'I have no idea what Batman's going to wear.' He instead switched the topic to what he does know for sure is what's immediately ahead in the DCU. 'Peacemaker Season 2, which arrives in a month and is directly tied to events in Superman, with some overlapping characters,' he said. Following that, the timeline includes Supergirl, Lanterns (featuring Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner), and Clayface, which the Superman hitmaker described as a full-blown horror film set within the same universe. Further, Gunn emphasised that gone are the days of the old DCU; his version won't follow a one-size-fits-all formula. 'Each film will reflect the unique vision of its creators. There's not a company style,' he said. 'Just like comics, every story can be tonally different.' While Gunn neither confirmed nor denied the Batman makeover rumours, he definitely added fuel to fan theories that have been making rounds for months. Over the years, around 11 live-action Batmen have worn the Caped Crusader's iconic look. In an earlier interview with CBR, Gunn said, 'You know, there's no decisions made about the costume at all yet. I do [like the blue-and-gray Batsuit]! But I like the other versions, too. I like many different versions. I'm a Batman superfan. And so I like all the different versions of the Batman suit.' Also read: Superman: James Gunn's idea of an India-coded country is regressive and riddled with stereotypes; the Man of Steel wouldn't stand for it But he did hint at the trunks. 'I didn't know the trunks were going to be that important until I took this job,' he said, revealing that the first thing people asked when he got onboard DCU was what he planned to do with them. Fans have been speculating that Gunn and Andy Muschietti might shake things up costume-wise, but that'll only become clear once the film rolls. There's already buzz around patterns, a different colour palette, new materials, and details like longer ears and lenses,' doing the rounds online. As for Batman, beyond the costume chatter and release timeline, Gunn dropped something more telling, how this new take pushes back against the whole 'government puppet' label. He pointed out how Batman has traditionally seen Superman as a tool of the establishment, especially in The Dark Knight Returns. But now that Superman's stepping out of line and making moves on his own, he's starting to align with Batman's values more. 'Usually, Superman and Batman have different ways of doing things, but they're best friends. That's something we think a lot about for the DCU,' Gunn said. So one thing's clear, fans will get a very different dynamic between the two going forward.

Is James Gunn Taking A Dig At Marvel With Superman's Pocket Universes?

James Gunn's Pocket Universe in Superman movie is small, unstable and carefully created, different from the complex multiverse seen in Marvel movies. James Gunn's latest Superman movie has made a strong impact at the box office and introduced fresh ideas to the new DC Universe. One of the most interesting parts is the use of Pocket Universes. While this idea comes from DC comics, Gunn changed it a bit to make the version in this movie special. These worlds are small, unstable and carefully created, different from the complex multiverse seen in Marvel movies. Some fans wonder if Gunn was also taking a jab at the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). A large part of the new Superman movie takes place inside a strange and hidden pocket dimension. This space is controlled by Lex Luthor and his team of scientists from LuthorCorp. Inside, they keep many metahumans trapped for their own use. It's not just a random world, it's built with purpose. Interestingly, a small clue was shown in the first trailer of Peacemaker Season 2. In that trailer, John Cena's character, Chris Smith, comes face to face with a different version of himself in this pocket. James Gunn appears to be careful with the idea of the multiverse in his DCU. Unlike the MCU, which introduced endless timelines, surprise cameos and emotional twists with different versions of popular heroes, Gunn is keeping things simple. His focus is on telling one strong story at a time, rather than spreading out in every direction. Marvel's multiverse once felt exciting, but now some fans are starting to feel tired of all the chaos. Still, many are curious to see how Marvel will wrap it all up in the next Avengers film, expected in 2026. In the new Superman movie, Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, creates a deadly plan using the trapped mutants from the Pocket Universe to ruin Man of Steel's image and finally end his life. The final showdown happens at Luthor's main base, where Mr Terrific helps Kal El by shutting down the portal and protecting the city from falling apart. In their intense face off, Luthor tells Superman that he wants to destroy him, not because he's a threat, but because he's jealous. While the MCU is filled with timelines, variants and crossover events, James Gunn's approach is more focused. The DC Universe focuses on character growth. Instead of packing in endless twists and cameos, Gunn is giving his characters more space to breathe. With this approach, the filmmaker may be starting a superhero world that is told in the clearest way yet.
