An Indian cricketer told me to retire: Karun Nair reveals ahead of Test comeback

India Today10 hours ago

Veteran India batter Karun Nair has revealed that a prominent Indian cricketer once advised him to retire and focus on the financial security offered by franchise T20 leagues. Despite the discouraging advice, Nair remained committed to the revival of his career. His persistence in domestic cricket has now paid off, earning him a place in India's 18-man squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, starting 20 June at Headingley, Leeds.advertisement"I still remember a prominent Indian cricketer calling me and saying you need to retire because the money in these leagues would make me secure," Nair said in an interview with the Daily Mail. "It would have been easy to do, but I knew that regardless of the money, I would be kicking myself for giving up that easily," the 33-year-old added, recalling the moment from two years ago."I was never going to give up on playing for India again. That was just over two years ago and look where we are now," he insists. "It's crazy but deep down, I knew I was good enough."
Nair's path back to the national side has been paved with prolific performances across formats. Last month, he began his tour of England with a double century for India A in an unofficial Test against the England Lions in Canterbury - a clear statement of intent and form.advertisementGautam Gambhir, India's new head coach, has been vocal in his support of Nair's comeback. Speaking to BCCI.tv, Gambhir said: "No matter how many runs you have scored - what matters most is that never-say-die attitude, that never-give-up mindset. That's what has brought you back into the team. It's something that inspires the whole world."Gambhir has also hinted that Nair will be given a fair run in the Test side during the England tour, citing his valuable experience in English conditions. Nair represented Northamptonshire in the 2023 and 2024 County Championship seasons, scoring 736 runs in 10 matches at an average of 52.57, including a memorable double hundred. His domestic season back home was equally exceptional. Playing for Vidarbha in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, Nair finished as the fourth-highest run-scorer, tallying 863 runs from 16 innings at an average of 53.93, with four centuries and two fifties.Earlier in the season, he was instrumental in steering his team to the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Nair dominated the tournament's batting charts, scoring 779 runs from just eight innings at an eye-popping average of 389.50 and a strike rate of 124.04, including five centuries and a fifty. In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, he maintained his rich vein of form, leading his side's scoring with 255 runs from six innings at an average of 42.50 and a blistering strike rate of 177.08. In the 'For The Love Of Cricket' podcast, the former England Test pacer took a dive into Gill's India captaincy and the challenge for him to do well in his first series in his new role. "I think, pretty calm and measured when he speaks. But interesting, I think, on the field, he's got a sort of fire, a bit of intensity. I think he'll be a mix sort of, of (Virat) Kohli and Rohit (Sharma)', said Jos Buttler. "In Kohli, he's sort of really aggressive, sort of transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit, a bit more on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected, but with that fire. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play Chess on Your PC, Free Play Classic Chess Install Now Undo My time knowing Shubman so far, he'll be a bit in the middle." Winning my maiden World Billiards title is a proud feeling: Dhvajj Haria

Dhvajj Haria In a proud moment for Indian cue sports, Ahmedabad's Dhvajj Haria has won the Walter Lindrum Australian Open Billiards Championship 2025 held in Melbourne. An elated Dhvajj tells us, 'I feel proud and overjoyed. This is my first World Billiards (WBL) title and I want to dedicate it to my father (Girish Haria), who has always supported my dreams. This was a level five tournament, and if I have to draw a comparison, it is like winning a Grand Slam in tennis. It has been a while since I have won an international tournament and I will celebrate the moment with my family and friends in Ahmedabad. In Melbourne, it (temperature) was nine degrees but the moment I landed in Ahmedabad, it was 40 degrees!' Dhvajj adds, 'Once I won the semi-final against Robert Hall, the momentum was with me but facing the legendary Peter Gilchrist, a multiple-time world champion, in the final was a daunting task. It was a three-hour long final and once I started well and took a big lead (he sealed a convincing 1035–597 win), there was no looking back. I have got congratulatory messages from Pankaj Advani , Yasin Merchant and other players, which is a great feeling. They saw the live telecast and told me that I played well.' 'Happy to see school students taking up cue sports' Talking about the growing popularity of cue sports in India, Dhvajj shares, 'I am glad to see more youngsters, including school students, taking up cue sports. When I started playing, there were just two categories-under-21 and seniors. Now, there are under-16 and under-18 categories too and there is government support. At the recent National Championships held in Indore, there were more than 1200 entries, which is an encouraging sign. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Our one of a kind Patented Cold Water Extraction Process Superior Ginseng Undo Some schools have introduced cue sports as a part of the curriculum, which is a fantastic initiative.' 'Meditation and regular morning walks help me stay focused' Talking about what helps him in concentrating better, Dhvajj shares, 'Meditation and regular morning walks help me stay focused. As a sportsperson, it's important to be disciplined and these activities are very helpful for achieving that. I am not very active on social media and it is a conscious choice. I am pretty old school that way. Constantly checking Instagram takes up a lot of time.' He adds, 'Also, physical fitness is crucial in cue sports because playing three-hour long matches can cause a lot of strain on your neck, shoulder and back. I do a lot of physio exercises to stay in good shape. While everyone appreciates when the results go your way, not many are aware of the constant hard work that an athlete puts in for years to achieve that result. All of us admire Virat Kohli's sixes and PV Sindhu's smashes, but they have followed a rigorous routine since childhood to reach that level. '
