10 red carpet looks at Cannes that broke the rules in 2025
As well as being one of the biggest events in the world of film, the Cannes Film Festival is also a pretty important week in fashion.
Over the years, we have seen some incredible looks hit the red carpet at the prestigious celebration of cinema, but the 2025 event was dealt a devastating blow when it came to mind-boggling outfits.
Before the fest kicked off, new red carpet rules came into place that banned nudity and 'voluminous ensembles.'
In a statement, organisers said: 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival.'
They continued: 'Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted.
'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.'
Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the regulations were updated to reflect 'certain rules that have long been in effect.'
Rules are made to be broken, however, and a few celebrities did exactly that, touching down on the Cannes carpet in ensembles that were definitely close to the line…
Never one to shy away from a bold look, supermodel Leomie Anderson hit the Hights 2 Lowest red carpet in a rather revealing dress.
With her hair piled in sleep curls on her head, she wore a silver metal beaded high-neck gown that would have undoubtedly raised organisers' eyebrows.
The ensemble was almost entirely see-through, with the star wearing coordinating silver pants and nipple covers underneath in somewhat of an attempt to preserve some modesty.
She accessorised with a small black clutch bag and sparkling silver jewellery that matched the eye-catching piece.
Bella Hadid is no stranger to causing a stir on the Cannes red carpet, freeing the nipple on multiple occasions in statement looks.
This year, she was arguably more low-key in a black gown, but she still toed the line of the new rules with a thigh-high split in the backless number.
The custom Saint Laurent silk gown also had intricate detailing, as well as cut-outs on the side to show a little skin but in a more reserved fashion than is typical for the Hadid sister.
Even away from her legendary Halloween looks, Heidi Klum never fails to disappoint in the fashion department.
At the Cannes opening ceremony, she stunned in a unique pink floral dress with cascading ruffles emulating petals, including a very voluminous train.
It also included a daring side slit showing off her legs, somewhat defying the festival's nudity rule.
The Mission: Impossible cast broke the red carpet rules by stopping to take a selfie on the red carpet.
But that wasn't the only rule break at the premiere, as Pom Klementieff stepped out in a lilac plunge dress from Loewe.
She ditched her bra to show plenty of skin underneath, posing confidently despite unquestionably flouting the guidelines.
Like Bella's gown, it also included a high leg slit and straps across her back, creating a cut-out effect.
Julia Garner didn't exactly break the rules of the red carpet, but it was a daring look, prodding the limits of the nudity ban.
The Wolf Man star attended the opening ceremony in a sheer black Gucci gown that she appeared to be totally starkers underneath.
But we're sure bosses were thankful that wasn't actually the case, as she rocked a sequin-covered nude liner underneath to shield her body.
Halle Berry may have changed one of her looks to avoid being scolded for a long train, but a follow-up look at the 2025 Chopard Universe Dinner threw that consideration out the window.
The incredible maroon gown had an elegant, structured train that followed the Catwoman star.
It featured a structured red corset and yet another leg split, with the star accessorising with matching red heels and earrings.
Aishwarya Rai put in a stunning appearance on the red carpet for the History of Sound premiere, wearing a gown that was certainly close to the wire in terms of dress code.
The Bollywood icon is known as the Queen of Cannes, with this look proving exactly why.
Her elaborate ensemble paid homage to her heritage, with designer Manish Malhotra later revealing she and the actress were both aligned on a vision.
'I was very sure that I wanted her to wear something handwoven, something that takes India's textile heritage to the global stage.'
She wore a handwoven Kadwa Banarasi handloom saree in ivory, threaded with real silver and also featuring hints of rose gold.
As far as elaborate trains go, Wan QianHui took a major risk.
Attending the opening ceremony of Cannes 2025, the Chinese musical theatre star made the bold move of wearing a pastel yellow strapless number.
It was the very definition of business on top, party on the bottom, as the bodice flowed out into a multi-layered skirt complete with fur.
We can only imagine what a nightmare it was for her to walk through doorways.
Farhana Bodi was one of many stars going for a vibrant colour, rocking up at the opening ceremony in head-to-toe pink.
The UAE model clearly wanted to be anything but subtle, her custom blush pink dress by Atelier Zuhra surrounded by sculpted ruffles.
'I felt like a blingtastic Barbie last night,' she said afterwards.
'My look for Cannes 2025 is a love letter to unapologetic femininity and high fashion.'
Stella Maxwell knows how to work a risqué piece of clothing thanks to her successful modelling career. More Trending
And there's no doubt about whether her Cannes look pushed the boundaries, as she arrived for the Phoenician Scheme screening in a dress that we can't be sure organisers would be thrilled about.
The sheer black number featured strategically placed embroidered flowers and lace ruffles to cover her body, but she still showed plenty of skin.
Stella showcased her toned Victoria's Secret model figure, sweeping the floor with the train of her frock and adding to the sultry vibe with dark eye makeup.

X Factor band formed by Simon Cowell 'to reunite but without one member'
There's speculation that a group put together by the likes of Simon Cowell on the X Factor USA are reuniting, with the news coming seven years after Fifth Harmony took a hiatus There is speculation that a group put together on the X Factor are planning to reunite with all but one of its original members. They are said to have "big plans" for next year, which marks a significant anniversary in the band's history. Fifth Harmony was formed on the X Factor USA in 2012 after Ally Brooke, now 31, Camila Cabello, now 28, Dinah Jane, now 27, Lauren Jauregui, now 28, and Normani, now 28, auditioned as solo artists. The group went on to have success, with them releasing songs like Work From Home. Camila however left Fifth Harmony in 2016. Her four bandmates then continued as a group following her departure, before announcing two years later that they would be taking an indefinite hiatus to pursue solo projects. It's now been reported that Ally, Dinah, Lauren and Normani are in talks to reunite. The Hollywood Reporter suggests that the reunion won't include Camila, who has topped the charts with tracks like Havana since leaving the group. She had released two albums with the group, including their debut Reflection in 2015, and then later 7/27 the following year. Camila however had already left by the time the group's third album Fifth Harmony was released in 2017. It's reported that the reformed Fifth Harmony have big plans for next year, which marks the 10th anniversary of Camila's departure. It will also have been ten years since 7/27, which included Work from Home, one of their biggest tracks. According to the Hollywood Reporter, sources have said the group are working on a documentary about their return to the stage. The outlet adds that the potential project would "capture footage on a yet-to-be-announced tour". The news comes more than seven years on from Ally, Dinah, Lauren and Normani announcing in March 2018 that they would take a break from Fifth Harmony. Like former bandmate Camila, all four of them have released solo music since. At the time, the four members told fans: "Reflecting on the past six years since we started on X-Factor, we've realised just how far we've come and we appreciate everything so much, more now than ever. We've really had one hell of a memorable journey together and can't begin to express our gratitude to y'all for coming along with us on this wild ride!" "After six years going hard, non stop, we also realised that in order to stay authentic to ourselves and to you, we do need to take some time for now to go on a hiatus from Fifth Harmony in order to pursue solo endeavours." The statement continued: "We are all very excited and grateful to be able to take this time to learn and grow creatively and really find our footing as individuals. In doing this we are allowing ourselves to gain new experiences, strengths and perspectives that we can bring back to our Fifth Harmony family." Fifth Harmony concluded by writing at the time: "To our Harmonizers, thank you for everything we have been able to build as Fifth Harmony. With your love and encouragement we will continued to build on ourselves, support one another in everything we do, and keep making you proud, each other proud and ourselves proud. We do have some upcoming shows through the end of the years which will still happen as planned, and we can't wait!"

Music icon, 85, sues sexual assault accusers for $500,000,000
Legendary Motown singer Smokey Robinson has filed legal documents in Los Angeles seeking $500million (£392m) in damages from four former employees who have accused him of sexual assault. The lawsuit, which follows civil allegations brought by the women, was reported by which claims to have reviewed the legal filings submitted by Robinson's legal team. According to the publication Robinson, 85, and his wife Frances assert in the court documents that they consistently treated their household staff with respect and generosity. In the filings, Robinson strongly denies all allegations of sexual misconduct and claims that the plaintiffs were treated as 'extended family.' The documents reportedly outline various acts of kindness and support the couple extended to the women during their employment, including gifts such as concert tickets, vehicles, financial help for dental emergencies, and more. As part of the defense, Robinson submitted evidence intended to demonstrate the friendly nature of his relationship with the plaintiffs. One example cited in the documents is his attendance at the graduation dinner of a plaintiff's child and the gifting of a vacation. The Daily Mail also reports that Robinson's legal team submitted text messages sent by the plaintiffs, including messages such as 'Love you,' 'Happy birthday… God bless you,' and invitations to personal events. The countersuit reportedly includes claims of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, financial elder abuse, invasion of privacy, and civil conspiracy. Robinson is also asking the court to publicly identify the plaintiffs, arguing that media outlets have already begun reporting on the case, making anonymity impractical and unfair. As of now, no criminal charges have been reported, and the case remains a civil matter. The four former employees alleged repeated sexual assault and harassment at his Los Angeles-area home and other locations, including Las Vegas. The women, identified in the complaint as Jane Doe 1 through 4, also name Robinson's wife, Frances, as a defendant, accusing her of creating a hostile work environment and failing to intervene despite alleged prior knowledge of her husband's behavior. The plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial and at least $50 million in damages (approximately £40 million). In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, the couple's attorney, Christopher Frost, called the claims 'vile' and 'false,' describing the suit as 'an ugly method of trying to extract money.' He added that the defense plans to file a motion to dismiss based on inconsistencies and timeline issues in the complaint. According to the suit, the alleged assaults span from 2007 to 2024 and include claims of rape, sexual battery, false imprisonment, and failure to pay minimum wage. The women allege a pattern of predatory behavior and emotional abuse, claiming Robinson used his position to isolate and exploit them. More Trending The lawsuit also accuses Frances Robinson of verbal abuse and the use of 'ethnically pejorative language,' contributing to what the plaintiffs describe as a toxic work environment. A news conference addressing the lawsuit was scheduled for Tuesday in Los Angeles, according to Variety. Smokey Robinson, a central figure in the rise of Motown, is known for hits like Cruisin' and Tracks of My Tears, and has received numerous honors including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Medal of Arts.
