Bengal: 4 held after 8 cops injured, bike torched in Kolkata suburb shop clash

Kolkata: Four men were arrested after eight police personnel, including a woman constable, were injured in a clash between two groups over the opening of a shop in a Kolkata suburb on Wednesday, police said. Stones were pelted, police vehicles were damaged, and a two-wheeler was torched in the middle of the road, officers aware of the development said. The police had to resort to a lathi charge and fire tear gas shells to disperse the mob, following which prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) were imposed. 'Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS have been issued. A few police personnel, including an IPS officer, sustained injuries after a mob pelted stones and bricks. Police had to resort to lathi charge and fire tear gas shells to disperse the mob,' a senior officer said. The clash took place close to the Rabindra Nagar police station. The police said that when a team of officers went to the spot to tackle the situation, they were attacked by a mob. 'They came in hundreds and were indiscriminately pelting stones and glass bottles. We were few in number. Many police personnel were injured. A brick hit my head,' a lady police constable said. A large police contingent and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed to bring the situation under control. 'The situation is now under control. Raids are going on to arrest those who attacked police personnel,' an officer said. Delhi Confidential: Matching Barricades

After the new Parliament building was inaugurated in 2023, the Parliament House complex has seen a range of new features — from landscaping to relocation of statues to new uniforms for staff. Soon, visitors to the complex would get to see 'aesthetically pleasing' barricades in place of the usual ones placed by the security. The CPWD has designed the barricades to match the look of the new building, in the same red sandstone colour and cast iron design mimicking the jaalis inside. The triangular Parliament building will be displayed at the centre of it. Now that the government has announced that there is no special session to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Emergency declaration, the BJP is considering a plan to conduct mock parliament sessions across the country. Party sources said there is a suggestion that mock sessions showing how Parliament passed the 42nd amendment of the Constitution — during the Emergency to centralise power and curtail judiciary — should be conducted in every district. The controversial remarks made during the debate, including the one made by Congress leader C M Stephen daring the courts to defy Parliament (he had said 'I don't know whether they (courts) will have the temerity to defy this Parliament. If they do it, we have our machinery) will be played in the mock parliament sessions.

AAP slams demolition in Bhoomiheen camp, DDA defends action

New Delhi: A demolition drive was held at the Bhoomiheen camp in Kalkaji amid a heavy deployment of cops on Wednesday morning. Calling the demolition a "deliberate assault on the marginalised", AAP alleged that BJP govt defied its own chief minister Rekha Gupta's promise of "not a single jhuggi will be touched". Local MLA Atishi alleged that BJP was betraying the poor. "Just three days ago, CM Rekha Gupta claimed that not a single jhuggi would be demolished and no poor person's home would be touched. Yet, under the cover of heavy police presence, the entire Bhoomiheen camp was razed to the ground, displacing thousands of people and leaving them homeless on the streets," she said. Delhi Development Authority said the demolition was against ineligible dwellers encroaching upon five acres of its land. It stated that under the in situ slum rehabilitation project at Kalkaji, after applying the eligibility criteria as per DUSIB's rehabilitation and relocation policy of 2015, approved by the then Delhi govt, some residents were found to be eligible for rehabilitation and some were not. "As per policy, the households whose names appear in one of the voter lists of the years 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 (prior to 01.01.2015) and possess one of the 12 documents prescribed in the policy, like a passport, electricity bill, driving licence, or passbook issued by a public sector bank or post office, are eligible for alternative accommodation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo Their names should also appear in the voter list of the year of the survey," it added. Households using the jhuggi for commercial purposes, those with residents under 18 years of age, and those living on the upper floor without a separate ration card prior to 01.01.2015 do not qualify for alternative allotment, DDA further explained. A total of 1,862 eligible households of Bhoomiheen camp were rehabilitated to EWS flats in Kalkaji Extension between Nov 2022 and May 2023, said DDA. The project is located on a land of 3 hectares with a total construction cost of Rs 345 crore, excluding land cost. These flats have been given at a highly subsidised price of Rs 1.1 lakh as beneficiary contribution, it added. The ineligible dwellers were given an opportunity to file an appeal before the Appellate Authority, the land-owning agency said. DDA further claimed that most of the houses demolished on Wednesday were lying vacant. "344 jhuggi structures existed which were mostly vacant. There is no stay against demolition of these jhuggi structures," it said in a statement. BJP did not comment on the development.
