38 alleged human trafficking victims rescued, 3 suspects nabbed in Zamboanga City
In a press briefing, PNP chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said authorities on August 9 intercepted ML J-Sayang which was heading to Taganak Island, Tawi-Tawi.
'Nailigtas ang 38 na individual—22 kababaihang nasa hustong taong gulang, dalawang menor na edad na babae, 12 na kalalakihang nasa hustong taong gulang, at dalawang menor na lalaki,' Torre said.
(We rescued 38 individuals—22 adult women, two underage girls, 12 adult men, and two underage boys.)
These individuals, who came from different areas across the country, are now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
Three suspected illegal recruiters were arrested in the operation, coming from Antipolo City, Northern Samar, and Zamboanga City.
According to Torre, authorities believed that the rescued individuals were going to be transported through the 'backdoor' route to Sabah, Malaysia. — Joviland Rita/BM, GMA Integrated News

Crime rate down 7.75% over 10-month period — PNP chief Torre
Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III said Tuesday the country's crime rate went down 7.75% from August 2024 to June 2025 compared to the same period of the previous year. In his speech during the 124th Police Service Anniversary celebration at Camp Crame attended by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., Torre said the number of crime incidents decreased from 192,677 to 177,735. "Crime incidents dropped by 7.75% with a total of 177,735 incidents from August 2024 to June 2025 compared to 192,677 from the same period of previous year," Torre said. "This significant decline clearly reflects the effectiveness of our intensified anti-criminality operations, especially our increased police presence across the country," he added. In the drive against illegal drugs, Torre said a total of 153,609 operations have been conducted from July 1, 2022 to August 10, 2025. Anti-drug operations resulted in 190,568 arrests and confiscation of contraband worth some P54.6 billion, according to Torre. "This represents a 258% increase compared to the same period of 2016 to 2019. A testament to our bloodless campaign that decisively targets both high-value and street-level offenders," Torre said. Torre said the PNP is also seeking to address cyber crimes, human trafficking, kidnapping, and even fake news. With regard to internal cleansing, Torre said that over the past year, a total of 3,413 members of its personnel were sanctioned. Under the PNP's newly implemented Five-Minute Response Policy, Torre said police responded to 94% of the 3,574 emergency calls within five minutes from June 2 to August 10. "As we mark our 124th year, the question before us is not what have we done? But what more can we do?" Torre said. "As the Chief of the Philippine National Police, I call on every officer and personnel to continue embodying the true spirit of public service. DILG prohibits employees, LGUs from online gambling

President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Tuesday vowed that his administration would never condone wrongdoings among police ranks, noting that rogue cops will be dealt with in accordance with the law. During the 124th Police Service Anniversary held at the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame, Marcos said part of the threat to national security are the police officers who had committed wrongdoings and abuse of power. ''Huwag din natin kalimutan na bahagi ng banta sa seguridad ang mga nasa hanay na bumabaluktot mismo ng ating layunin. Aanhin pa ang pinakamodernong kagamitan kung may ilang pulis pa rin ang umaabuso sa kapangyarihan?'' Marcos said during the 124th Police Service Anniversary. (Let us not forget that part of the security threats are the rouge cops who do not abide by their duty. What is the use of the most modern assets if there are some police scalawags?) ''We will continue to investigate and hold these people accountable within the bounds of the law. We do not condone wrongdoings among those who are sworn to uphold the law and to protect the citizens of our Republic. Though the rate of crime incidents had gone down, Marcos said the figure alone could not allay public fear. ''As public servants, we do not ask people to celebrate statistics if their experiences tell a different story,'' Marcos said. ''We must regain the trust of the public through more decisive and responsive actions. I believe the PNP is now on its right track,'' the President said. Further, Marcos said the government would continue to modernize the PNP as criminals, at present, use technology for their illegal schemes. So far, the police force has drones and other advanced technologies that complement police operations, enabling the cops' capabilities to protect, to monitor, and to respond with greater precision. ''But technology will never replace the importance of your presence on the ground. These tools are only effective as the men and women who wield those tools,'' Marcos said.
