The Yankees pulled off a significant trade they believe will fortify their everyday lineup, but they could not get back on the winning track before new third baseman Ryan McMahon arrives.
The sloppy Yanks committed two more errors, including one during the go-ahead rally by the Phillies, and the bullpen coughed up 10 runs over the final three innings in a 12-5 loss Friday night at the Stadium to fall 5 ¹/₂ games behind the Blue Jays in the AL East.

The Yankees led 3-2 entering the seventh following Giancarlo Stanton's solo homer the previous inning, but first baseman Paul Goldschmidt made a high throw home for an error on an infield single by Nick Castellanos to allow the batter to advance into scoring position after the tying run scored on the play.
Luke Weaver replaced lefty Tim Hill and was tagged for a three-run homer to left by J.T. Realmuto for a 6-3 Phillies lead.

The Yankees recouped two runs in the bottom half on a leadoff homer by Anthony Volpe and a sacrifice fly by Aaron Judge for a one-run game.
But Kyle Schwarber crushed his second two-run blast of the night — this one against reliever Ian Hamilton — to boost the cushion back to three. The Phillies then added four more runs against Scott Effross in the ninth to groans and boos from The Bronx crowd.
Yankees starter Will Warren had bounced back from a rough outing last weekend in Atlanta with 5 ²/₃ innings of two-run ball, with seven strikeouts on 89 pitches.

Cody Bellinger and Austin Wells also belted solo home runs, but the Yankees (56-47) fell to 14-22 since June 13.
Bellinger got the Yankees started with a first-pitch blast into the right-field seats off Phillies starter Taijuan Walker with two down in the first. It was Bellinger's sixth home run in his past nine games, beginning with a three-homer performance July 11 against the Cubs.

Wells also took Walker deep for a shot to right on a 1-0 pitch with two outs in the second. It was Wells' 15th dinger of the season, two more than he managed last year during his rookie campaign.

Before the game, Boone said he expects the addition of McMahon in a trade with the MLB-worst Rokies will provide a boost both offensively and defensively.

Boone had stated after a four-error game in Wednesday's loss in Toronto, that the sloppy Yankees needed to 'tighten up' on the defensive side. They began the series tied for the ninth-most errors in MLB with 52 (now 54) — led by Volpe's 13 at shortstop.
'I expect, and it needs to be, one of our strengths,' Boone said. 'Now bringing in a McMahon, and with Anthony, we need them to play, the way they're capable of playing and how we expect them to play.

'And if they do, that becomes a strength, and we need that to happen.'
Warren added to the Yankees' error total with a high throw to Volpe at second on a potential double-play comebacker in the second. But he worked out of the two-runner jam with consecutive strikeouts on four-seam fastballs against Otto Kemp and Bryson Stott.

The Phillies finally got to Warren and evened the score in the fifth on Schwarber's first-pitch, two-run blast to right-center.
Stanton broke the knot against Walker with a rocket over the wall in center on a 2-2 splitter with two outs in the sixth for a 3-2 lead that would not last.

Phillies superstar Bryce Harper ejected for vehemently disagreeing with check-swing call

Philadelphia Phillies superstar Bryce Harper was ejected after vehemently disagreeing with a check-swing call in the third inning of the team's 5-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night at Citizens Bank Park. Harper was up, with runners on second and third base in the bottom of the seventh inning and the game tied 3-3. The count was full, and Harper tried to check his swing as Tigers' relief pitcher Will Vest's breaking ball was in the dirt. Third base umpire Vic Carapazza called Harper out on the check swing, and Harper was irate. He immediately took his helmet off and started waving his arms in disgust. As Harper walked towards Carapazza he appeared to say, "There is no f------ way," and was promptly ejected. Harper said his ejection was "warranted." "I left the batter's box walking toward him, so I think it was warranted," Harper said. "Can't get thrown out in that situation, especially with the ninth inning possibly coming around and my at-bat coming up," he added. Following Harper's ejection in the bottom of the seventh inning, Tigers right fielder Wenceel Perez hit a solo home run to put them up 4-3. However, the Phillies responded in the bottom of the eighth inning with two runs. Left fielder Otto Kemp doubled to score right fielder Nick Castellanos to tie the game at 4-4. Second baseman Bryson Stott singled to score Kemp to give the Phillies a 5-4 lead they would not relinquish. With the Phillies' win, and the New York Mets' loss, the Phillies overtook the Mets for first place in the National League East. The Phillies (62-47) will look to keep their winning ways when they play the Tigers (64-47) in the second game of their three-game series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.

Marlins announcer dunks on sad Yankees fan during shocking comeback

Try it free While the YES Network broadcast was in full misery mode watching the Yankees melt down Friday night, the Marlins' broadcast crew one booth over was taking a victory lap. Tommy Hutton, the analyst on the FanDuel Sports Marlins telecast, perhaps took some exception to the amount of Yankees fans that showed up in South Beach and let it be known after Jose Caballero's error tied the game at 12-12 in the ninth inning. Advertisement 'Give me a couple of more looks like that!' Hutton said, as the broadcast cut to a Yankees fan doing a full surrender cobra. 'Come on, give 'em to me. Thanks for coming, though!' 3 This Yankee fan didn't have a good night at the park. @Masterflip_/X The Marlins won the game, 13-12, shortly thereafter on Agustin Ramirez's swinging bunt, which scored Xavier Edwards from third. Advertisement It was the first time since 1940 that the Yankees scored 12 runs on the road and lost, as they blew leads of 6-0, 9-4 and 12-10, respectively. 3 Marlins announcer Tommy Hutton. @THUT14/X Making it even worse was that four different trade deadline acquisitions played central roles in the disaster. Advertisement Pitchers Jake Bird, David Bednar and Camilo Doval combined to give up nine runs in 2 1/3 innings, while Caballero allowed a base hit in the ninth inning to go under his glove and all the way to the wall, with two runs scoring and Edwards getting to third. 3 Javier Sanoja celebrates as he scores the tying run Friday. AP For the Marlins, who have had a solid couple months since starting the season poorly, it's a signature moment in a year that will almost assuredly end after 162 games. Advertisement They enter Saturday's game seven games behind the Padres for the third and final wild card spot. So, no surprise that the broadcast team was particularly excited.
