Free bus travel in Andhra for girls, women, transgender persons from Aug 15
'Beneficiaries include all girls, women, and transgender persons with domicile status in Andhra Pradesh, subject to presenting valid identity proof,' Dande said in a government order.
The scheme will be implemented using the existing fleet of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), with additional buses to be procured based on demand, he added. Free travel will apply only to Pallevelugu, Ultra Pallevelugu, City Ordinary, Metro Express, and Express services.
It will not cover non-stop services, interstate operations, contract carriages, chartered services, or package tours. Saptagiri Express, Ultra Deluxe, Super Luxury, Star Liner, and all air-conditioned services are also excluded, he said.
For passenger safety, the government is considering equipping staff with body-worn cameras and installing CCTV cameras in all buses.
Bus stations will see upgraded amenities such as fans, chairs, drinking water, and toilets.
Dande said the procurement of electric buses and extending the scheme to them could also be considered, subject to Cabinet approval.
Beneficiaries will receive zero-fare tickets, which APSRTC will submit to the government for reimbursement.
Free bus travel for women was a poll promise of the TDP-led NDA government ahead of the 2024 elections.
The scheme is estimated to cost Rs 1,942 crore annually—about Rs 162 crore a month—and aims to empower women by improving access to education, jobs, and mobility, Minister K Parthasarathy had earlier said.

AP high court observes incentives to IT companies should focus on employment generation over land loss
Vijayawada: The high court on Wednesday observed that giving incentives to IT companies should be seen in the broader perspective of employment generation instead of losing money on land allocations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The High Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur and Justice Ravi Cheemalapati, observed that in the absence of incentives, companies will choose cities like Hyderabad and Bengaluru. The bench further noted that Andhra Pradesh will remain an agrarian state without considerable investments in industry. One N N Grace, President of the Society for Protection of Civil Properties and Environment, Visakhapatnam chapter, moved the High Court with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), challenging the land allotments made to Cognizant at Rs 0.99 per acre. Jada Sravan, who argued on her behalf, said that the land allotted to Cognizant is valued at Rs 1109 crore, but the state govt allotted it for nothing. He said that the sale of land is not permissible according to APIIC rules. Arguing on behalf of the state govt, special govt pleader S Pranati said that the land allotments have been made in accordance with the state industrial policy. She sought time to file counters in all petitions pertaining to land allotments. Considering the arguments on both sides, the High Court tagged the matter with other petitions. Similar petitions were filed earlier, challenging the land allotments to TCS and LuLu Group.

Penance over, Bains pledges funds for road improvement near sacred sites
1 2 Amritsar: Punjab cabinet minister Harjot Singh Bains on Wednesday offered ardas at Akal Takht to mark the completion of his 'tankhah' (religious atonement) ordered for a song and dance event organised to commemorate the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur in Srinagar. Harjot pledged Rs 20 lakh from his discretionary funds, according to directives of the Sikh clergy. He also offered a month's salary as a minister for cleaning and improvement of roads leading to the birthplace of Guru Tegh Bahadur, Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, Gurdwara Kotha Sahib (associated with the ninth Guru), and Gurdwara Baba Bakala Sahib. Bains said he would also make every possible effort — both personally and through the govt — for the beautification of the areas surrounding the sacred places blessed by the footsteps of Guru Tegh Bahadur. On July 26, two days after the Srinagar event, Akal Takht summoned Bains to appear before the Sikh high priests on Aug 6 and explain why a tribute to the martyrdom of a Guru began with music and entertainment. In its 'tankhah', the Sikh clergy ordered road repairs and infrastructure development for the first time. Speaking to mediapersons outside the information centre of the Golden Temple, Bains said, "Whatever I am today is because of the blessings of Guru Sahib. I have nothing to be proud of. The tankhah assigned to me by Akal Takht was a divine command for me, and with Guru Sahib's grace, it has been completed. I have offered a prayer at the feet of Guru Sahib seeking forgiveness for my mistakes and sought blessings, strength and wisdom to serve the Panth, the community, the country, Punjab, and humanity. ‘Have culled 2,800 stray dogs during municipality tenure'—JD(S) MLC boasts in Karnataka assembly
'If our children or those of the Supreme Court judges face such problems, won't we take such a decision? When I was the head of the municipal council, I got 2,800 dogs to eat (poisoned) meat, killed them and buried them under coconut trees,' he said at the ongoing monsoon session of the Karnataka legislature. The statement was made Tuesday in which he went on to assert that he was ready to go to jail to protect children who were targeted by stray dogs. Bengaluru: Janata Dal (Secular) MLC has claimed that he helped cull 2,800 stray dogs and buried them under trees when he was head of the municipal body in Karnataka's Chikmagalur. The statement has drawn backlash in the backdrop of the Supreme Court's order to shift all stray dogs to shelters in Delhi-National Capital (NCR) region triggering anger and debate across the country. On Wednesday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) said that he would look into the issue after he was apprised of the order to shift all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR region to shelters within the next eight weeks. Meanwhile, Bhojegowda suggested that 10 dogs must be released into every animal lover's home after the government expressed helplessness. 'We are witnessing dog bite cases daily and victims are being hospitalised. If someone opposes removal of stray dogs from the streets, let the government leave a few dogs in their compounds to make them understand the reality,' said Bhojegowda. 'What will they do if a stray bites their children?' he said. The JD(S) MLC also suggested that the Karnataka government file a petition with the SC to reconsider its earlier orders that only allowed for vaccination and neutering of stray dogs. 'Take a decision and put a petition in the Supreme Court, let's see. Let it be the first time that any state has asked the SC this,' he said. Several legislators from across parties were heard chipping into the debate, backing Bhojegowda, and mocking the Karnataka government for giving 'Biryani Bhagya' for dogs. The reference was to a July order by the Bengaluru city corporation that unveiled a Rs 2.88 crore annual programme to feed chicken rice to around 5,000 stray dogs. This would amount to 367 grams of chicken rice per day at a cost of Rs 22 per dog, costing around Rs 36 lakh for each of the eight zones in the IT capital. Like Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, who made a passionate plea against the SC order, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, too, took the same line on the matter. 'Treating stray dogs as a nuisance to be 'removed' is not governance – it is cruelty. Humane societies find solutions that protect people and animals. Sterilisation, vaccination, and community care work. Fear-driven measures only create more suffering, not safety,' the CM posted on 'X'.
