The New York Mets seem to be the front-runners for Luis Robert Jr. if the Chicago White Sox decide to move him.
Robert is coming to the end of his six-year, $50 million extension in Chicago, the last two years of which have been a major disappointment. But he's heated up in July, and the former All-Star could provide a spark for a team that hasn't gotten much from its center fielders.
According to MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand, the Mets have been described as one of the "most aggressive" teams in pursuit of Robert, who also has club options for the next two seasons at $20 million each.

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JUNE 21: Luisangel Acuña #2 of the New York Mets attempts to turn a double play against Kyle Schwarber #12 of the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on June 21, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Mets defeated the Phillies 11-4. MorePreviously, Mark Vientos was a name at the forefront of Robert rumors, as Bob Nightengale of USA Today had said Chicago was asking for the 25-year-old third baseman. However, another young Mets infielder might be at risk as well.
Feinsand reported Wednesday that Luisangel Acuña, the National League Rookie of the Month in April, was a name the two teams had discussed in Robert negotiations.
"The White Sox are looking for a solid return for Robert, who remains an above-average defender in center field," wrote Feinsand. "Infielder Luisangel Acuña is one name being discussed in talks between Chicago and New York, a source said."
Acuña, 23, has only 17 appearances since he was called back up from Triple-A on July 10. He's a useful pinch-runner, but the Mets don't seem to trust his bat enough to make an impact on their playoff run.
Does that mean that Acuña, the younger brother of Atlanta Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr., will be on the move for the second time in three years at the deadline?
We'll know the answer by Thursday night.

NBA All-Star Damian Lillard hired as GM at alma mater Weber State

Nine-time NBA All-Star Damian Lillard, who returned to the Portland Trail Blazers last month, announced on Saturday night a second, official position as general manager of the men's basketball program at his alma mater Weber State. Lillard, 35, made the announcement in Ogden, Utah, where he is hosting the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic. "It's something that, my relationship with coach (Eric) Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program means a lot to me," Lillard said those in attendance at Swenson Gym, according to the Standard-Examiner in Ogden. "I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that's something that I'm passionate about." The guard is expected to miss the 2025-26 NBA season as he recovers from a torn left Achilles tendon while playing for the Milwaukee Bucks on April 27 that knocked him out of the rest of the playoffs. The Bucks waived him after the season and he re-signed with the Trail Blazers for a reported three-year, $42 million contract. Weber State issued a news release on Saturday which said Lillard will work closely with the coaching staff and athletic department leadership "to provide insight, mentorship, and guidance, using his experience at the collegiate and professional levels to elevate the program." Portland selected Lillard with the sixth overall pick of the 2012 NBA Draft. The point guard averaged 24.5 points and shot 40.9 percent on 3-point attempts in 32 games (all starts) as a senior in the 2011-12 season, when he was a third-team All-American. Lillard averaged 18.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.2 steals while shooting 39 percent from long range in 104 games (98 starts) during a highly decorated four-year college career. He was the Big Sky Player of the Year twice. Lillard returned to Ogden and graduated in 2015. WSU retired his No. 1 jersey in 2017, and he was inducted into its athletics hall of fame in 2021 and the Big Sky Conference Hall of Fame in 2022. "Once again, Damian Lillard exemplifies loyalty and commitment to his alma mater," WSU President Brad Mortensen said in the release. "We are so grateful for his continued leadership and example he sets for Wildcats past, present, and future." The nine-time All-Star and 2012-13 NBA Rookie of the Year has been selected All-NBA seven times. Lillard owns career averages of 25.1 points, 6.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds in 900 regular-season contests with Portland (2012-23) and Milwaukee (2023-25). His 2,804 3-pointers rank fourth in NBA history and his 22,598 points rank eighth among active players. "Success doesn't come overnight, especially in today's ever-changing basketball landscape," Lillard said in the university's news release. "College athletics is constantly evolving, and building a strong program requires time, trust, and commitment. "I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State," Lillard continued. "The support of our community is vital to the program's success, and I am committed to playing a greater role in that effort. This opportunity allows me to be even more involved in shaping the future of Weber State basketball." --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

Early look at Yankees' 10 potential free agents with predictions

NEW YORK — The Yankees tried hard to keep their superstar 1A last winter when Juan Soto hit the free agent market after one great season hitting behind Aaron Judge. When $760 million over 16 seasons wasn't enough to keep Soto from heading to Queens to play for the Mets for 15 years and $765 million plus perks, the Yankees pivoted to spending big on a top-of-the-rotation starting pitcher and two former MVPs for the lineup, left-hander Max Fried and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt as free agents and Cody Bellinger in a trade to replace Soto's left-handed power while bringing excellent defense at all three outfield spots plus first base. The Yankees will have more tough money calls to make this coming offseason with 10 players on their roster who can become free agents. Will they keep Bellinger if he does what everyone suspects and passes on vesting his $25 million player option for 2026? Will they try to bring back center fielder Trent Grisham, who has followed a poor first season with the Yankees with a fabulous second one that's included a career-best 21 homers and what figures to be a third Gold Glove? What about Luke Weaver? They've had him eating up a lot of bullpen innings cheap the last two seasons. He's going to get paid by someone. Will the Yankees move on from Goldschmidt and hand first base to Ben Rice, who suddenly is catching more than Austin Wells? One decision that surely will be a formality: Two-time All-Star reliever Devin Williams will be a one-and-done Yankee after following nothing but great seasons in Milwaukee with a dud for the ages in pinstripes. Oklahoma Sooners defensive end named to Lombardi Award watch list

Oklahoma Sooners star defensive end R Mason Thomas was named to the Bednarik Award watch list on Monday, placing him among some of the best defensive players in all of college football. On Tuesday, he went two-for-two this week on watch list appearances. Thomas made the cut for the Lombardi Award watch list. This accolade "continues to honor the Outstanding College Football Lineman, whether on offense or defense, who displays exceptional performance and ability and embodies the character and discipline that Vince Lombardi championed throughout his life," according to the award's website. Three former Sooners have taken home the Lombardi Award, beginning with Lee Roy Selmon is 1975. Tony Casillas followed in 1985, and Tommie Harris is the most recent recipient, winning in 2003. Thomas enjoyed a breakout season in 2024 and returned for a final year in 2025. He'll look to build off of a season where he had nine sacks and led the Sooners in pressures. He was also named to the 2025 All-SEC preseason second-team back in July.
