Mangaluru Dragons overcome top of the table clash with 16-run win over Hubli Tigers
Mysuru (Karnaka) [India], August 16 (ANI): Mangaluru Dragons secured a 16-run win over Hubli Tigers as they played out a nail-biter at the Shriram Capital Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 at the Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar Stadium. Macneil Hadley Noronha and Aneesh K V helped the Dragons notch up a formidable score of 195 in the top-of-the-table clash. Followed by a brilliant four-wicket haul from Kranthi Kumar to secure the victory over the Tigers. The Dragons struck early in the first innings when Lochan S Gowda (5) was run out by Taha in the first over. In the third, Sharath Belur Ravi fell for 2, to Achar. However, opener Macneil Hadley Noronha (56) steadied the innings with a fluent knock studded with four boundaries and two sixes, forging a 107-run stand in just 77 balls with Aneesh KV (62). Trying to accelerate in the 15th over, Aneesh perished on the first ball of Nithin Shanthaveri's spell. Aadarsh Prajwal S (19) came in swinging, but Noronha's dismissal soon after, caught by M D Taha, stalled the Dragons' charge. Nithin then removed Aadarsh to leave them wobbling at 147/5 in the 17th over. Shivaraj S (16) and Kranthi Kumar (30) wrestled back momentum by smashing Nithin for 21 runs in the next over. Manvanth Kumar L responded with a tight 7-run over, but the Dragons' lower order roared back, with Shivaraj and Kranthi adding 48 off just 17 balls to push the total to a commanding 195. Hubli's chase began in dramatic fashion as in-form M D Taha (0), fresh off back-to-back centuries, fell for a duck in the first over, caught off Shreyas Gopal. Impact player Prakhar Chaturvedi provided the impetus, but departed for 37 in the sixth over with the Tigers at 72/2. KV Aneesh dropped Devdutt Paddikal at 44, a reprieve the Tigers hoped to capitalise on. However, Karthikeya K P (4) was caught at the boundary soon after. Devdutt brought up a brisk half-century in just 30 balls, but was dismissed for 60, with Rakshith S (24) following quickly. With four overs left, the Tigers needed 41 runs, but Kranthi Kumar, fresh from a five-wicket haul in the previous match, swung the game. He removed Manvanth (16) first, then delivered a decisive penultimate over, while Abhinav Manohar was caught by Noronha for 28, off Shreevatsha Acharya (Impact player). Kranthi Kumar returned to the fray soon after, dismissing Ritesh Bhatkal (3) and Nischith Pai (1) in quick succession. His spell left Hubli stranded at 179/9 after 20 overs. Kranthi finished with a match-winning burst in the death overs, sealing the Dragons' triumph and capping off an all-round team performance. Brief Scores: Mangaluru Dragons 195/5 in 20 overs (Aneesh KV 62, Macneil Noronha 56; Nithin Shanthaveri 2/54) vs Hubli Tigers 179/9 in 20 overs (Prakhar Chaturvedi 37, Devdutt Padikkal 60; Shreyas Gopal 2/33). Ten Hag makes successful debut after Bayer Leverkusen wins 4-0 in German Cup
BERLIN (AP) — Erik ten Hag made a winning start as Bayer Leverkusen coach with a 4-0 result at fourth-tier team Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the German Cup on Friday. HT Image Patrik Schick, Brazilian wing back Arthur, debutant Christian Kofane and Álex Grimaldo all scored, but they assumed control only after Großaspach captain Volkan Celikwas was sent off in the 66th with two bookings in as many minutes. Leverkusen was forced to defend for long periods after Schick's 32nd-minute opener. The Czech forward also needed to clear the ball off the line. Arthur scored the second shortly after Celikwas' sending off and the other goals followed Mert Tasdelen's late sending off for a bad challenge on Leverkusen defender Axel Tape. Ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, took over from the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso and has had little time to work with a squad undergoing huge changes. Key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Xhaka have left while Kofane, Tape, Ibrahim Maza, Jarell Quansah and goalkeeper Mark Flekken all made their debuts on Friday. The game was interrupted in the first half by a summer storm featuring hailstones. Referee Michael Bacher led the teams off the field. It resumed after a 40-minute break. Also, Union Berlin routed Gütersloh, another fourth-tier side, 5-0 away, and second-division Magdeburg enjoyed a 3-1 win at third-division Saarbrücken. Union used dead-ball situations to take a 3-0 halftime lead, with Robert Skov firing in a free kick, and Leopold Querfeld and Danilho Doekhi scoring after corners. Union goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow had to go off early in the second half after indicating he was feeling dizzy. Matheo Raab went on for his Union debut but had little to do as Andrej Ilić scored and then set up Jeong Woo-yeong to complete the rout. ___ AP soccer:

Shubhankar Sharma needs strong second round to make cut
Copenhagen [Denmark], August 16 (ANI): Shubhankar Sharma opened his campaign at the Danish Golf Championship with an even-par 71 at the Par-71 Furesø Golf Klub, leaving him tied for 70th and in need of a strong second round to make the cut. The Indian golfer, who has not made a cut since the Indian Open in March, will be eager to turn his fortunes around and extend his week in Denmark. Veer Ahlawat carded a 2-over 73, placing him tied for 113th and facing an uphill task to progress, as per a press release from the Danish Golf Championship. Sharma began well with a birdie on the sixth but faltered with three straight bogeys from the eighth to the tenth. He recovered with birdies on the 12th, 16th, and 18th, offsetting a bogey on the 14th to finish level par. At the top of the leaderboard, England's Marco Penge produced a flawless bogey-free round of 7-under 64, setting a new course record and taking a two-shot lead. His round featured birdies on the third, sixth, 11th, 13th, and 14th holes, capped by an eagle on the 18th. Penge, who has recorded six top-30 finishes in seven starts this season, currently sits fifth in the Race to Dubai standings. Five players share second place, two shots back, including 2018 Open Champion Francesco Molinari, former Danish Golf Championship winner Rasmus Højgaard, Canadian Aaron Cockerill, Germany's Jeremy Paul, and Scotland's Marc Warren. Rasmus carded eight birdies in his 5-under 66. Last year's runner-up, Lucas Bjerregaard, is tied for seventh with six others. Nicolai Højgaard had a memorable day, holing out for eagle twice in the space of three holes. After being two over through 10 holes, he eagled the par-4 12th from 111 yards and repeated the feat at the 14th from 144 yards, later adding a birdie on the last for a 3-under 68 and a share of 14th place.
