But not everyone was on board. One of the league's most outspoken voices, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, made headlines when she questioned two of the new markets.
'I do think that Miami would have been a great one,' Cunningham said. 'Everyone loves Florida. Nashville is an amazing city. Kansas City, amazing opportunity. But man, I don't know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or Cleveland.'
Cunningham and the Indiana Fever were in action Saturday against the Los Angeles Sparks. After pulling off an 89-87 win, the Sparks wasted no time roasting Cunningham with a perfect jab on social media.
"List of cities Indiana has beef with: Detroit, Cleveland, Los Angeles."

That marked the second win for the Sparks at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in just over a week. Their previous victory came on June 26, when they beat Indiana 85-75.
The Fever were once again without Caitlin Clark, who missed her fifth straight game due to a groin injury. In her absence, Aliyah Boston stepped up with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Indiana.

For the Sparks, Azura Stevens posted 21 points and 12 rebounds, while veteran guard Kelsey Plum added 20 points in the win.
As for Cunningham, she played 22 minutes and scored four points.
The Fever return to action Wednesday when they host the Golden State Valkyries. The Sparks are back home Thursday against the Minnesota Lynx.

Turner's 5 hit-day, Schwarber's power lead Phillies to sweep of Mariners

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Trea Turner had five hits and a pair of RBIs, Kyle Schwarber homered and drove in five runs, and the Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners with an 11-2 victory Wednesday. Turner has six multihit games in his last seven. He led off the game with a triple and collected four singles. Schwarber hit a National League-leading 45th homer and had an RBI double, a run-scoring single and a sacrifice fly. He leads the majors with 110 RBIs, a career high. Max Kepler had three hits, including a homer, and Bryson Stott had three hits and two RBIs for the Phillies, who have won four straight. Jesús Luzardo (12-6) struck out 12 in six innings. He allowed one run on three hits. Julio Rodríguez and Eugenio Suárez each hit solo homers for Seattle, which has lost five straight and seven of eight. Luis Castillo (8-7) allowed three runs on 10 hits in four innings. Major league home run leader Cal Raleigh went 0 for 4. Raleigh, with 47 homers, is one shy of matching the single-season record for home runs by a catcher. Key moment Reliever José Alvarado made his first appearance for Philadelphia after serving an 80-game suspension for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. He received an ovation from the crowd and pitched a perfect eighth inning, striking out Raleigh to end it. Key stat The Phillies scored 29 runs and compiled 48 hits in the three-game sweep of Seattle — their most hits in a 3-game span since 2007. Up next The Mariners return home to start a weekend series with the Athletics on Friday. Neither has named a starting pitcher. Philadelphia plays host to Washington for three games beginning Friday. RHP Taijuan Walker (4-6, 3.34 ERA) goes for the Phillies. The Nationals have not announced a starter. ___ AP MLB:

Never been a sinner, I never sinned: Phillies 11, Mariners 2

In the majority of his starts this season, Jesus Luzardo has been either very good or very bad. Facing the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday afternoon, the Phillies got the very good version. His six dominant innings, combined with an offense that constantly had runners on base and eventually got a lot of them home, led the Phillies to an 11-2 win, and a sweep of the Mariners. In the first inning, it wasn't clear that we were getting the good Luzardo. Julio Rodriguez got the Mariners on the board first with this blast. It's hard to blame Luzardo too much for that one. If a guy is able to hit that pitch out, you tip your cap. The rest of the inning was more predictive as Luzardo struck out the other three batters he faced. Striking out batters was the theme of his day as he racked up 12 of them in his six innings. The Mariners only managed two more hits against him, and one of those was erased by a pickoff. For a while, it looked like the Phillies' offense was going to waste Luzardo's outing. They were racking up lots of base hits but didn't sequence them especially well. Trea Turner led off the game with a triple and scored on a Kyle Schwarber sacrifice fly, which was great, but the Phillies went on to leave two runners on base in the frame. In the second, Bryson Stott had a splendid at bat, ending in an RBI double. But once again, the Phillies left two runners on and failed to record a big inning. Then despite getting two hits in the third, a double play prevented them from scoring any runs. Max Kepler made it 3-1 when he led off the fourth with a home run, but an additional two hits and a walk in the inning resulted in zero runs thanks to another double play. Frustrations were rising when the Phillies left two runners on base in both the fifth and sixth inning. It certainly felt like those missed opportunities were going to cost them, especially when David Robertson relieved Luzardo and gave up a home run to Eugenio Suarez. (And it was the right decision to remove Luzardo.) Those frustrations ended in the seventh. With two men on, Bryson Stott (3-5 on the day) singled one home. The floodgates opened. Trea Turner (5-6) hit an infield single to score another run. Schwarber's single combined with an error brought two more in, and Bryce Harper chipped in an RBI single to make it 9-2. Kyle Schwarber's two run home run in the eighth felt like it was just rubbing it in the face of a Mariners' pitching staff that spent the last three days being abused by the Phillies' hitters. With a large lead, it was a good time for Jose Alvarado to make his return. The lefty pitched a clean eighth inning in his first appearance after his 80-game suspension. That wraps up one of the best series the Phillies have played all season. They received three strong performances from their starting pitchers, and the offense largely had its way with what is normally a good Mariners pitching staff. Hopefully, the off day on Thursday doesn't halt their momentum, and they can run similarly roughshod over the Nationals this weekend.

Caitlin Clark misses another practice as Fever call her prospect of return 'status quo'

Two-time All-Star guard Caitlin Clark missed another practice with her injured right groin Wednesday, and coach Stephanie White still does not have a timetable for her star's return. Clark has not played since hurting her groin in the final minute of a game July 15 at Connecticut. Three different muscle injuries this season have forced Clark to sit out 22 games including the last 13 — and All-Star weekend in Indianapolis. The worst part: White is simply hoping Clark returns for some of her team's last nine regular-season games. Indiana also lost three other key players with season-ending injuries over the last two weeks. "Until she can get into practice and until you guys see her in practice, it's really status quo,' White said after Wednesday's workout at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Clark never missed a game in college and played in every Fever game last season when she won the WNBA's Rookie of the Year Award. Indiana spent the offseason going all-in on putting a stronger supporting cast around the former Iowa star and those moves appear to have paid off by keeping the Fever in playoff position without Clark and the rest. But Clark still has a role with the Fever. 'Caitlin's still there, like that hasn't wavered,' All-Star guard Kelsey Mitchell said. 'And I think even though they're not in the lineup, we still feel everyone's presence.' ___ AP WNBA:
