Kharge accuses BJP of betraying Chhattisgarh, says Congress will fight back

Hans India07-07-2025
Raipur: At a charged public gathering in Raipur titled 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Samvidhan', Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge launched a sweeping attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led central government, accusing them of betraying the people of Chhattisgarh and undermining the Constitution.
He accused them of undermining constitutional values, dismantling welfare schemes, and failing to address pressing national crises. In a speech marked by sharp political barbs and emotional appeals, the Congress chief positioned the Congress as the defender of India's democratic fabric and the voice of the marginalised.
Kharge alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government is propped up by allies like Nitish Kumar and Chandrababu Naidu, claiming that Modi is 'walking on the legs of Nitish and Naidu' and could collapse without their support anytime. He accused the BJP of working in tandem with these allies to exploit the poor, while asserting that Congress workers are prepared to sacrifice their lives to protect the rights of the people.
He criticised the BJP for failing to implement the reservation Bill passed by the previous Congress government, which aimed to expand quotas for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.
'We worked to give reservations to ST, SC, and OBC, but till date there is no trace of the Bill,' Kharge said, calling it a betrayal of social justice. He also took aim at the BJP's economic promises, reminding the crowd that Modi had pledged to provide LPG cylinders at Rs 500 if elected. 'Today, the price is beyond Rs 900,' he said, adding that during Congress rule, even a Rs 1 hike in petrol prices would spark public protests—something he described as a 'trick' designed by the BJP to discredit the UPA government.
He condemned PM Modi's absence from an all-party meeting convened after the Pahalgam terror attack, despite being invited. 'We all attended, but Modi did not,' he said. He also lambasted the Prime Minister for not visiting Manipur, where ethnic violence has claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands.
'Modi is visiting 50 countries but is not able to go to Manipur so far, why?' Kharge asked. 'Rapes are happening, people are being killed, houses are burning—but he hasn't gone there even once.' In a pointed reference to recent remarks from the RSS, Kharge read aloud from the BJP's own constitution, highlighting that the word 'secular' is enshrined in it. Without naming anyone, he criticised those who have called for the removal of the term from the Indian Constitution. 'They want to erase the word that protects the poor and underprivileged from all sections of society,' he said, warning that such efforts threaten the very foundation of India's democracy.
Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Congress leader Sachin Pilot echoed Kharge's sentiments, criticising the BJP for dismantling welfare schemes, failing to provide employment, and neglecting farmers' needs. Baghel warned that the future of schoolchildren is at risk, while Pilot emphasised that the Congress would fight the 2028 elections with the same unity and resolve that brought them to power in the past.
The rally marked a renewed push by the Congress to reclaim political ground in Chhattisgarh, positioning itself as the guardian of constitutional values and the voice of the voiceless.

Kerala told to start land acquisition with its 50% project cost: Vaishnaw on Sabarimala rail project

Land acquisition for the long-pending Angamali-Sabarimala Railway line, also called Sabari Rail project, is likely to begin soon as recent discussions between Kerala government and Railways Ministry indicate a renewed push to implement the project. In a written reply to questions from Congress's Jebi Mather Hisham in RS Friday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that in a recent meeting with CM Pinarayi Vijayan, the state government has been requested to begin land acquisition by using its share of 50% of the project cost. Vaishnaw said that once land acquisition by the state starts, work can proceed further. The 111-km Angamali-Sabarimala railway line project via Erumeli was sanctioned in 1997-98. It is among the crucial railway projects in Kerala, which is expected to cater to the pilgrims visiting Sabrimala temple. Erumeli is the gateway to the famous hill temple. However, only the work on Angamali-Kaladi (7 km) line and long lead works on Kaladi-Perumbavoor (10 km) were taken up so far. Vaishnaw said that further works could not be taken up due to protests against land acquisition and fixing of alignment of the line, court cases against the project and inadequate support from the state government. The project's estimated cost has been revised to `3,801 crore by Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) and submitted to Kerala government in December, 2023. In August 2024, the Kerala government gave its conditional consent to the estimate. Later, the Railways Ministry asked the state government to give unconditional consent for sharing the cost. The ministry also asked the Kerala government to enter into a tripartite MoU among the state government, Ministry of Railways and RBI for the project. 'However, in a memorandum submitted by Kerala government to the Railway Minister on June 3, 2025, it has been intimated that the Kerala government does not agree to enter into tripartite agreement,' Vaishnaw said. An MoU was inked between the state and the Railways Ministry in January 2016 but work could not be started due to ambiguity over financing and sharing of total cost. Public Outrage in Gadwal: Protesters Demand Immediate Arrest of Constable Raghunath Goud for Allegedly Cheating Dalit Woman

Gadwal: A wave of protests broke out in Jogulamba Gadwal district headquarters on Thursday, as several civil rights organizations, Dalit associations, and political leaders gathered in front of the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue demanding the immediate arrest of Constable Raghunath Goud. He is accused of cheating a Dalit woman named Priyanka from Palwancha town in Khammam district under the pretext of love and marriage. According to protestors, Raghunath Goud, who recently secured a job in the police department, had made false promises to Priyanka, convincing her of his intention to marry her. However, after obtaining his job, he reportedly rejected her citing her caste, referring to her as a 'low-caste SC (Madiga) woman,' and refused to fulfill his promise of marriage. The protesters, visibly outraged, accused the constable of manipulating the woman emotionally and socially, and demanded that a case be immediately registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. They called upon the authorities to arrest Raghunath Goud without delay and ensure justice for the victim. Representatives of Dalit organizations stated that such caste-based discrimination and exploitation should not be tolerated, especially by someone serving in a law enforcement role. They urged the district administration and police department to take strict and swift action against the accused to uphold justice and prevent further erosion of trust in the system. The protest at Ambedkar Chowk drew participation from social activists, leaders of Dalit and caste-based associations, political party representatives, and local citizens, all united in their demand for accountability and justice for Priyanka. The district police have not yet issued an official statement on the matter. However, public pressure continues to mount, and further demonstrations have been warned if the authorities fail to act promptly.

This sharp retort came in response to Revanth's recent suggestion that the NDA govt consider BC leader Bandaru Dattatreya for the post of Vice President. Speaking to the media, Ramchander Rao launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing it of failing to constitute a national BC commission when it was in power. He also questioned the party's sincerity toward BC welfare, especially regarding its silence on the caste census data. He urged the state govt to stop shifting the onus of BC reservations to the Centre and instead implement the 42% reservation in local body elections themselves. He demanded full disclosure on procurement and accountability in the case, alleging deliberate concealment by the authorities. On the Kaleshwaram project, he flagged a serious concern—₹150 crore was found with a single officer, but no political figure was held accountable. He also hit out at the Congress govt's handling of the HYDRAA initiative. "Instead of building homes, they've demolished shelters of the poor in the name of HYDRAA. The project is a complete failure," he declared, predicting the govt's eventual collapse. Box Hyderabad: In a surprise announcement, BJP chief N Ramchander Rao said he would not contest the next election but would continue to serve the party.
