Indonesian man claims trial to rape of teen in Tuaran

Published on: Mon, Jun 23, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: A 42-year-old Indonesian man has claimed trial to a charge of raping a 14-year-old girl in Tuaran. Ari Ambo Tang pleaded not guilty before Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan to allegedly committing the offence in a worker's quarters at Kampung Giling between 5pm and 8pm in mid-March this year. He was charged under Section 376(2)(d) of the Penal Code, which carries up to 30 years' jail and whipping upon conviction for raping a girl under 16, with or without her consent. The court fixed July 22 for pre-trial case management and released Ari on RM6,000 bail with two local sureties, ordering him to report to Tuaran police station twice a month and prohibiting contact with prosecution witnesses. Johor cops bust RM7.1 million drug syndicate in two major raids
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor Police have successfully busted a drug trafficking syndicate believed to have been active since the beginning of this year through two separate raids in residential areas around Johor Bahru, with the value of the seizure estimated to exceed RM7.1 million. Johor police chief CP Datuk M Kumar said the special operation was carried out by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) of the Johor police contingent headquarters with Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, at about 7.30 pm, between June 14 and 15. He said that in the first raid at a two-storey terrace house in Taman Mutiara Rini, police arrested a 45-year-old local man believed to be the mastermind along with a 34-year-old Vietnamese woman. 'As a result of the inspection, police seized 2.67 kilogrammes of powder believed to be ecstasy and 368 grammes of drugs suspected to be marijuana,' he said in a press conference today. Following the arrest, police launched a second raid on another terrace house about a kilometre from the first location, which had also been rented by the same male suspect since May 2024 and arrested a 23-year-old Vietnamese woman. 'In this second raid, police seized 38 kg of ecstasy powder and 1.37 kg of ketamine,' he said. In both raids, police also seized two cars worth RM190,000, cash RM49,150 and various jewellery worth RM17,630, with the total seizure amounting to RM265,615. He said the two foreign women were believed to have entered the country legally, but further investigations were being conducted into their travel documents. The syndicate is believed to operate in an organised manner, including using social media and delivery via 'runners' and police believe there are still members at large out there and investigations are underway to track them down. He said that apart from being used as a residence, the first house is believed to be used as a place to store drugs, while the second house is a location to package the drug powder into small packets which are believed to be sold in the local market for RM250 to RM350. Kumar said urine tests showed that the man involved tested positive for methamphetamine while the two foreign women tested positive for ketamine and benzodiazepines. All of them have been remanded until June 26 for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

Three men held over parang attack in Nilai, alcohol use suspected
NILAI: Police have arrested three men in connection with a parang attack that left a man seriously injured in Bandar Baru Nilai yesterday. The 2.30am incident is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding, with all involved reportedly under the influence of alcohol. Nilai police chief Superintendent Abdul Malik Hasim said police received a report on the incident at 6.08am. "The complaint was lodged by a medical officer from Sultan Idris Shah Hospital in Serdang, Selangor, who received a local male patient in his 30s with his face and body covered in blood. "The victim was admitted to the red zone of the Emergency Department for treatment," he said today. Investigations by the Nilai Criminal Investigation Division found that the victim was involved in a fight outside a fast food restaurant in Bandar Baru Nilai. "The victim is believed to have been attacked with a parang and a wooden stick by several unidentified individuals. "He is in stable condition with injuries to the head and legs." Preliminary investigations ruled out gang-related activity, personal revenge or any longstanding conflict as the cause. "The incident is believed to have been triggered by a spontaneous argument under the influence of alcohol, which escalated due to provocation and physical confrontation," Abdul Malik said. Police arrested two men aged 29 and 37 in Nilai in connection with the case and submitted a remand application this morning. "The case is being investigated under Sections 148, 326 and 427 of the Penal Code to determine the motive and location of the incident. "Anyone with information is urged to contact the nearest police station or the Nilai police operations room at 06-790 4222. "Police advise the public not to speculate and assure that appropriate measures are being taken to maintain public safety," Abdul Malik said.

'Adopted brother' cons woman out of RM1.68mil in scam
BUKIT MERTAJAM: A 57-year-old woman lost more than RM1.68 million in an online investment scam involving a bogus platform. The victim, a retiree from a private firm in Penang, was first contacted via WhatsApp in late March by a man claiming to be from Hong Kong. After three weeks of communication, she began referring to the suspect as her "adopted brother". Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the suspect later persuaded the victim to invest in an online scheme via a mobile app. "The victim was promised returns of up to 10 per cent within a short period," he said in a statement today. Hamzah said the woman made her first investment of USD2,000 (RM8,716) on March 18 and received a return of RM10,023, which convinced her of the platform's legitimacy. "Believing the scheme to be genuine and profitable, she went on to make 36 transactions between March 14 and June 14, depositing funds into 20 different bank accounts belonging to various companies. "In total, she lost RM1,680,464," he said. The scam came to light when the victim attempted to withdraw her returns but was unsuccessful. She was then asked to make additional payments to release the funds, prompting her to suspect foul play. The woman subsequently lodged a report with the Commercial Crime Investigation Department at the Seberang Prai Tengah district police headquarters yesterday. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. This incident follows a similar case reported yesterday in which two men, including a senior citizen, lost a combined total of RM2.35 million in separate online investment scams.
