administration's tariff decision.

In gems & jewellery, orders from the US have declined by 70% since April 5 when the 10% baseline tariff came into effect, forcing the units in Mumbai's Santacruz Electronics Export Processing Zone (SEEPZ) to send about 50,000 contract workers on leave, said industry executives. But in Tamil Nadu's Tirupur, the knitwear capital of India, textile and apparel units are flooded with enquiries and orders as US buyers seek to lift stocks before Trump takes his next call on reciprocal tariffs. While he has suspended the additional reciprocal tariff of 26% imposed on India for 90 days, the tariff on China, the largest supplier of garments, was increased to 145%.
Exporters in the two sectors elsewhere in the country too have seen similar trends.
US importers bought jewellery, mostly studded, to create inventory as everyone was anticipating the reciprocal tariff to become effective from April 9, said Adil Kotwal, president of the SEEPZ Gems & Jewellery Manufacturers' Association. The US had previously levied a 5.5% on jewellery imports.
'Now the US buyers have gone on a wait-and-watch mode until the final tariff is announced after the 90 days,' he said. 'The exporting units in SEEPZ are now trying to step up deals with Saudi Arabia, Europe and Australia. But the volume of shipments to these three countries cannot be compared with the US, which is a huge market for us.'
Nearly $2 billion worth of jewellery is exported from SEEPZ, Mumbai, annually. 'In the current fiscal year, exports will be halved,' said Kotwal.
India's gems and jewellery exports totalled $28.5 billion in fiscal 2025, down 11.72% from FY24. The US accounted for $10 billion of India's FY25 exports.
The situation is different in the textile and apparel industry.
Because of the high US tariffs on China, many US buyers are looking at India as an alternative sourcing nation and Tirupur units are getting a lot more enquiries than previously from global brands, said KM Subramanian, president of the Tirupur Exporters Association. 'The US buyers are keen to lift the garments at the earliest.'
The US imports about $120 billion of textile and apparel annually with China accounting for a quarter of this at $30 billion, said Sanjay Jain, managing director of TT Ltd that exports textile and knitted garments. 'This $30 billion worth of textiles and garments will have to be mostly sourced from other countries, which gives India a great opportunity. Apart from garments, home textiles is a sector in the US, where India can make its presence felt,' he said.

US-UAE multi-billion dollar AI data campus deal far from finalised, sources say

A multi-billion dollar deal to build one of the world's largest data centre hubs in the United Arab Emirates with U.S. technology is far from being concluded due to persistent concerns around security, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The U.S. and the wealthy Gulf state unveiled the massive artificial intelligence campus project set to contain a cluster of powerful data centres during President Donald Trump's two-day visit to Abu Dhabi last month. The planned 10-square-mile (26-sq-km) site is being funded by G42, an Emirati state-linked tech firm that is driving the development of its artificial intelligence industry. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Public Speaking Course for Children Planet Spark Book Now Undo Technology giants Nvidia, OpenAI, Cisco, and Oracle , along with Japan's SoftBank, are working with G42 to build the first phase, known as Stargate UAE, set to go online in 2026. The project, which plans to use advanced Nvidia AI chips , has been promoted by Trump officials as a win in steering Gulf states toward US technology over Chinese alternatives. Live Events But according to five sources briefed on the project, US officials have yet to determine the security conditions to export the advanced chips or how the agreement with the Gulf state will be enforced, leaving the deal far from resolved. But U.S. officials remain cautious about the UAE's close relationship with China, four of the sources said, noting that the concerns are consistent with those raised during both the Biden administration and Trump's first term, primarily around the Gulf state's reliability as a strategic partner. The sources did not specify whether new evidence had emerged, but said existing concerns remain unresolved. During Trump's first term, the UAE and other Gulf states moved forward with deploying Huawei 5G technology despite U.S. objections. Others in the administration also doubt whether the UAE, despite its intentions, can prevent U.S. technology from reaching Washington's adversaries, four of the sources said. A White House spokesperson referred Reuters to the Commerce Department, which did not respond to a request for comment. Neither did the UAE government. Four sources said the U.S. administration had no clear timeline for finalising the deal. Abu Dhabi would need to accept yet-to-be-defined U.S. controls on the technology, but it could also request amendments that may delay final approval, they said. Two sources said U.S. controls would likely prohibit the use of Chinese technology and restrict the employment of Chinese nationals at the site that is being referred to as an AI campus. The administration remains committed to concluding the deal, four of the sources said, but noted there was opposition among Republicans and Democrats over concerns regarding the UAE's ties with China. Stargate UAE is scheduled to come online next year with an estimated 100,000 advanced Nvidia chips. The 1-gigawatt project will use Nvidia's Grace Blackwell GB300 systems, currently the most advanced AI server that Nvidia offers. Although smaller than the U.S. state of Maine, the UAE is a influential Middle Eastern player known for its strategic hedging that has seen it forge close ties with China and Russia. Last year, under pressure from the Biden administration, G42 ripped out Chinese hardware and sold its Chinese investments. In return, it gained better access to advanced American technology, while Microsoft acquired a $1.5 billion stake in G42. Nevertheless, major Chinese firms Huawei and Alibaba Cloud remain active in the Gulf state, and an organised AI chip smuggling ring to China has been tracked out of countries including the UAE. The Gulf state has also become a hub for companies evading sanctions imposed on Russia since 2022 over the war in Ukraine. The Trump administration has said that American companies would operate the Emirati-built data centres and offer "American-managed" cloud services throughout the region. The so-called AI campus in Abu Dhabi is supposed to eventually host 5 gigawatts worth of data centres.

The House of Representatives then votes to decide if he should be impeached. A simple majority is enough. If impeached, the President still stays in office until the Senate holds a trial, as per members act as prosecutors, the Chief Justice is the judge, and Senators are the jury. If two-thirds of Senators vote to convict, the President is removed. The Vice President then takes over as President. The decision can't be appealed in federal courts, as per the Britannica only three US Presidents having seen impeachment attempts till 2025, the record of POTUS being dragged to courts is few and far between. However, they can be taken to courts after being removed as well. Till now, only Donald Trump, Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson have witnessed impeachment proceedings. None were convicted, as stated in the Britannica means trying to remove the President from the House of Representatives can impeach him.

The feud led to Tesla's stock drop and a threat by the President to strip the billionaire of his huge government contracts. US President Donald Trump said "Oh it's okay," when asked about his very public breakup with former ally and donor Elon Musk, POLITICO reported. White House aides have, according to the outlet, also scheduled a call with Musk on Friday in the hope of diffusing the situation. Trump and Musk's unlikely political marriage exploded in a fiery public divorce Thursday, with the US president threatening to strip the billionaire of his huge government contracts. Trump said in a televised Oval Office diatribe that he was "very disappointed" after his former aide and top donor criticized his "big, beautiful" spending bill before Congress. The pair traded insults over social media, with Musk -- who was Trump's biggest campaign donor to the tune of $300 million -- claiming the Republican would not have won the 2024 election without his support. But Trump played down the feud during his brief interview with POLITICO on Thursday. "It's going very well, never done better," Trump told POLITICO before going on to tout his favorability ratings. The row could have major political and economic fallout, as shares in Musk's Tesla car company plunged and the South African-born tech tycoon vowed that he would end a critical US spaceship program.
