Commuters left in the lurch after KSRTC bus reallocation in Thiruvananthapuram city
Thiruvananthapuram: Residents are facing mounting transport woes after KSRTC redeployed more than half of its city circular electric buses to inter-district routes. While intended to expand sustainable travel options, the move has left urban commuters grappling with unreliable services and increased costs, directly impacting their daily lives and livelihoods. In 2023, under the Smart City initiative, KSRTC launched 113 electric buses for its city circular network in partnership with the corporation. The buses offered a flat fare of Rs 10 per ride or Rs 150 for a 24-hour pass, providing affordable and dependable connectivity across neighborhoods. Unlike KSRTC's regular distance-based fare system, these buses ensured budget-friendly travel regardless of distance. However, with over 50% of the fleet now diverted to routes connecting Thiruvananthapuram with Neyyattinkara, Vellarada and Kollam, the remaining city services struggle to meet demand. Former transport minister Antony Raju, who introduced 163 electric buses during his tenure, criticized the diversion. "These buses were meant exclusively for the city and were an instant hit, especially for residents in interior areas who could rely on services every 10 minutes. Diverting them to other districts is unfair and needs immediate rectification," he told TOI. The repercussions are stark for daily commuters. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Knee pain prices might surprise you Knee pain | search ads Find Now Undo Rekha Nair, a schoolteacher from Sasthamangalam, said, "The 6C brown bus was my only reliable option. Now, with erratic timings and overcrowding, I'm late almost every day." Delivery agent Mukesh echoed her frustration: "When buses don't arrive, we're forced to take autos, which are expensive and unreliable." Jagathy resident Hari Shankar, who relied on the electric buses to reach his office in Kowdiar, added, "They were affordable and punctual. Now, I don't know how to manage." KSRTC defended the reallocation, citing growing demand for sustainable inter-district travel. A senior official acknowledged the backlash but stressed strategic priorities. "We recognise commuters' concerns. The shift aims to boost green transit options statewide. Still, we will review service gaps and adjust allocations as needed," the official said. The city's circular bus service features a seven-colour scheme with each colour corresponding to a specific route. These buses operate every 10 minutes during peak hours and 30 minutes otherwise, ensuring seamless connectivity since their rollout. As of 2025, the network has 13 routes, 1,000 stops, 24 interchange points, with a fleet of over 130 buses, including electric buses. But with some electric buses diverted to inter-district services, these well-planned colour routes are now disrupted, causing service gaps and commuter frustration. BMTC launches new metro feeder routes for Bengaluru's Yellow Line
The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has introduced new metro feeder services to enhance last-mile connectivity for passengers using the recently opened Yellow Line. The new services, operational from Tuesday, will connect six metro stations — Hosur Road, Beratena Agrahara, Electronics City, Infosys Foundation Konappana Agrahara, Hebbagodi, and Bommasandra — through four routes, operated by 12 buses making 96 trips daily. With Namma Metro's #YellowLine now operational, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy @RLR_BTM today launched extended metro feeder bus services to stations along the new corridor to boost first- and last-mile connectivity.@the_hindu@ — Darshan Devaiah B P (@DarshanDevaiahB) August 12, 2025 According to a release, the feeder routes include MF-22, MF-22A, MF-22B, and MF-22C, covering key areas such as Electronics City Wipro Gate, Kodathi Wipro, Bommasandra, and Konappana Agrahara. These services are expected to significantly benefit commuters travelling in and around the Electronics City corridor, one of Bengaluru's busiest tech hubs. 'BMTC, which operates an average of 44 lakh passenger trips daily through 6,217 buses, has been expanding its metro feeder network since October 2023. Services were first launched at K.R. Puram railway station and BTM Layout bus stand, and have since grown to 45 routes and 214 schedules, carrying over 1.2 lakh passengers daily,' Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said after the launch of the feeder services. In Electronics City area alone, BMTC runs 3,000 trips on 100 routes, catering to 14,000 passengers per day. 'The corporation has also introduced QR code-based information systems at metro bus stops and inside trains, enabling commuters to access feeder bus schedules, live tracking, and other travel details on their phones,' Mr. Reddy added. Commuters have also welcomed the new feeder services. Mukund K. from the Save Sarjapura Association said: 'The recent addition of MF-22 and MF-22A routes is a huge boost to connectivity between the Hosur Road (Yellow) metro line and sections of Sarjapur Road. While this is a good start, the number of buses must be gradually increased to improve adoption.' 'We have also conveyed to the Transport Minister that the Dommasandra area of Sarjapur is experiencing extremely high growth due to the presence of the largest school district, along with its connectivity to Whitefield via SH-35 and to Electronics City via SH-168. BMTC should create a metro feeder route connecting Bommasandra metro to Dommasandra,' Mr. Mukund added.

Land identified for depot of KSRTC e-buses at Balepuni
Mangaluru: KSRTC officials said that the corporation identified land at Balepuni, near Mudipu, to set up a depot for 100 electric buses sanctioned to Mangaluru under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme. At the Transport Adalat held at the RTO office on Monday, an official from the KSRTC Mangaluru division mentioned that a final decision has not yet been taken. The KSRTC Mangaluru division has three depots in Mangaluru city, with a depot at Kuntikana housing 135 buses. The existing facilities will not be sufficient to accommodate an additional 100 electric buses, which will arrive soon. Land has been identified for a dedicated e-bus depot, and a proposal in this regard has been sent to the govt for approval. The work will begin once the process is completed, the official said. Participants at the Adalat raised several grievances about public transportation. Mohammed Ismail, vice-president of Dakshina Kannada District Muslim League, said that passengers of city buses from Deralakatte are made to get down at Pumpwell Junction despite availing tickets to the State Bank bus stand. Conductors force commuters to travel in another bus and cut short the trip. This causes a lot of inconvenience for commuters, especially senior citizens, he said. In response to a complaint raised by activist Hanumanth Kamath on the lack of bus connectivity to the Praja Soudha, new DC Office in Padil, RTO Shridhar K Mallad said that an appropriate decision will be taken at the RTA meeting to be held on Aug 18. There are plans to extend bus services to Padil from various destinations. New permits will also be issued to KSRTC and private bus operators to introduce buses to Padil from various destinations, he said. Issue tickets or face music, says RTO. The RTO directed private bus conductors to issue tickets to all passengers. After the issue was brought to notice at the meeting, the RTO said that he had already started a drive-by travelling in private buses and imposing penalties. "At least twice a week, I travel in a private bus to check whether conductors issue tickets to passengers. Penalties have been imposed on many conductors who failed to issue tickets," he said, adding that the drive will continue. Dakshina Kannada Taximen and Maxicab Association president Dinesh Kumpala M said that though six bus permits were issued on the Mangaluru - Kumpala route, only two buses are operating on the route. Meanwhile, one KSRTC bus on the route is also not operating regularly, he said. When participants at the meeting also raised similar complaints, the RTO said that the permits will be cancelled if private bus operators fail to operate buses on prescribed routes.
